Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp. sold 197,000 PlayStation 3 consoles in the U.S. during November, missing its goal for initial shipments by half after parts shortages slowed shipments, market researcher NPD Group Inc. estimated.
Nintendo Co., whose Wii console also had its U.S. debut in November, sold 476,000 units, according to Port Washington, New York-based NPD. Microsoft Corp., which began selling the Xbox 360 in November 2005, sold 511,000 machines in the U.S. Sony began selling the PlayStation 3 on Nov. 17 in the U.S.
Sony had planned to make 400,000 consoles available and missed that target, providing an opening for Nintendo and Microsoft. The Tokyo-based company last week replaced PlayStation head Ken Kutaragi and is now airlifting machines to the U.S. weekly. Nintendo's Wii is benefiting from positive reviews and the fact that it costs half as much as the cheapest PlayStation 3.
Nintendo, based in Kyoto, Japan, plans to ship 4 million devices worldwide by the end of the year. Sony is aiming to ship 2 million units this year. Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft, with its year headstart, said earlier this week it may exceed its forecast to sell more than 10 million Xbox 360 machines by the end of the year.
