My wife's Dell Inspiron 1300 does not have a TV out connector, but we'd like to connect it to the TV if possible. We've purchased a game for our daughters that needs to be played through a TV ideally. The laptop has a standard VGA connector.
I've seen a VGA to S-Video adapter for relatively little money. Should this work? Has anyone else managed too get this working, or does the laptop specifically need to support TV output?

Um, what sort of converter did you get? In what way doesn't it work?
I recorded from my PC to VHS a couple of years ago when I didn't have TV-out and it worked fine using a VGA to composite adapter (not a simple cable though - you said the 'lead' arrived today?). I see no reason why the same shouldn't work for S-Video if you have the right tool for the job.

you did make sure that you set the res to 640x480, right?
The Inspiron 1300 will only go down to 800x600 (Intel 915GM). I'm assuming that's the problem...
somewhere in display settings, under monitor I think, you can uncheck a box that says "hide display settings..." or "only show settings my monitor can handle" or something like that. Check or uncheck it so that it shows all resolutions. I have yet to find anything other than allegations that a computer can't do 640x480... Installation of windows is done in 640x480 so I won't believe it til I actually have one in front of me that won't do that res. :)
