Yeesh, isn't this low? Kid gets busted over a GBA

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Yeesh, isn't this low? Kid gets busted over a GBA

Take a look at this article and see if you think that this is just plain dumb... I mean, the GBA's almost an obsolete handheld by now, I mean, a DS Lite or a PSP would be more like it, but a GBA? Whew... The GBA's about half the price of a DS Lite, why arrest him for something so cheap?

Well, sonny, no GBA Devkit for you, guess we won't see you develop any flash cart games of your favorite arcade game, now will we?

I think you're missing the point...

Yeah, me too...Have you read the *whole* story, RAM?

Yeah, I read the whole story, it's just sick that parents in this country don't have a better conscience than to punish a kid for opening a present before Christmas themselves, rather than to have the cops do it.

Aye, The fact it was a GBA is irrelevant.

OK, the kid is 12... the mother is 27(???)... and the great-grandmother is only 63! Yikes! Is this one of those communities that get married at like, 12, or summat? :/

it's just sick that parents in this country don't have a better conscience than to punish a kid for opening a present before Christmas themselves, rather than to have the cops do it.
Why?

They shoulda put him in the cells for the night. GBA today, somebody's car tomorrow.

She said he has shoplifted, stolen money from her, punched a police officer and is nearing expulsion from school. She told the paper that she hopes this arrest will be a wake-up call for her son, because she worries about getting a call someday telling her he's been killed.
She's obviously at the end of her tether. It could be argued that she's a bad parent for letting things get this far in the first place. Her actions may seem extreme but at least she is trying to take some responsibility for her sons future, which is more than many parents do.

He took it without permission. He wanted it. He just took it

Priceless.

They shoulda put him in the cells for the night. GBA today, somebody's car tomorrow.

Too right.

I agree with Ram, its like when store owners call the police on shoplifters rather than just dealing drumhead justice. If poeple commit a crime then either the victims or the people who catch them should be able to deal out the punishment.
And for the love of ... err someone, what gives ppl the right to ask the state to help them with their children when they think they cannot cope. If they cannot cope they should just ... err shoot them?

Having dealt with the child services of two different US states I can understand the parent's problem. This kid is on a one way path to a life in jail, and without state help he doesn't have a chance. Pysciatric help (which this kid appears to need) is very expensive, and at least here in the US it is near impossible to get if you are poor.

[EDIT] - Geez, I forgot to get to the point. In a perverse twist, getting the help is easier if the kid has a criminal record. (most likely)

There seem to be two parts to this:

1. He opened his christmas present early disobediently. I think this is a family matter and it should be dealt with by the family; it is rediculous to be arrested for simply opening a present early.

2. He shoplifts and punches policeman. This is not a family matter. Shoplifting and assaulting police officers is criminal behaviour and should be punished accordingly. And no matter how old someone is, they need to understand that theivery and assault is criminal and will be punished.

In other words, I don't think he should have been arrested for opening the christmas present early, but I think if he did shoplift and punch policeman, he should have been arrested on these charges.

Warning: sweeping generalization incoming...

Maybe having a child at 15 wasn't the best start in life???

Yeah, his Christmas present may NOT be a GBA, but a sentence to detention hall for as long as it takes to beat some sense into a kid about having an impatient and violent attitude like that.

They shoulda put him in the cells for the night. GBA today, somebody's car tomorrow.
Never borrowed your parents car without permission?

Calling the police for opening a christmas present early is absurd. What kind of signals are you sending to the kid: It's wrong to open your christmas presents early, but okay to shoplift and punch police officers? How about the message that if I threaten youi with punishment, I'm going to punish you anyway, regardless of whether you do what I asked or not (calling the police after the kid had confessed).

Oh and I don't know about South Carolina Police Officers, but in my town, if you punched a police officer (or even shouted something obscene at them), they'd bring the pain down on you.

Never borrowed your parents car without permission?
No.

The paper reported she is a single mother and has been struggling with constant behavior problems from the boy.

Sounds like every single-parent family I know.

Here here, John J. The voice of common sense.

That kid's parents calling the police for a relatively minor matter, stitching their son up and wasting police time in the process... no wonder he has problems.

Sounds like every single-parent family I know.

Not the fact they are single parents realy, more how the child is bought up. A simple fact is that *most* 15 year old girls won't have the maturity it requires and the kid will have to pay for it. I know a single mother who is great and the daughter is the best behaved child i've seen pretty much my whole life.

WOW!! I had something posted here and BOOM gone. How come? I guess I'll keep quiet then. No prob.

The rule is no swearing, if you want to curse do it elsewhere.

I didnt swear per say. I used the --> * thing. I just noticed 30 min ago in another topic about using the Lords name in vein. That can stay?? Come work with cops. We CRY TOO. Its a hard job, and Ill say what ever I want about parents not doing there job. I didnt swear to make you mad. Im saying how tiring it gets to put up with stuff like that. And I used the (*) thing. Give me a break.

(nicely) The mother should get a life, and do her role as a mom. Im tired (as a cop) seeing kids not learning right, because parents cant do their own job. This kid will learn more, when it comes from the parents, not from cops giving him nightmares. Some parents....

Not a lot parents can do these days without being liable to be charged with either mental abuse or physical abuse.

Well, personaly, I dont believe that. Maybe Im just different. Parents have more power than they think.

Freaky, from her sons age and her age, she must have gotten pregnant at the age of 14 - or very early 15. And what the hell is the grandmother still doing there, she should have been shipped off to the resthome at 50!

Maybe having a child at 15 wasn't the best start in life???

Exactly! Perhaps it should be illegal to have children when you're a child yourself.

That'd be about as useful as making suicide illegal. Actually, suicide is illegal, hahah.

Well you cant really send someone who commited suicide to prison can you?

No, but many people can commit suicide in prison.

And you cant send the ones who commited suicide in prison to another prison can you? - lol.

Unruly children are ALWAYS the fault of their parents/guardians.

Unruly children are ALWAYS the fault of their parents/guardians.

Thank you Enay. This kid NEVER would of gotten to this point, if this MOM did her job. She should of waited till she was a grown up herself. The world loves to look for excuses as to why and how. Lets take for example, super nanny or nanny911. How can a stranger go into a house, and fix the unruley? Sounds to me, like this mom needs a mom of her own.

Unruly children are due to a lack of discipline but it's unfair to lay the blame solely at the feet of one group of people. I'd say that parents, society, and the governments of developed western nations are far too tolerent of misbehaviour these days - the rights of the individual are considered to be more important than the rights of the many, and this is a big mistake.

Im not really sure if I understand you correctly JustLuke, so dont get angry:) If I understand you, your saying blame everyone? In some sense, that is true. But if you take the nanny idea, what does the nannies do? They overall give structure. She puts things in order. And, with a smile. You have to remember, kids only know, what they know. As time goes on, they learn more. Now, in this case, this kid didnt have this from the begining. A young mom, no dad(think)mom has no job worth anything, and not enough training being a kid herself. I have had the opertunity, dealing with a mess load of kids in the past. I was part of an after-school program for parents still at work. There was a big age difference. And yes, there was some kids just like the ones we are talking about. While the other adults waved them off, I worked with them directly. And my adward, was changing an unruley kid to a happy one. Ive done it. This one kid, who is very simmilar to this story,(except being arrested) who was always mad. He had 2 parents, but they didnt care less. He was feared by alot of other kids, and some adults. I worked him. And after 2 months, he was starting to be happy, and proud of his achievements. I used alot of different ways to work it, but my #1 way was humor. I made this kid laugh so much, it worked out the negative emotions. In a nutshell, all he needed was to see some possitive. I used, humor, voices(stories) guitar/music and just be human. He is now approx 24 years old now, and he has a stable job doing electrical work. I still see him occasionaly, and he is doing awsome. He still thanks me. As far as he was concerened, the whole world hated him till he met me. Im his personal mentor :) It isnt hard people. You just have to be knowledgeable yourself, then apply it to the kids. There are only a couple of reasons, any kid can be lost. One is medical, two is lack of positive role models. Kids are not as hard as everyone thinks. And you dont need money, or a fancy degree. The mom in this topic, needed to grow up herself. Im sorry, but ive seen it one time to many. History shows for itself. In the end, parents are to blame, sorry.

This kidds screams for help.

he want to play WOW :)
