Ie7 rant (take no notice)

ARGH!!! I have to vent my anger @ MS somewhere... Here will do!

Just installed IE7 it looks good, is nice and fast etc. but soon wish i hadnt, its gone mad, asking EVERY time wether id like to open zips or exes, 'this file puts your computer at risk!!!'

!!And im not talking about just in 'internet mode'!!

i suddenly find myself retorting 'no its your damn badly written os thats putting my DATA at risk'

So, i spend half an hour trying to find t5he stupid setting which should have been worded 'if you know how to use a computer and know exes and zips can harm your computer you may want to switch this off button'

Found it, only to find i now get lots of red popups saying WARNING COMPUTER AT RISK! Your current settings are insecure would you like daddy to fix it for you?.....

NO!

Grr it makes me mad, i use firefox anyway, but now it seems IE7 has taken over even 'my computer' and explorer, red messages everywhere)

To turn it off its security settings>custom> launching applications>enable. Then see how many messages you get, you even get a about:secutity page telling you as if the banner and bubbles arnt enough

It should do extra security checks silently and then really scream if it knows that something is wrong.

It's more secure like that, because people (knowledgeable or not) will just ignore the warnings otherwise. It's a bit like that boy who cried WOLF.

I guess Vista, being a lot better organized than XP, has a better chance of things working like that.

Lol, I installed it and it works great.

IE7 is super fast on my rig. It works great.

Sounds more like a problem caused by frequenting too many 'special interest' sites rather than being a problem with Internet Explorer.

I generally agree that IE should have an idiotproof security system installed, but normal users are even more prone to 'just click that OK button' whenever it pops up, never knowing/care what they do.

We professionals at least KNOW there are alternatives out there.

I generally like the fact it asks all the time, I do understand how it can be considered annoying though.

I uninstalled it since it wouldn't let me remove the M$ search bar, leaving me with both Google Toolbar and theirs. If I remember rightly, I might have got rid of it but then the address bar takes up the full width of the window and can't be resized, ending up taking up extra vertical space, I couldn't have the menu placed at the top without something else looking out of place, and all sorts of annoying little things like that. The GUI sucks. Death to IE 7.

IE7 works good here although I do not use it much!
Opera rules then Firefox come second place :)

As much as I've used Vista and read your story it seems they are very alike about those "Warning - This file came from outside"

I didnt say it doesnt work great, its fast, looks good etc.

BUT ITS AN INTERNET BROWSER! Fine, i dont mind it asking me once 'this file your downloading may be a problem' thats kind of logical.

BUT

Im refering to files on my pc, nothing to do with the internet.. Now, every time i open an exe file or zip file (or even aps that use external exes) i get a message 'INTERNET EXPLORER: do you want to open it'.

Ok fine, i can turn it off but then the red baloons and banners begin. When i see red messages it should be something important ie firewall off etc. not a red message permenantly at the top of my brower space saying:

'Your internet settings are insecure, click here to fix it'

Plus it is really bad for us independents because it makes out programs look dirty to noobs. (eg. i sent a file to my mum with a small blitz app to show her, she didnt open it because windows told her it was a security risk!)

You do know that you can change the default search provider to Google so that you can just use the already-there search box. I've never really liked the Google search bar, only real use was a quick way to search Google, and a popup blocker. Now IE7 has them both.

As for the record I dont get hardly any prompts like you do D-Graphix. I usually get the 'Do you want to run this program' and all I have to do is click yes. I'd rather have it ask me what to run then just go ahead and run 'spamtrojanhackserver.exe'.

to have google as your default, click on the little icon with the down arrow next to the search magifying glass.

Select <more providers> and you can add more to the list of search engines you get when you click on that icon.

You get a choice of a few dozen, and the one thats checked from now on in the drop down list is your default search engine.

I really like IE7, and don't mind the warnings at all.

Lol, how do you do that then without paying microsoft to get on their 'approved vendors' list. :P

No, im using 'my computer' / explorer. Thats what im moaning about, IE7 has affected the way it works since i installed IE7. Its made it more 'secure'



Why do you need a message? simply dont run 'spamtrojanhackserver.exe' in the first place.

unfortunately neither run B3D,Giles,maya,etc... (the only reason i still have windows on 'development' machine, all my others ive switched away from MS and am 100% happy with)

The thing that knarks me about IE7 is that sometimes, when browsing, I use the scrollwheel, next thing I know, it'z zooming in and out, and I don't know what I've pressed to make it do that! :/

Still, I find it much better than IE6

Thats great for browsing files locally, but some websites have the habbit of magically running stuff without your permission. The verify prompt is a way to prevent such things happening.

MSN messenger is the worst program for stupid stuff like that. Sent a song i had recorded and ONCE i'd finished sending, MSN wouldn't let him open it, because it said it was dangerous.

What i blame? Too many idiots who open stuff they don't know what it is.

I remember in an older release of Windows Messenger I had the problem. But since using Windows Live Messenger and IE7 everything works fine.

It might be a security setting somewhere, In fact, I bet it is.

Cuz it's so hard clicking a single button to get rid of that dialog every time, isn't it?


Vista is worse again. Security Center has been upgraded with a few extra things that it can complain about if you switch them off (or not completely 100% automated the way MS wants it).


Odd tactic. I just configured the search bar to use Google (actually the FIRST thing I did when I first booted up IE7 beta all that time ago) and uninstalled the Google Toolbar. The only thing I miss is the ability to translate any page from the pop up menu.

That is not normal behaviour - I've never encountered that once (either in Vista or in XPSP2).


Last I checked, warning dialogs will pop up in IE7 for MS programs - ie there is no 'right' or 'wrong' exes...


The Ctrl button, just like every other IE (although zoom has taken over the font size function).


In MSN 8, that is an option in preferences that is disabled by default. If he turned it on, it's his own fault. Though I learnt in MSN 7 days not to click on a file link from within MSN.

I am sticking with Opera, its still got more features than IE and Firefox

That there is my beef, i dont mind it asking me when the file is remote or if ie is trying to run something automatically.

What i object to it asking for confirmation every time i try and open or run stuff on my pc using 'my computer' It even asks for confirmation when you right click!!!!!!!

Actually, yes it is, if you are moving/copying or processing masses of indifidual zips files at high speed and automatically know beforehand where the right click menus appear before they appear, so you can move the mouse into position to say... send2archive or properties or "open with" as some programs can use zips like a folder.

Anyway, surely its not the zip file thats dangerous anyway, its whats in the zipfile or the zip program used to read the archive. Windows should be able to know the difference.

The biggest reason why I avoid using IE is because of its user tracking/spying activities ..

Yep, i didnt like the sound of the phishing filter! basically sounds like it sends every ip and address you visit off to MS or FBI or someone for investigation to see if its 'fake'

Not that i visit illegal sites but i still dont like the idea, it feels the same as having a camera in your toilet bowl! (they dont know whoose arse it is (or do they) but they know its buisiness :) ...

It actually sends off the html content, not the addresses. I've had Phishing Filter pop up viewing a cache'd Google link a few times.
