Dragon's Lair
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Dragon's Lair
Great game, I liked Space Ace a teeny bit more though with its multiple paths throughout a level idea.
yeah I was pretty into space ace too, almost bought the arcade machine with 3 games for 300 about 15 years ago.
I've got Dragons Lair on the PC - it was re-released a couple of years ago on CD - seems identical to the original.
I've got all 3 on DVD (Dragon's lair 1 and 2, and Space Ace)
I can play them either on my PS2, or even on my DVD player with the remote.
Mmm, actually, I think I got all 3 as a boxed version - I'm currently hunting for it. Now that "Pongo" mentions it, I'm pretty sure it was all 3 games in the box
Was this actually a game?
I allso got em on DVD, but they are not easy to play.
I found my disk. It is the 'Dragon's Lair Deluxe Pack'. Double CD.
Hey, all of the stuff is AVI files - oooh, we could make a Blitz3D version of it - all of the video footage is there for the taking.
Yeh, 'Dragon's Lair' is kind of bent to play.
I once bought the Amiga version.
Is this DVD version some of you are talking about playable?
And if so how?
Also on a Mac?
How is the image quality in comparison to the lascerdisc version?
Yeah, the DVD version is playable - you use the menu navigation control buttons on your handset.
I've always loved Space Ace and the two Dragon's Lair games.
Ahh okay...
Does there exist a version which works in the eu?
I had a quick look at amazon and saw that the versions they offered only worked with usa/canada region codes.
DIRK IN HD!!! Just found this link, they retransferred the original game footage into HD. Now there is an HD DRAGON'S LAIR game for the PC. I'll be buying this!
http://www.digitalleisure.com/contents/DVDRom_games.htm#dlHDI'm proud to say that I own an original animation cell from Space Ace (he's holding his breath riding the underwater jet). I'll never forget, years before that the woman had a Full size cell of Singe! It was being sold for $100. Of course, this was well over 20 years ago which means I was a pennyless kid that would have been about $93 short. Can't imagine what that would be worth now!
Nice link!
I do own the "Tender Loving Care" game which get's quite sexy at a certain point! :O)
Was this actually a game?
It was more like an animated film that was interactive by means of hitting up/down/left/right/attack-button at the appropriate (marked) areas of the animation.
Was quite the cool thing back in the time where graphics were normally 16-bit video games.
And the game was hilarious at best thanks to the excellent animation/techniques used.
(for its time anyway)
How's Space Ace btw? Never heard of it before, but interested if it's anything like Dragon's Lair gameplay/setup.
in space ace characters actually talk and there's quite a lot of dialogue. Your Ace who looks like a gangly kid in a leotard who on occasion gets to activate a watch and inflate into a regular blonde quiffed hero.
I much prefered it to dragonslair
classic beginning sequence :)

If i recall correctly from my toddler years, wasn't this game almost impossible to play? i remember something about never even passing the first scene....
Yep, that's also what i remember. Contrary to Dragon's Lair, Space Ace was more about mainly plugging coins into the slot without playing this much. At least for me...
I would have liked it if it had been less hectic. Graphic wise it's brilliant as Dragon's Lair (by the way what is Don Bluth doing today?) but i just found it ways harder to play and Dragon's Lair overall was more polished in my opinion.
And i still question myself: How good is the DVD quality compared to the laserdics version? Are there artifacts in the DVD version? Laserdisc looked so alive...
i have the laserdisc but no dvd from this .
Wow! Do you also have the player? A video in which you play through the whole game?
I'm considering buying the HD version but it has two downsides to me: a) it's not running on osx and b) shouldn't there come out a blueray version and shouldn't i be able to play this on a ps3 then?

If Dragon's Lair was a game, I'm a banana! :)
Classic case of GFX over content.
Welcome banana!
Personally i don't care where the fun exactly comes from. If it's the gameplay, the graphics, the sound, the atmosphere, ...
Only question is: Do i enjoy it? And i did enjoy Dragon's Lair a lot! :O)
Watch a movie, then. :)
Nope! I wouldn't have been able to swear when i hit the joystick too late or pulled it to the wrong direction... :O)
By the way i've learnt the directions in italian by this: sinistra, destra, ...
So you see beside of monkey trained reflexes i also would be less educated in my foreign languages... ;O)
its the characteranimation in my case
Just press random buttons on your remote while watching the film, and swear when nothing happens - same experience as Dragon's Lair. :P
Seriously, that was a godawful 'game'.
It's a marvel in a lot of disciplines: Beautifully drawn&animated (Hello, it's Don Bluth!), the colours are so wonderful, great scenario and sets/traps, great humour, fantastic sounds.
I love it! :O)
Undoubtful it's a fantastic unique game! It's the laserdisc game!
The question is more: Why am i even talking to a banana about this?! :O)
My point exactly. You sound like you've just described a film! :)
Contrary to a movie i wouldn't have had the chance to enjoy and be afraid of randomly choosen levels. Ahh great! I shiver when remembering these times.
I get thirsty when thinking of the bad air in the gambling houses. Hmm, now where is my liquidizer again? I feel like a banana milk shake could be the right thing now... ;O)
lol. Heh, well, if you like it, you like it. Fair enough. It does sound like your enjoyment of the game has a lot to do with nostalgia, though... which is no bad thing, actually. ;)
Ah...Dragon's Lair. Used to play it a lot with my dad, I think we rarely made it past the first stage!
Did the timing have to be stupidly accurate or something? And how was you supposed to work out which direction to move the joystick - was it just trial and error?
big10... it has a lot to do with nostalgia... but you also gotta remember that there was NOTHING like it at the time. We were dealing with cheese 2D graphics that everyone was oohing and ahhing over and then... What's this? A game with full screen animation by Don Bluth!?!? WTF?!?!? It was beyond anything anyone had ever seen before in an arcade. And it was worth every quarter someone dropped into it.
I remember people being lined up 20-30 people deep waiting for their 1-2 minute chance at the game when it first came out. When someone got on it that was good, there was a crowd gathered around trying to see how he did it... And marvel at the amazing animation.
Nowadays... Yeah. It's gameplay is merely under-par and the animation can be done on any computer worth more than a few hundred dollars. But at the time... WOW.
Toatally. I remember when I first saw it in an arcade in the 80's - I was amazed. But then I played it...
:)
and how was you supposed to work out which direction to move the joystick - was it just trial and error?
Certain objects/floors of the screen will flash, and depending where it was most on the screen (to the left, right, up, or down) is the direction you hit on the joystick. If your sword flashed, then the action button was hit.
Least that I recall anyway.....should go boot-up my PC copy of Dragon's Lair2 and have some fun, there's not another game out that starts with a hero getting booted out of a house with a fat lady chasing you all over the place screaming her head off because her daughter is missing.

This was significantly improved upon in Space Ace 2 and Dragon's Lair 2.
In the first Dragon's Lair, there was quite a bit of trial and error mixed inter-mixed with the "move toward the flash".. (I don't think Dirk's sword ever flashes in the first one)
I discovered a continuity problem:
Lizard king room: You're supposed to be chasing after the pot of gold that's stolen your sword. But as you're running, look at your belt.
Anyone who follows Mame, Aaron Giles is implementing the Laser Disk stuff and will start by implementing Dragons Lair - check here for further info

Regarding the compression: Would a blue-ray version also need compression? I don't think so... :O)
Hmm...
Audio: 2*16bit*44.1khz*60*60=606MB
Video: (if i'm right with the laserdisc resolution of 425x440 on pal)
425*440*24bit*30fps*60*60=56GB
Sums up to 57GB uncompressed for an hour.
With lossless compression you should be able to squeeze it down to 1/3 which fits on a single layer blue-ray disc. Without any compression you're done on a three layer blue-ray disc. :O)
I got the avi based tripple game CD years ago
having access to the movie in this form made me wonder about blitzing it ... not that ive ever blitzed anything bigger than hello world in more than god knows how many years
i liked the idea of the DVD game edition, did it ever make it to the uk? i never looked, but i paid £5 for the CD and the DVD was iir $20 at the time ... why would i want and or need it save for better movie quality.
played and got stuck on the xbox version liked the look and feel but an easter egg of the original would have been nice.
btw was the amiga version very short in that movie or just me?
The amiga version was short and didn't include all the levels from the laserdisc.
still looked nice though
in a limited kinda way
way better looking than the c64 version ;-)
Yep the c64 version was just awful. The only level which was kind of fun was the platform diving with the wind. Although i bought the amiga original (can't remember how many discs) i couldn't enjoy it as much as the original. Always waiting for the next italy holiday... :O)
Hello.
Ah, the c64 version. Fantastic! One of the first games that actually had streaming going on, ie, it loaded the next level while you played the current.
And to say it's awful is a little bit harsh considering the constraints of the system.
Goodbye.
Wasn't The Bard's Tale 3 streaming before? I know some people who had problems with their 1541 after this one.
The C-64 version was actually a port of the Coleco Adam's version.
The C-64 or Adam version wasn't really a port of the arcade game, but rather a licenced re-imagining, so it's difficult to compare it to the other versions. (It was basically an entirely different game with the Dragon's Lair name slapped on it)
On it's own, it was an alright game, but there were others in the "mult-mini-game" genre that did a better job (Aztec Challenge was good, as was the game based on the "Aliens" movie)

It might be more than that. I recently played my Dragon's Lair DVD on my HD widescreen television, and it scaled to widescreen without distortion or black side bars. I didn't verify how much it changed from the full frame version (it could have very well zoomed into the full frame to eliminate the black bars). It didn't seem to lose any of the frame from the top or bottom of the screen though...
DVD has a larger horizontal resolution but what i've looked up for laserdisc was 425.
anyone (taumel) needs a LD/CD PLayer .
if have two - one standard and one with a selfmade NTSC modification.
meeeeeeeeeeeeeee tooooo !!!!
I liked Space Ace alot better. But Dragon's Lair
was certainly something special when it came out.
Space Ace was more fun, ' de de de - de de de de de '
you cant win !!!
:O)
