sockel AM2 or Intel dual-core plattform what is the future ?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/sockel am2 or ? both, but intel is cheaper and faster in the mid range at the moment (in the UK) so it depends, bit of a hard question to answer. ive got amd and will prob stick with them.
The question is will 64 bit or multi-core processors survive regardless of who makes them?
I have spouted on about the 64 bit scandal on these forums before.
I have asked further questions over at Tom's Hardware. I want the technical experts to answer.

I think that unless the gaming industry supports 64 bit and/or dual-cores then the whole thing is going to be wasted. There are a hell of a lot of people who use their PC primarily for gaming.

64Bit: Most likely will survive but don't have any use for the near future.
MultiCore: Thats definitely the future.
AM2: No solution. I would bet that this socket is dropped next year or the year after. AMD bought ATI and it is only a question of time until ATIs ring bus system is used for AMD CPUs to raise their multicore power. The current CPU design makes AMD a good joke at best. They were great but didn't try to evolve further since they were leader in performance rankings.

I'm losing the battle - seems most of the people who are overclocking the multi-core CPUs are not gamers. They are putting up a fight for the non-gamer.
I still think the amount of gamers out there is vast and warrants a single core 5GHz chip, instead of a 'yoohoo sailor!' multicore one - I'd buy one.

1. There is no 5Ghz single core
2. As next generation games are multithreaded, a 2x2Ghz Core 2 Duo will outperform an overclocked P4 5Ghz without any problem, multiple times. For a simple reason: It outperforms AMDs most expensive X2 and the single core version of that outperforms any P4 ;-)
Core 2 Duo does not fit in the regular "crap" P4 Ghz numeration system actually. The P-M architecture isn't as weak as the P4 one ... :)

Right now, if you're buying, Intel Core 2 Duo is your best bet.
At the moment i'd go for intel if I had enough for such a big upgrade.

Yup, and they'll also benefit from multi-core CPUs. Most noticably, the game will be able to run on one core, while all the Windows services run on the other. I know there is no 5GHz CPU - that is my point.
Nor is there likely to be one, until we can reliably prevent (or at the very least, predict) electron quantum leaps (not something you generally want to happen inside your CPU). Right now, if you're buying, Intel Core 2 Duo is your best bet.

Actually, heat dissipation is the main bottleneck with an architecture like the P4, or even the new Core 2 Duos. The Pentium 4 easily scales up to 5ghz+ with suitable cooling.

The tables have turned - Core 2 Duo is king now. The Athlon X2 chips are still solid pieces of engineering (unlike the ridiculous hack the Pentium D was), but Core 2 Duo is even better at performance per watt, absolute performance, performance per dollar (at least at the mid range/high end - the $100 Pentium D 805 is all Intel has at the low range, yuck).
