I just got my Wii on Sunday and have since been trying to access one of the channels that come with the system. At first I couldn't even download the system update, but changing my router settings to broadcast on channel 1 instead of 6 seemed to do the trick. Now that my system is updated properly, I tried to go on the Wii Shop channel many times without any success, it just waits at the 'Connecting. Please Wait...' screen for eternity. My question is, has anyone been able to use the Shop channel to buy the virtual console games? If there are people here with online Wiis, I would also like to trade Wii numbers so we can keep in touch (mine is 2720 1162 1608 2112).
Wii-Fi
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Wii-Fi I got mine online just fine. I didn't have to change channels or anything. Perhaps there's some Wi-Fi interference? I haven't actually looked at my friend code for Wii yet. BTW the Virtual Console rocks! I picked up F-Zero, Sonic, Bomberman '93, and SimCity (SNES version was my fav) for $30 ;) I did have to retry my connection once but the 2nd time it just worked.
I got a Wii. So far I love it. Some of the Wii Sports are a bit touchy (boxing and golfing), but except for that I love it.
Great fun! I wish I had another controller to play with 2 people though.

Hehe yeah it really shines in multiplayer party settings. I took my Wii around to 3 households over Thanksgiving and had dozens of people having a blast with it. I picked up 4 remotes and it was killer with people walking around with a drink in one hand and the Wii-mote in the other. The cool part is that it dings you when it's your turn so you can walk about the house and do what you like while other players are playing and it lets you know when it's your turn ;)
Hmmm, I don't know what the problem could be. I guess I'll keep trying, then eventually seek technical support from Nintendo if the problem persists. I tried using my USB ethernet adaptor to do a wired setup, but the Wii has some kind of check in there to make sure you're using their USB to ethernet adaptor, which hasn't even been released yet. That kinda ticked me off...
Aside from those issues, I've been having great fun with Wii Sports and Monkey Ball. It appears that me and my friends are the only ones who think boxing is the best sports game, everyone else seems to favor tennis and bowling.
* edit *
I enabled the virtual DMZ for the Wii and got an error msg instead this time, experimentation continues...

I got it to work! For others that may have trouble, set your router channel to 11, this allowed me to connect. It also may have just been that the server was busy since it's now 2am

For the interested, here is a list of the games currently available for the virtual console, along with the price in Wii points (100 = $1)
Sega Genesis - 800 Wii Points
Altered Beast
Sonic the Hedgehog
TurboGrafx-16 - 600 Wii Points
Bomberman '93
Bonk's Adventure
Super Star Soldier
NES - 500 Wii Points
Donkey Kong
Mario Bros.
Pinball
Soccer
Solomon's Key
The Legend of Zelda
Wario's Woods
N64 - 1,000 Wii Points
Super Mario 64
SNES - 800 Wii Points
F-Zero
Sim City
One thing I didn't like about the point system is that you can only buy them $10, $20, $30, and $50 at a time. This means after buying Super Star Soldier (a sweet shmup) for six dollars I am now left with only 400 points. I'll have to deposit another 10 dollars just to afford an NES game :|
There weren't as many games available as I thought there would be, let's hope that they will add new ones quickly.

They use points for the same reason they use tickets at fairs for buying food, and to a lesser extent, why they use tokens at arcades.
1. You get the situation like you described where you're encouraged to buy one or two more games to use your remaining points... otherwise you'll have "wasted" money.
2. By using points instead of cash it doesn't feel like you're spending cash... You're just using points, and you don't associate the value with the amount of money the item costs as much... so you spend money like water.
3. It's cheaper for them because they get charged a bit for each transaction, and by forcing you to make larger transactions you make fewer transactions. Otherwise instead of buying 5000 points and buying five games and having one transaction, you'd have five transactions going on, unless they set up a shopping cart system, but even if you did most transactions would be for single games.

Oh and after a small dip the day after the Wii launch, my Nintendo stock is going up once more. I've made about $300 off it so far. Almost paid for the Wii. :-)
I might stick with it through Christmas. So far the feedback on the Wii I've seen has been about 90% positive. And polls online show that around 80% want a Wii, 80% want a 360, and only around 17% want a PS3. Some want more than one console which is why the numbers don't add up to 100. Slightly more people seem to want Wii than the 360, but it is maybe less than a percent difference.

What about us people who still own their original NES cartridges? I'm not paying again :P
Great idea though... I'll stick to my PSP emulators thanks :)

Cyg:
You could probably sell those carts for more than it would cost you to buy the game on the Wii in that case. :-)

800 Wii points? That sounds silly, why not just use real money?

$1 USD = 100 points
Guess they could have used real money since VC downloads are region-based, but regardless, it's better then Microsoft's Marketplace points which require a calculator handy...
Anyways, I added you two (Eikon & Sswift) to my F-list, my code for those who want to bother with the system is as follows :
3579 9351 4789 2686
(thank god Nintendo realized the faults of the Friend Code system of the DS and made it per-system rather than per-game with the Wii)
Kinda cool how I can e-mail the system also, didn't know that was doable. Now to see if it accepts attachments....
[EDIT] Hmm, strange, my Wii has yet to receive the two e-mails I sent it (one HTML, one plain-text), and the system does indeed work on the net as I've updated/purchased VC games with it.
(nor could I message you two {Sswift & Eikon}, but I was assuming that it was due to the fact both sides of the group need to register one-another before that's allowed)
[EDIT2] Nevermind, seemed I had to reply to the message the Wii sent my e-mail directly as-is back to it first before sending normal stuff.
[EDIT3] And it appears I was wrong, as it accepted all my plain-text e-mails before my "reply" one got on the thing, guess the thing only checks for messages every 15min or something for bandwidth conserving reasons.
(which was a concern I had when Nintendo mentioned long ago the Wii would download demo's/media overnight for you to look at/have fun with in the morning)
[EDIT4] Damn, I'm going to love this system when some good multiplayer games start coming out and kick ass/get ass kicked by you guys.
I'm also curious as to whether or not Nintendo will introduce the ability to see what your buds are up to (which permission required from said user for stupid privacy reasons of cource).... like the XBLive! service has.
The points allow for a universal currency. At least I assume.
Think about how high they are? I imagine it is because the points are comparable to numbers in japan.
Also, they just have to update the costs to buy new points, not all the prices.
Then they can also adjust prices later and it will still make sense.
You can tell your UK friend what something will likely cost... we'll have to see if the prices are really the same when the UK people get their Wiis.

I have added both you and sswift as friends, yet you both remain grayed out in the address book. What else do we need to do to be able to send messages to each other? For people to send messages both have to add one another. I just added you and Genexi, so whenever it decides to update it should stop being greyed out. Maybe connecting to the shop channel or something will speed things up?
Sswift, Eikon, Genexi2, I've added your numbers. Here's mine: 6786 1808 4774 2806
It appears I've received something from you (Eikon/Sswift), my Wii lit up a good hour ago, problem is, bro is sleeping in said room my Wii is in, so can't check it out atm.
(he really needs to finish renovating his room he started work on 5 months ago -.-)
Got your number listed down po, will add it tomorrow.

That would be Eikon. He sent a message and a bunch of Mii's. I just sent my Mii to you both.
