I've just been given a Amiga 600HD! :D
Problem is, I've just opened up the box, and shock horror no workbench disks :'( does anyone know how I can get hold of some, I'm not even sure what revision it was for the 600 (thinking its 2.05?)
I recon I could get some adf's onto disk (CrossDOS?), but without wb I'm pretty stuck.
also what rom upgrades work with 600? could I take it up to 3.1?
Please help, I cant wait boot this thing up and revisit my youth ;)
I'm fairly sure it came with Workbench 2.04. As for where you'd find it, I tried all the 'usual places' and drew a blank. You might find a cheap copy on eBay or somewhere, or look for an Amiga forum and ask on there. There's probably a few people still there.
Is the hard drive not bootable?
hard drive, good point, I'll wire it up and find out, I never had one with a hd, so thought it was just for storage (for some reason :/ ).
Thanks GfK
Nah, you copy the workbench disk to your hard drive, and it boots up. Simple as.
oh balls, it doesnt have an arial cable in the box, and it seems the modulator doesnt have a standard connection, so old VHS cable wont work. :'(
anyway, disk drive was clicking like it was waiting for a disk, so I take it the HD is empty?

As may this:
http://www.amiga600.de/a600capab.htmIn summary, the A600 shipped with the 2.05 ROM and can run Workbench 2.1. You can upgrade the ROM to 3.1 and run Workbench up to 3.9.
Thanks vinylpusher! Just orderd a 3.1 ROM :D
Now gotta try and get an arial cable :/ *EDIT* found one
I have a miggy->vga adapter.
I'm holding on to it for dear life though, on the understanding that I will, one day, pick up an A1200 ;)
**EDIT**
I wonder if my Dell 2405 supports 15KHz modes via VGA? I does s-video and composite, so it obviously has the internal gubbins to support the modes.
**EDIT 2**
Nope, it doesn't :(
One of the tricky bits is that the Amiga used an 880KB floppy format that a standard PC drive can't deal with, IIRC...
So even if you have a disk image of the workbench floppies around, they won't do you any good unless you have a working Amiga that can write them to floppy for you.
It's alright xlsior, the 3.1 ROM I orderd comes with WB, problem solved ;)
xlsior: This problem has now been solved. Initial solution required the use of 2 floppy drives in your PC. I can't recall if that limitation was ever overcome.
