My PC is more powerfull than a Wii..

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/My PC is more powerfull than a Wii..

I just finished watching a Game show on Bravo 2 which showcased games for the next gen consoles. I saw games for the Xbox360, Wii and PS3.

I know there are a lot of Wii lovers here but seriously, the games I saw for the Wii were terrible. Graphically they weren't pleasing to me as I've seen and played games on my PC with 10X the details and framerate of the Wii. Also, I'm not to happy with the way the controls work on the Wii. I know I haven't tested it but just looking at how people play the games and how it works doesn't appeal to me.

People will Probably Buy a Wii regardless because Nintendo have a very good track record of good games but if they all require flailing my hands about then I think I'll skip buying one.

The PS3 games on the other hand looked lush. I saw Tekken 6 and Virtua Fighter and both looked amazing. Plus, the PS3 games are what i would like most to play. Virtua Tennis 3 looked the biz on the PS3.

I dunno! I have a feeling that the PS3 is going to be the console of choice for tru next gen features and games.

My Wii is always more powerful than my PC, especially first thing in the morning.

Lol, See what a mean? How can anyone take a console seriously when it's called a Wii?

I'm going to pre-order a PS3 now. It'll cost me £549 but I don't care.

Amon,

The whole thing about Nintendo is gameplay not the 'best graphics'. They decided a long time ago to concentrate their efforts on fun.

The idea is that Wii controls are pretty unique and allow none gamers to quickly get drawn into having a bit of fun with the games.

There is a PS3 controller also has similar 6 axis motion detection within in it, but you are right the graphics will be more lush/detailed on PS3.

Most general gaming people won't afford the PS3 at that price - so expect a price drop within the first year I reckon.

After seeing the poor review the PS3 got, I'm staying well clear until it's fixed. It took Microsoft a long while to get the Xbox 360 firmware to a point it should have been at when they released it and it seems Sony are in the same position.

I was all for the Wii until I heard you have to set up a sensor thingy under (or on top of) your TV. I hear tell that unless you are directly in front of your TV, the aiming is a little off. Bit of a pain if there's 4 people on a sofa trying to do multiplayer.

It's not hard to adjust at all vinylpusher. Besides, unless you are playing a game that users the pointer functionality (i.e. a FPS) it doesn't matter anyhow. Wii sports tennis, for instance, instead picks up the motion of the controller. You could be facing backwards for all it cares.

The thing about the Wii is...well, you can' t play Wii games on your PC. You can't play them on XBox or PS3. Most XBox and PS3 games however will be ported to the PC sooner or later.

I'm not against the XBox or PS3, I'll probably pick up one or the other down the road. But for now, I've got my PC for the more "serious" games (god I hate the phrase) and the Wii for everything else (including catching up on a bunch of Gamecube games I missed)

Well as in regard to XBox and PS2, barely any of their games have been ported to PC, maybe on XBox and with some of the big hits, but I have loads and loads of games on my PS2 and PS1 that will never see the light of day on a PC.

Sure the Wii is graphically inferior to the PS3 but games such as Zelda are still real works of art. You really have to experience it to see the love and attention to detail that Nintendo consistently puts into its products.

I have nothing against the PS3 or the XBox 360 but it`s the same old thing over and over again with better graphics. You may be impressed with these games when you first see them but if there`s no gameplay to back them up you still get bored with them no matter how pretty they are.

The DS has proved that even though the PSP is graphically leagues ahead people are starting to realise that the fun factor is more important than eye candy. I feel this will continue to ring true for the Wii too. At least Nintendo are willing to try something different and it must be a big risk for them so I`m sure they have the utmost confidence in what they are doing.

Jason.

Find a PC that is as powerful as the Wii for $250 and you may have a point there. I just got done with an all night Wii session at a friends house, we only had one controller but were able to take turns on Monkey Ball and Wii Sports. The whole fun of the thing is about getting up and getting into the games. Even when everyone realized that you could sit and do the motions, most still chose to stand up and move around.

You really have to get your hands on it before you can understand the amount of possiblities with this controller. I am going to buy one just for the exercise I'll get with Wii boxing and tennis. The boxing bag training game is pretty hard work, you'll get worn out after only a few games.

Wii Sports is the perfect example of Nintendo's stance on gameplay over graphics. They can use stick figure characters all day long when the games are as fun as this.

Agreed :)

Jason.

You have a point. The thing is relying soley on just game play isn't going to satisfy the bigger (I want teh best graphics) crowd.

You can't get a PC more powerful than the Wii for $250 so I was wrong to complain. I'm just hoping that Nintendo don't fall flat on their backsides like Sega did by releasing underpowered hardware compared to the competition.

I'm just hoping that Nintendo to fall flat on their backsides like Sega did by releasing underpowered hardware compared to the competition.

They have too many irons in the fire to go the way Sega did. They have such a stranglehold on the handheld market, despite the PSP being a far superior machine that they'll still make squillions no matter how much of a failure the Wii is. The N64 was a failure and that didn't stop 'em. The Gamecube was a failure and that didn't stop 'em. If the Wii fails too, I can't see that stopping 'em.

In theory, I couldn't agre with you more though. I've said a few times before that they should stop messing around with hardware and just make like Sega and concentrate on games. I don't care how many squillions they make. They'd make many squillions more if they stopped piddling it away on hardware no one cares about and just made games for all the consoles. I mean seriously, for all the positive things you hear about the Wii, how many people have you heard of buying it because they liked the hardware? I can't think of one. Even the people I know who are trying to get one are moaning that it isn't HD, doesn't have a HDD, isn't as powerful as a PS3, and yet they still want one. All that's left is the games and the gimmicky controller, and Nintendo could make those for all the formats.

Well, considering they're the only company making a profit with each console sold (which was also the case with the Cube and N64) I don't think they'll be out of the game any time soon.

the bigger (I want teh best graphics) crowd

There's a much larger "I don't currently own a console or play games" crowd out there.

Well, considering they're the only company making a profit with each console sold

Don't believe everything you read.

Well, give me some sources or some reason not to.

There's a much larger "I don't currently own a console or play games" crowd out there.

I fail to see your point. I'll try though. Are you saying that there is a bigger crowd who do not care? If so, then how would that effect the crowd wanting faster, better more powerfull consoles to play on.

I'll like the GameCube games still so if the Wii is any better it'll rock. For FPS and RPG I'll use my PC, for fun and kids games, I'll use the Wii.

Well, not only can the Wii have better games than some of the other next-gen consoles, but with the motion-control Wiimotes, you can get a lot of exercise playing a game, too. Maybe it's Nintendo's way of cracking down on couch/mouse potatoes. I mean, they know the problem that most people have when all they exercise are their thumbs/fingers on a joystick. With motion-control, that'll change things around a bit so you're not as lazy playing a round of Wii Sports. I mean, Nintendo did this during the original NES as well with that floor pad that you played that Track Meet game with. Nice to keep gaming healthy, literally.

Sega arguably failed because they kept releasing stuff (MegaCD, 32X, Saturn) and dumping it early, thereby losing consumer confidence. That and all their Commodore-esque internal issues. Their hardware wasn't necessarily underpowered - the Dreamcast was pretty good actually.

Nintendo seem to have done OK with their last few console releases selling 20-40 million, which almost puts them in niche status anyway. I'm sure the Wii will sell just as many if not more, and Nintendo are going to support it properly, unlike Sega.

Just realised that the above should have been "I'm just hoping that Nintendo don't fall flat on their backsides like Sega"

I've edited the original post also.

And the point of this thread is...?

I actually like the Wii hardware myself. All those extra specs of the PS3 and XBox360 don`t really appeal to me. I just want fun games. If I wanted photo reality I`d just go take a walk.

Seriously though, Nintendo haven`t even revealed the specs of the Wii as they are so determined to head in a different direction to their rivals.

Jason.

I don't enjoy Nintendo's gameplay myself, typicaly they are too pick up and play, more like the old coin op arcade games. Repetitive simple game mechanics just doesn't last for me.

On the other hand I probably only like about 5% of all games, but most of those are on PC and Xbox.

I know everyone has different tastes, but often for me when I talk to people who like nintendo it's more to do with nostalgia and familiarity and getting a warm fuzzy feeling from their youth and identifying with past times than it is in the games themselves. I respect that, but for the most part their games are the same old simple fare relying one one or two new gimmicks to make them different each time.

Essentially they are simple, boring and repetitive. After the first 20 minutes things don't really change enough to make persevering worthwhile.

You can build a PC better than a ps3. The whole point of Wii is that it doesn't try to rely on power.

In My opinion we are not really in the "next" generation yet anyway. XBOX 360= XBOX 1.5 , PS3 = PS2.5 , Wii = Gamecube 2.1 . The only thing any of the companies offer are somewhat gimmicky.

I'm getting a Wii. It's only $250.00 , the games are 50 bucks apiece and I know I will really enjoy Zelda with the Wii-mote controls.

I have a bunch of Gamecube games and a couple of wavebirds so that shaves off the initial cost.

PS3 does nothing for me now. Maybe next year when having a Blu-Ray player means something and they do their first price drop.

I buy game consoles for the games that it plays, Right now, I am really excited about Zelda, Metroid and some of the other games that take advantage of the new control scheme.

Gears of War = nice looking FPS. My next PC will play the PC version. (I know MS said they are not making a PC version of Halo...er Gears of War but they will)

XBOX 360= XBOX 1.5 , PS3 = PS2.5 , Wii = Gamecube 2.1
Actually, the Wii is twice as powerful as the GC...
This is the same as the GC compared to the N64, and nobody said they were the same thing.
The Wii also has built in Flash memory, a refreshing menu which does not hesitate to be fun, and virtual console. People just don't pay much attention to them because they find the controller interesting enough. (Which devalues the gimmick claim, since gimmicks are generally very stupid, very useless, and very quickly forgotten. (Eg: "A fish tank! ...With a picture of a fish on the bottom!")

Regarding repetitive gameplay, I completely agree with you, Evak.
Nintendo is getting a bit better about not doing that as much lately (even with the DS, incredibly), but they still do the occasional stupidly uninteresting thing.
The only reason those old classics are repetitive time wasters is because they couldn't fit much else! (It was not to improve gameplay, though it was definietly quite wonderful at the time).
I, too, like games that get more and more interesting as I play them and that are never fully discovered until the very end. (And yes, an ending is a very good thing).

360: No point. Even my mid-range thing here can run 360 games. Not well, but it can run them. Then with a slightly newer PC, games like Oblivion work far better than on the 360 with nicer graphics. (Largely thanks to the distant tweak which makes distant landscapes look nicer).
Although, regarding cost... I noticed a price comparison that put the 360 above the cost of the PS3 thanks to XBox Live. It was a pretty stupid and unbalanced comparison, though.

PS3: Equally little point. As we know, the big game developers these days make games for every platform to maximize profits. This means that the PS3 will be held back by the hardware of the 360 since these quick profit games are rarely very scalable and so will be made to run on the less powerful system. The artwork will definietly rarely change, at any rate.
So why bother buying the more expensive PS3 when games will be tailored to work on the 360 anyway?
Similarly, the developers who are a bit more adventurous (and thus are more focussed on making a good product and less so on making the product run on all the consoles) would probably aim for the cheaper dev kits (Not PS3).

Actually guys. This is nothing to discuss.

There is no secret that Wii is less powerful. So was the Gamecube and in some aspects the N64.
Still when both X-BOX and PS keeps the mainstream angle aiming for "safe" titles and mainstream gameplay NINTENDO has always looked for alternative gameplay, new ideas and also another targetaudience (finding games for all ages is way easier on nintendomachines which is not the case with the other 2)

Yes, im a hardware-, FX- and performance-junkie myself but when it comes to choosing a gamestation for me and my son there is no doubt that Wii will offer the most fun and entertainment for both of us.
I say that Nintendo gives me an alternative gameplay that my PC doesnt offer. For me X-BOX and PS represents the same games that comes to the PC.

I'm sold on the Wii. Today I took my closed-minded 60 year old dad who refuses to play anything that requires eye-hand coordination. He plays sudoku, card games. Sometimes tetris. Some puzzle games. And feels that most of the games he plays aren't worth paying more than 1$ to own.

That said.

I handed him the wiimote and told him to press A to go (Excite Truck) and to turn the wiimote to turn the truck.

Not only did he actually do better than me. He had a big smile on his face and laughed a few times when he crashed.

He enjoed himself.

He would never buy a wii. But he won't buy an HDTV until they cost like 250$

He won't buy new PCs unless the old one breaks beyond repair.

He is a MAJOR tightwad.

But he turns to me and says "This is almost worth the 250$ if all the other games are this fun."

Nintendo is doing one thing wrong. Sears doesn't have a Wii station, they don't have an HDTV with a Wii hooked up to try to get people interested. The other stores don't have them. Walmart has one and treats it like any other console.

The Wii isn't reaching people like my Dad who mgiht actually buy the thing. They don't know about it. They only get to play it when their kids show them it.

Nintendo should be paying to have displays.

I had to turn in my drivers license as collateral to hold the Wiimote.

There should be a stand in the middle of the mall with a 40+ inch HDTV and 2-4 Wiimotes with steel cords so people can't steal them.... They should take the loss on maybe losing a few Wiimotes to get people to play the thing. They need a cryer getting anyone to just try it out.

People who don't play games, would buy it.

We isn't HD so a HDTV would be pointless. And thats a good thing IMO.

I finally got to play on a Wii yesterday and it's as good as I imagined. It's easily the most important thing to happen to video games since the DS.

The lack of power may be a bugbear to some but ultimately it will prove to be a big advantage as it cuts development budgets drastically which means publishers are more likely to fund innovative titles.

If this takes off (which it will) I'll be happy for Nintendo to stay one generation behind on a tech level.

I played Gears of War today too. Beautiful. I had more fun with Wii Golf.

this thread is pointless. if you like the wii get it if not then don't get it

personally i love it and mine will be here in a few days. grpahics don't matter to me. i mean come on it is a good pricepoint, pretty good graphics and fun games.

i would rather play combat on an old atari than play a crappy game with great visuals

Well, right now, I'm waiting for a Sunday circular that has EB/GameStop offering an upgrade trade special, much like when they had that special when you upgraded an Xbox to an X360, they could do that again for the other two consoles, we just have to see when they get the supply to make that offer happen.

next-gen features? which are? Nothing more than graphics for ps3, imo. Wii's next-gen 'feature' is new style of gameplay. xbox360's counter for next-gen 'feature'? I believe is the unparalleled online capabilities it has compared to ps3/Wii. Each system has something it's focusing on. Better for us gamers I suppose. The graphics whores can play ps3/360 while the ones that are more into playing in groups with friends for shorter bursts of gaming can play the Wii.

I have both a 360 and a Wii and love them both for their own reasons. I play the 360 alone or with online buddies, while the Wii I can invite a group of friends over and have a blast playing games we can all actually play together. I hate going over to a friends house and playing some [insert old gen system here] and simply not being able to put any decent competition because the system is alien to me or the game isn't as accessible, which in turn leads to less party gaming. Sorry, not everyone is a Halo pro. The Wii does a great job of getting over this barrier.

I know there are a lot of Wii lovers here but seriously, the games I saw for the Wii were terrible.

I took it they showed mainly launch-title games?

If so, no surprise there, 75% of the launch titles look last-gen, or just crap altogether.
(I mean sure you won't hit the eye-candy/polygon processing levels the PS3/360 are capable of, but a game doesn't need said eye-candy/polygons to at least not look/run like crap)

Anyway, just playing Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube shows what can be done in the graphics department when a game is developed by a talented developer. And as I have said, despite Zelda being a Cube game it still looks fantastic in my eyes.

Jason.

I know there are a lot of Wii lovers here but seriously, the games I saw for the Wii were terrible.

That line says it all really. Did you PLAY or just LOOK ?
