The CPU is a good starting point - plenty of power in the Core 2 - very overclockable and can be replaced with a Quad core in the future.

I have the free Vista upgrade so can choose to install Vista when I want from the upgrade disks.

better than my odd laptop it has s3 graphics chip built in, it can't run a thing, apart from blitz 3d oddly. but it only gets a very low frame rate.

Excitement. I got over-excited at all the new hardware floating about.

The next 9 days are going to drag - I am so close to having what (at the moment) is a dream set-up.

You cannot currently get a better graphics card - it looks like you can't currently get a better motherboard. I admit my new CPU is not cutting edge - but is is good value for money and is way, way better than my current CPU.

The new system has a fair amout of future-proofing. Buying a good motherboard was the key to this.

BTW: 8800 GTX is an excellent choice. A bit pricey but definitely the best what money can buy at the moment.

@puki: just read the news that AMD/ATI has unveiled their next-gen dx10 contender, and so far benchmarks are confirming it as the unofficial winner.
ATI Radeon X2700 is apparently almost 15% faster than 8800GTX, and that is quite a feat.

Too bad you already ordered yours though, as its the same price as your card.
Im really excited about this, and will probably shell out for one as a christmas present for myself :D

So, an extra £85.00 - there was no real need to take the Asus Striker Extreme nForce 680i apart from the 'Bling' value of it. They do cheaper 680i mobos.

Bare in mind people that the 8800 GTX only cost me £316.00

With regard to the new ATI card - I know. However, for my new system I was determined to go for Intel and nVidia.

I'm not worried too much about speed issues of future graphics cards as the 8800 GTX will drop in price as newer cards are released - the mobo can take 3 of these cards - so, as long as DX10 remains the standard for the next few years, I am laughing - I'll just pop in another 8800 GTX from the bargain basket in a year or 2. The main thing here was to get on the DX10 rung.

Now its the GPU next - I've "only" got a X1800XT card.

Also, it is good for the community for someone to soldier on now with this stuff. Lots of people will want to know whether it is worth the upgrade now or not.

I'm still unsure about upgrading to Vista - I have a feeling I may hold out for a long time as I don't want to sever the gaming performance for a whole bunch of DX9 games for the sake of 1 or 2 DX10 ones.

Depends on how well Vista and DX10 cards run DX9 stuff - if everything is fine then I will upgrade to Vista, if not, I'll hold on for a while.

Don't forget the state-of-the-art Auditory Feedback Cooling Confirmation (£15.00 for extra loud fans, so you can hear the quality cooling they're providing for you)

Seriously, do you need them? Extra fans isn't necesarily a good thing. I'd much rather have a silent machine that's "cool enough" than one that sounds like a vaccuum cleaner just to run a couple of degrees cooler. On that note, if possible always go for the 120mm fans over the 80mm ones, the 120mm provide the same cooling power at a slower rotation, leading to much less noise. The smaller the fans, the higher-pitch their noise is, and the harder they are to ignore.
(The 1.5" fans in a 1U rackmount server case are the absolute *worst* when it comes to noise. You'd gladly go Van Gogh after spending any extended time in a room with those puppies)



Eh? Any modern machine uses SATA these days, which are almost the same size by default... Most likely the only cable affected by this will be the floppy cable, if you even got one of those.



Professional wiring? As opposed to having the guy from the mailroom slap 'em in? Good thermal compound can be worth it though, provided that they use it sparingly and not slather a thick layer on like unfortunately way too many people do these days. That was one of the biggest problem with the first intel mac laptops - too much cooling goop, which lead to chronic overheating problems.

But anyway, hardware wise it sounds like a pretty nice rig. Let us know how those LEDs work out for ya. :-)

768MBytes of Video RAM.... thats outrageous - won't be long before a Gig of Video RAM seems 'normal' at this rate. :-}

mrtricks: Why don't you do a self-build? It's ridiculously easy, if a little tedious.

Having said that, I guess it depends on what you're going to use it for. Personally, I get anxious if I know my PC isn't configured optimally. If I bought a pre-built system I'd have to take the thing to pieces just to see if it was put together properly (and using quality components) :)

One barrier to me upgrading is that I'd have to buy DDR2 memory. Now that Corsair have some low-latency RAM available (albeit, running at 2.4v!) I would get annoyed with my PC if it was crippled by slower RAM. Problem is, 2GB of low-latency costs about £340. ouch.

My delivery date on my new alienware laptop is tomorrow... And we're forecast to get 8-14 inches of snow on top of freezing rain. It's sitting in a fedex warehouse 90 miles from here right now. I'm gonna freak out when I don't get it tomorrow because of the weather. :/

Well, mine still has not passed the quality control - so, I suppose Tuesday 5th Is going to be the earliest I see this.

I'm suspicious that this thing has failed the QC for some reason and they are trying to replace something. Or maybe, there are problems configuring the setup. If the system was built on 24/11 and it is not ready yet, then something must be wrong with it.

I stopped buying pre-made PC's from companies after my experience with Tiny!

I bought a laptop from them, it broke three times, I send it back the first two times, then when it went the third time, I was back on the phone.

I got sent around in circles by the automatic call thingy, phone this number, then phone that number, next thing I knew, I was phoning the support number I phoned first, and £1.50 p/m, it wasnt cheap!

Peeved off, I thought I'd give it a few days, next thing I know, I read in the paper Tiny folded! The gits!

I knew I needed a new fan, so I asked a mate to fix it for me, he looked under the chassis of the laptop and the first words he said was 'you've been robbed mate'

Turns out that the fan fitted only had a maximum work life of 6 months! :/

I eventually sold it for £115 for spares, though, the damn thing cost me £1299 and I only had it a year!

That'll never, never happen to me ever again, if I want an uber PC, I'll build one myself, or buy a cheapish second hand one, upgrade it myself, and if it goes tits up, I'll not be fussed about throwing it in the bin!

I actually looked at cyberpower (us version) when I was looking at laptops. Their amd systems are single core only... Their intels are core duo (not core 2 duo)... So I passed them by without even looking at the configurations. Alienware was the only system than had a setup that I was happy with and had it cheaper than relatively comparable systems from somewhere else. Even Dell was a few hundred dollars more, and I've always bought my laptops from dell because they were cheaper with better equipment. Since dell bought alienware evidently they've passed on price savings and the quality parts (though they've always used quality stuff in their boxes).

BUT... I am taking a risk because their customer support is horrid. I know this from experience through a couple buddies that bought alienware boxes before. And my original ship date was 11/8/2006... I finally got it 12/2/2006.

Cheap usually means they skimp on other areas. So just prepare yourself puki. You got it cheap, so prepare for some sorrow in other areas. :)

Agreed - and dissatisfied customers are usually far more vocal than satisfied ones...

Sometime everyone makes mistakes, I once bought a (then super powerful) system from Carrera Technology dual Pentium Pro 200mhz, i t arrived 7 days later. All excited I turned it on and nothing happened except some beeps.

Called them back and they paid to have it returned and I had to wait another 3 days to get it.

Turned out that the HD plug had come loose DOH!!!!

Anyway, that was about 10 years ago, and it was still in daily use till earlier this year, the only problem it ever had was the battery for the bios ran out.

Good luck with your new puter, if its super noisy thats probably because they used a lot of fans for cooling the super hot components. I believe the GF8 uses over 150 watts all by itself. Still there are some great cases like the antec P180 that if you disable the top fan its dead quiet. Thanks to the sound insulating material and seperate quiet HD compartment.

It's not as pretty as yours and costs 2/3 times as much though.

For desktops -- yes... But for laptops, there pretty much are no self-built options, other than 'buy some extra ram seperately and install it yourself'



When I first got my Amiga 1200, I found that while many programs and games ran without problems, some didn't. I knew that not everything was compatible with the 1200, but even some programs that I'd seen run on other people's machines wouldn't run on mine. Brought it back to the place that sold it, and it turned out that the floppy drive cable wasn't seated straight, so two of the pins weren't connected properly. Plugging it in straight fixed the compatibility issues.

I also once had a expansion adapter with FPU and 2MB of RAM for my Amige 1200 die on me, back in the day. System would not boot up, just giving colored BOOT screen indicating bad memory. booted OK without the expansion board. Great... took it out, cleaned all the connectors, checked for loose chips, tried leaving it out for a while and checked again later, etc... Everything looked fine, and no matter what I did it kept indicating bad memory... So I boxed it up and mailed it back to the place that sold it to me ~6 months earlier, under warranty. A couple of weeks later the package arrived in the mail again, with umpteen postal stamps on it, returned undeliverable. (apparently the place I bought it from had gone out of business).

Since I had no other options, I plugged it in one more time, and what do you know -- it worked without error, and continued to work for the rest of the time that I owned the machine.

I guess the postal service employes gremlins that fix electronics in transit... :-?

Maybe the rough handling remoulded the silicon in the chips?

I've just visited their site, they are quoting guaranteed Christmas delivery for anyone ordering before 10/12. Well, in my opinion, they are cutting that a bit fine.

My PC was ordered on 19/11/06 and apparently assembled on 24/11/06. Ten days have passed since then so I have now emailed them to ask if all is well with my order. I've mentioned that tomorrow is the last day I can be home to receive it - I allowed a week after their estimated date.

At the point of my order, the estimated ship date quoted to me was 30/11. Currently, as of today, they are quoting an estimated ship date of 15/12 (11 days) for new systems. They quoted me 11 days too.

I have been waiting now for 15 days with no sign of it coming tomorrow. If they are telling people they can order up to the 9th of Dec, then they are (in my opinion) cutting it fine)

I wonder why it failed QC? Have you asked them?

They didn't quote it as failing QC - all I know is that it was assembled on 24/11 - quality control is supposed to be 72 hours.

They have quoted no info since 24/11 (10 days ago) - I've basically asked if all is well (ie not actually stating my suspicion that something IS wrong)

I got an email back from CyberPower - they say my system is now in QC checking and the system will be ready mid-week - which I guess is tomorrow(ish) - but the fact that they didn't say tomorrow makes me assume Thursday.

So, I may get it by the weekend. Of course, once it leaves them I am then relying on the carriers who are delivering it.

It must be killer for you having to wait all that time for your ultimate pc. Every day gone by is another Intel attempt at the next best thing, or nVidia releasing their latest core. By the time you get it something better will be out.

All that time, you could have been gloating to us, posting killer benchmarks, gloating some more.

Maybe that's why it's taking them so long to ship -- they're waiting for the next generation of hardware to come out so they can buy parts for Puki's machine from the bargain bin instead. ;-)

I found a message left by CyberPower today - they called to say they were going to deliver my computer tomorrow, but they found a fault with the memory so they have to order new memory - my order is delayed some time into next week.

Yeh, this is the computer that they said was going to be despatched circa 30/11.

finding an "error" this late in an order sounds suspecious to me..

I'd order from another company and cancel this order, due to delivery failure on their part..

I'd just go and build my own out of the best parts. But not everyone has a big store like frys 3 miles away and a no questions return policy.

The QC could have failed at any point - I think I only got this message considering I emailed them and they were forced into responding to my email, thus committing themselves to giving me a rough ETA.

Funny how, at the point I emailed (on that day) it was just (on that day) going into the QC tests. They said QC would be completed midweek.

Still, I have decided not to cancel the order. I am intrigued to see this through. I mean once the system arrives I need to make sure it is in tip-top shape.

People must observe and learn from this - this could be happening to any one of you.

I've never really understood why QC takes so damn long.

I've built dozens of PCs for various people - the only problem I've ever had was a PSU which packed up after 8 months and replaced immediately under warranty.

No PC has ever taken me more than a couple of hours from unpacking the components to completion of OS installation.

As a little side note - they shouldn't even have charged your card if they haven't shipped it yet.

Cyber Power have phoned to say my computer will be delivered on Monday 11th. We shall see.

Interestingly, my order status has still not changed since 24/11:

We've got this online HW company in Norway, komplett.no, which, as long as they've got the parts on stock, will normally deliver to you within 3-5 days..
I've don't think I've ever waited more than 3 days for parts they have on stock though..

In fact, they've even got this deal with the Norwegian Postal Service, that if you order your parts before 10am,
you can go and pick up your parts in an automated terminal in Oslo Central trainstation that same night..
Payment is made with your creditcard at the terminal, and a door will open with your stuff in it.. :p

Is it definetley coming on Monday? I don't understand - surely that would involve a carrier delivering on the same day as despatch?

Also, will I get the 1GB flash drive thing? Technically, it appeared on the website the day after I placed my order. However, I think I should get one.

How come it failed the QC on the memory? What memory am I now going to get? It is decent stuff I assume? I heard about some problems with Core 2 and memory and mobos and stuff - you lot do know what you are doing don't you?

They are replacing the memory modules with cheap-generic high latency, ones. You will not get a refund, and you will not receive your system until after the 1/1/2007.

From ordering the components to building it, then replacing any knackered stuff, I'd say seven days MAX!

I wouldnt want this to go any further, I'd cancel, call them shite, email them this thread and state how many potential customers they have lost then explain to them you are going to wage a one man war against them and tell the whole planet to keep away!

So, this must have been altered today and the last phone call was on Friday to say it will arrive today.

However, there is no email to say this is all in hand - most odd.

This thing better come today.

It is now past 5pm UK time and still no delivery.

I tried phoning them (for the first time) today - there was a recorded voice saying 'All our lines are busy at the moment, please leave your message after the tone'. Great - not much point leaving a message then.

This must serve as a warning against anyone taking the risk to use CyberPower. This PC was built (by their own admission) on 24/11 - 17 days ago.

I stayed in for a week from the day they originally said it would be despatched. They said it would be here today so I stayed in yet again for it. 8 days I have assigned to waiting for delivery.

I'm going to email their parent company http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/ in the USA and complain. Although, from what I have heard about the parent company, I can hardly envisage getting much sympathy from them.

I ordered new parts for a PC from www.overclockers.co.uk. They arrived the next day. I built them. Had a new PC working in under 48 hours.

The other factor here is I am praying that, when this thing arrives, it is actually fully working and has no problems. I am dreading a 'return to base' scenario.

The other factor is, I am intrigued as to what 'favour' they have done for me. I mean this PC is so late that there must be some kind of 'goodwill gesture' (bigger hard-drive, 2 x 8800 GTX's). Surely, I won't have to ask? Then again, maybe I will have to point this out.

Why don't you just cancel the order and get a PC from a company that CAN manage to build and despatch a system inside of an entire month?

Well, they have now taken the money - so I am kind of stuck. Plus, I have a morbid curiosity to see this through.

One snag here is CyberPower are amazing at configuring a new system with quality components - even better than Alienware. I'm not sure anyone can beat them on the available options to build a system (other than buying the parts yourself).

make a refund man,this is about big money.why you didn't just built it yourself? it's easy and don't need big additional cost like said on pcworld. i can built it in 1 hour + 30 minute for rechecking. why you were ordering to these guy?all review in pcworld is not always true and mostly not for hardcore user,if wanna good one get alienware

I can build a pc in around 30 minutes. Infact I built my pc in about that time.

I can build 5 PCs in about 10 minutes out of materials found in the woods only and without using my hands.

I hope you get your computer in the end Puki!
