Who`s buying a Wii tomorrow?

So to all you guys in the US, who`s hoping to gets their hands on a Nintendo Wii tomorrow? Please post about it when you get the chance, I can`t wait to see if it lives up to its potential.

Going to hang-out at my local WalMart tomorrow @ 8AM (its opening time), if they have at least 10-16 units in stock, I'm fairly certain I'll be able to score one easily since I live in a pretty low-key area......otherwise I get to make a dashed drive over to the Zellers to hope no one realized they still exist in the town.


According to the majority of stuff I've read, previews, hands-on, reviews the potential hasn't been reached yet, and probably won't be until 2nd-gen titles are out for the thing.

Once someone builds up a nice intuitive library for the motion-sensing/gestures system, I'm sure we'll start seeing some special stuff, but as of now, it appears like games are using simple motions, and a couple specific titles have problems recognizing even them at some points.


Regardless, I just want my Metal Slug Anthology pack, was a shame it got delayed away from the initial launch day.

I pre-ordered it online. I HATE standing in lines.

I tried the Excite Truck game today at the local game shop, I had the hang of the controller in 10 seconds. The graphics were also very nice. If the flight combat game (blazing angels) and the FPS game (COD3) then I may be buying all I can for the Wii and saving the PC for games that don't come out on consoles.

Are the GFX of Wii an improvement on GameCube, at all?

its about 3-4x more powerful (quoted from somewhere, about 2 months back). so yeah, there will be improvements.

Looks like one of the few real problems is that some textures are low-res since it's a Gamecube port. This is quite unfortunate; I hope they realized the folly and never use muddy textures again.

Movement is fluid, and the motion sensing controller makes it possible to move while shooting a bow and arrow or swinging a sword, which can be difficult on other platforms. (I can do it just fine with my PC, but the Wii has the bonus of an analogue stick to make it a bit easier. Two analogue sticks tends to feel a bit weird).


Right now, I'm hoping developers don't all buy into that little gesture recognition system which got a lot of attention a while back. From what I know of it so far, it is severely limited in that it merely recognizes gestures; it doesn't go anywhere beyond being just another way to press a button.
The Wii is far more versatile than that, and unless that library gets a big upgrade we may be faced with a big pile of very boring titles.

GameSpot so far gave it the lowest score, likely because they review based on average score of their 5 categories, rather then appreciation of the product.

It's unfortunate about the lack of component cables, and Nintendo's usual insistence to use proprietary cables.
Only their 2x more expensive cables which are in short supply fit the socket, and they have no excuse; at least with the DS's microphone port, it could be claimed as a usability thing since otherwise both it and the headphone port would look identical.

I wonder if a regular component cable could be modified to fit...

But you know, I don't think I'll preorder anything at EB again... Because they took preorders, they don't seem to think they need to have a midnight sale like everyone else, and they're not even opening till 11am on Sunday.

You'd think they'd treat their most loyal cutomers better. Maybe I'll buy my games at Best Buy to spite them!

It always amazes me that people line up by the dozens in the freezing wind in the middle of the night, just so they can have a first-generation release of an un-proven console.

To be fair, I'm really not into consoles in the first place, but it boggles the mind to buy something that expensive without knowing for sure that the bugs are ironed out first.

I'd absolutely *hate* to spend the time/effort to be the first on the block to have an XBox 360 that is just dying to catch on fire while everyone else will just turn around and laugh at you again with there 1.1 release a week later that doesn't have the overheating problems.

Nintendo have the best chance ever of doing well with this system. If they don't crack it this time they should go the way of Sega and just give up and produce software for other systems. They have certainly produced the coolest looking system so far - what does the PS3 look like? A 1970's video recorder that's what.

I have always admired Nintendo's attitude that it's all about gaming - rather than a multimedia system. Having said that I always felt Nintendo games are for kids.

It will be an interesting battle. It's a shame we programmers can't write for consoles (without massive budgets). I really think that would give a massive boost to a particular system - even if was on a budget label affair.

Not really. A lot of folks are buying it to resell later (well for the PS3 that is). They don't care to have the system. I would of love to get my hands on the PS3 and resell it later, if I knew I had any chance of actually getting one without getting shot or jumped along the way home.

Nintendo is the better out of the 3 anyways. I'm definately picking one up tommorow. I just hope theres some left over.......if not then...oh well.

OK, so that thins the herd a little... But many/most of the people out there do get one because they want it for themselves, so the original statement still stands.

Well, the best I'm going to do is wait for the demand to die down a bit, because I kept getting turned down for a preorder, because I'm dumb to casually walk in on a weekend, and think that I can get a preorder ticket in at EB Games every so often. With my luck, I may score on a Wii sometime in February or March at very least, maybe a little longer. That's about how long it took me to get an X360.

I'll be getting a Wii, but not tomorrow.

I typically let the early adopters absorb the cost and defects of the first production run.

I imagine the hype will die down after the holidays, which is probably when I'll make my move to buy one.


Hmmm... Ironic.

No, from what I'm hearing only about 60% only actually want to actually keep it - this is comming from sources from friends and co-workers who actually were willing to do the waiting in line thing with the rest of crazed fanatics (of the 4 coworkers who waited, only 1 who actually wants to keep it, and my two close friends who also waited only wants to resell it). Reselling something at upwards price of a couple thousands (or apparently more) is well worth it to them. Fact of the matter is, while there are those who genuinely want to play it, there are those who are quite familiar with how much the some of these buyers are willing to pay for the xbox 360 last year, and are planning on doing the same with the PS3.

Needless to say, none of them got it, but all had lots of good drinking stories to tell later on of the madness that went on. Ironically, none of them is waiting for the Wii because they are quite confident of walking in the store and picking one up.
I just don't think its gonna be that easy...... :(

I drove around to several places tonight thinking I might be able to pick the Wii up early at a midnight sale, (and maybe sell my preorder) only to find out that the lady I talked to on the phone at Best Buy lied to me when she said it was going on sale at midnight, and neither Walmart, nor Circuit City were selling it at midnight, except for 24 hour Walmart superstores. So I went to one of those, and found out that people had been champing there for three days and they sold all 34 systems they got in.

The smaller local Walmart supposedly was getting in about 30, and there were about 18 people waiting in line. And the Best Buy also had around that many people. The Circuit City oddly did not have more than three or four so people and they were sitting in their cars not even waiting in line. I also stopped at a Gamestop at a local strip mall, and they were selling them at midnight, but only to people who had preordered. I guess the next time I preorder a system I will go with that Gamestop instead of the stupid mall stores, Best Buy, or Walmart.

It lists the sales numbers and is updated in realtime. Or it predicts the sales numbers anyway. I don't know how accurate it is. But if it is somewhat accurate, the Wii is gonna outsell the PS3 by tomorrow morning. I read somewhere that Nintendo shipped 10x as many Wii's as PS3's were shipped.

While this explains why some people feel the need to stand in line to make a quick buck, it still leaves the real fanatics that couldn't get one themselves willing to shell out insane premiums on a device that they can get for normal retail price a week later.

After watching the GameSpot guys review of Zelda I`m not sure what to think. Personally I think the game is looking great but he mentions things about the poor Wii remote speaker that keeps cutting sounds short and the game being too Zeldary (?) for it`s own good. He also complains about the Wii remote not being responsive and a simple button press for sword strike would be more useful. Music is also criticized but from what I have heard it sounds fantastic.

I`ll reserve judgement until I play it myself I think.

What were UK Edge magazines views on the game to anyone that has seen the latest issue?

Jeff Gerstmann - the reviewer from Gamespot have given many "great" games lower scores than average lately.. maybe he's bored of the whole scene?

I for one WANT zelda to be zelda'y, and I actually LIKE the fact that people don't speak, and only make cutesy sounds.

I haven't really realized, but there's another store I was thinking of preordering from for the longest time, you know F.Y.E., don't ya? Well, I'm sort of wondering if they sold out or not.

I did have a Wii this morning, but now it's been flushed away.

They kinda screwed me over. I had one on pre-order from them. They lead me to believe that they'd get a few (if not several) in and I was something like 10th to pre-order. Come Sunday and I call and all they got was one stinking unit. Had I known they wouldn't get a decent supply I would've woken up early that day and snatched one up at one of the best buys or targets around here :\.

You'll save a Wii up your arse if you don't stop it with the toilet humor.
