Alright, I have to admit I'm a bit wet behind the ears when it comes to networking. I've always only had a single computer and have never really had to set up a router and such. While I understand the concepts of port forwarding and such, I've never actually had to configure it.

Anyhow, my problem is that I can't receive outside connections to my test server when I'm at work. Just an FYI, I'm only doing this for testing and seeing that I'm the only one at my job for my 8 hour night shift, and I'm allowed to use the computer whenever there aren't guests to attend to, I don't think they'll mind.

Anyhow, the connection at work is running through a router into a Nomadix gateway.

I tried to have my g/f connect from our home machine to the external IP of our work network, but couldn't get through. However, I have no problem connecting to websites, using chat programs, etc from the work machine. I enabled my server in the windows firewall and the ports it's set to run on, but yet the outside connection was refused. I'm assuming this is a problem with port forwarding, but I can't access the routers web configuration, nor the gateways.

It seems any program that initiates the connection from my side runs fine, but nothing else is allowed to initiate connections to this machine. Does that sound like a logical assessment? Is there any way I could enable connections to my server from the outside w/o touching the router or gateway?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've tried everything I can think of.

Companies often have tuff external firewalls, often hardware firewalls. You need at least to use a common protocols port number to tunnel them. Telnet maybe.
Other than that I have no idea, without altering the settings of the router.

Correct (most likely). The router must be configured to forward requests on those ports to your machine.

The reason you can go out is that when you connect elsewhere a little bit of extra information is sent along - this lets the other side know where you are in the local network.
