PS3 First Experience ...

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/PS3 First Experience ...

So Target had a demo unit setup and I took Motorstorm for a ride. Initially, the motion sensing was off and the game felt pretty much just like ATV Offroad Fury the first time I played on the PS2. Honestly, though I was much more impressed by ATV the first time I played that.

Motostorm is a mix of ATV and Burnout. After messing around for about 30 seconds I searched for options and turned on the motion sense. It was definitely cool but nothing all that great. It could have been due to the fact that the controller was hooked fairly stiffly to the demo unit or just because good old analog sticks are better and have also just hit their stride in my opinion. Playing something like Geometry Wars with the dual analogs is much more fullfilling that twisting a PS3 controller ... although perhaps when I get my hands around it wireless at home it will feel better.

Graphically, it looked decent but honestly, I didn't notice much that was impressive. Games like Battlefield 2 on the PC and Dead Rising on the Xbox 360 (let alone Gears of War) make this game look so-so. Motorstorm is supposed to be the best looking PS3 game on launch and I think any gamer would probably be better off with a 360 and Gears of War or any of the other numerous titles that look more next gen than the PS3 on the PS3's launch date.

As for the motion sensing controller ... it's too half-assed ... bring on the Wii !!!

Knowing Capcom, they'll release Dead Rising on the PS3, all their exclusives on other consoles came to Playstation eventually (because they weren't making much money on the games)

I think in a years time PS3 will dominate and take over where PS2 left off. The number of available PS2 games in Japan is HUUUGE already! XBox 360 will continue to be underwhelming, except in America though.

The ps3 is overpriced and underpowered (compared to initial ravings from Sony). It will take them years to catch the x360 if they ever do; a lot of people are sick of getting shafted by Sony's attitude towards anyone outside Japan.

All the businessy people don't even count the Wii in the running.. it is going to be sweet when it flys up and stomps ps3 and xbox360 without even being considered as a competitor..

It would be like if the Vsmile-pocket kicked the PSP and DS's ass.

Oh interesting, Nintendo isn't about business and marketing?

It seems they are pretty successful in selling themselves as the poor little underdog whilst charging 50-60€ for their games...

It will take them years to catch the x360 if they ever do;
Why are people under the impression that the XBox 360 is a success?

Nintendo has always been the most innovative one, paying the price of big masses looking for the same gameplay as usual.
This time they seem to get more attention though (and they have learned not to use designs like N64 and Gamecube !!!)

I surely will get a Wii for "my son" as Nintendo is also the only company that actually aims towards children AND adults (te other 2 bullys just go for the action, blood, fastpaced part)

the Wii's motion controller isn't that great either really though. It mostly works by flicking the controller to do what is essentialy a button press and is no where near as versatile as the early ads suggested.

Thats what I gathered from the reviews, not saying thats bad, but its not as freeform and natural as we have been lead to believe. The new Zelda game sword fighting uses a flick to simulate a button press. and with fishing a power casting of the rod is easier achieved with a sudden hard flick of the wrist than trying to simulate the movement of a real rod.

Still, looking forward to playing with one, but dont really expect much.

Recent NPD survey of 16.000 people put the PS3 way above the other consoles in popularity despite the price, mainly due to its library of quality old PS1 and PS2 titles.

> mainly due to its library of quality old PS1 and PS2 titles.

Some people are going to be disappointed then, at least at lunch.

http://news.com.com/Sony+says+PS3+has+trouble+running+older+games/2100-1043_3-6135205.html?tag=nefd.top

lol, last week they were claiming 100% backwards compatibility. To be honest I was kind of surprised and doubted the rumours that the PS3 came with a PS2 chipset onboard.

Evak: The Wii mote is exactly what advertised, but the Devs aren't able to use it yet.
It will take its time to create the needed libraries (for the eye candy no content consoles, those library exist since PS1) so they can recognize more than only 5 gestures accurately and the like.
As well, only 2 games actually use the full potential of the mote and that are the 2 flight games that are so far announced, as they use the "orientation" capability.

The other games mainly use the gyro sensor and targeting sensor which are present within the wiimote.

I also don't think you can evaluate it based on one game, its the game that sucks not the platform.

Knowing Capcom, they'll release Dead Rising on the PS3, all their exclusives on other consoles came to Playstation eventually (because they weren't making much money on the games)

Except for the fact that MS is buying Capcom ... actually due to the fact that Dead Rising was such a success on the 360 ;)

Anyway, as far as the motion sensing controllers go I'll have to reserve judgment on the Wii controller until I play one ... and I mean a game like Wii Sports, Zelda, or Red Steel that uses it to full effect. Unlike the Sony controller the Wiimote is motion sensitive and it has laser pointer type abilities and the motion sensing is in both the Wiimote and the nunchuk. In Zelda for example you can swing the Wiimote for your sword or you can punch someone with your shield by punching with the Nunchuk in your other hand. I also think it's more detailed than you've stated. From what I understand you can apply subtle spin to the ball in the Tennis game depending on how you move your wrist when swinging.

At the end of the day the Wiimote might not be all we want it to be, but at least they went all out in an attempt to get there. The Sony controller was done after Nintendo announced their special setup as a means to steal some thunder and it's truly gimmicky due to the fact that they added it to the standard dual analog. It's not going to bring anyone into games that didn't play before and I don't think it's anymore intuitive than dual analogs for a regular player ... and for that the Xbox 360 controller is infinitely more comfortable etc...

yeah I agree that the PS3 effort was most likely a me too feature thrown in at the last moment.

The PS3 does look well built inside though.

http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2006/1111/ps3.htm

cool cooling system :)
that uses much of the insides as a giant heatsink

I sure hope so. If there's one thing I'm miffed about it's my 360 "frying itself to sleep" so to speak. I still have to mail it out for the recall that was issued so I can play Gears of War! I definitely don't want to have 2 fried consoles this generation!

Back on the Wii front there's this article on Gamasutra:

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=11698

Doesn't really say much that hasn't been said before, just that gamers and non-gamers really had fun with it. I also watched one developer interview on Gamespot and they said there's a stark contrast between the Wii and Gamecube versions on Zelda just because of the Wiimote and it's built in speaker which adds so much to the experience even though it seems like a minor detail.

Some people are going to be disappointed then, at least at lunch.

Oh no! 190 or so out of 16000+ titles don't work correctly!

> Oh no! 190 or so out of 16000+ titles don't work correctly!

It really depends on which of those titles are the 190, out of the 16000+ titles there are about 15900 that really really stink, ok it's only 15800...

But the video footage of the PS3 titles sure look purty

My new PC will make all your flash new consoles as exciting as a calculator that can tell the time.

My new PC will be the best PC in the world and will appear on YouTube.

And i expect you to cheat with your specs/results as much as you do in the games you are playing... :O)

It seems everyone these days is a console critic
I remember people moaning about PS2 before it came out, but it just happened to be in the end just as successful as the PS1 ever was. I can remember the excitment about the Gamecube coming, but that consoles shelf life was about as successful as the dreamcast

PS2 itself was rubbish, but quite a lot of good games came out for it. I've gone off of Consoles now and am back to PC gaming. The games on consoles just arent good enough to justify the cost and limited uses for the systems.

It's funny Evak but I was about to say the exact same thing but with PCs in regard to consoles.

I mean a guy in this thread:-

http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/posts.php?topic=64935

is asking for "good PC games with split screen mode, or anything that we can play with two players on one screen".

I mean, if you have to use a SNES emulator to make a console for your PC to have some fun 2 player games, I didn't realise PC games had got THAT bland.

The PC gaming is pretty much a non existent gaming platform in Japan meaning that the choice of decent games and variety of genres in the PC world is, well let's be honest, shocking! And of course any games that do get converted to PC get the benefit of running on Windows and crashing/often running poorly, unless you've got an X-Box though in which case you'll likely experience crashing as well.

> Why are people under the impression that
> the XBox 360 is a success?

Why do people keep buying new versions of Windows? Some things in this world just cannot be explained.

I disagree. Personally I have always preferred console games to PC ones. Maybe it`s just a personal thing but there aren`t many PC games that can grab my attention in the same way as something like Zelda can.

Jason.

I sure hope so. If there's one thing I'm miffed about it's my 360 "frying itself to sleep" so to speak. I still have to mail it out for the recall that was issued so I can play Gears of War! I definitely don't want to have 2 fried consoles this generation!

That's hilarious. The whole idea of a console is it is a uniform and completely stable environment. There should be no such thing as a crash on a console.

MS is doing a couple of things that worry me. It seems like Vista's crippled OpenGL support and the XBox360 / XNA are both designed to force all developers to use Microsoft's design environment. (Someone told me 3D World Studio ran at like 12 FPS on Vista.) Using Microsoft's development environment would put me out of business, as my productivity would fall to zero. The reason I make money is I can put out software with BlitzMax and OpenGL that would take a team of programmers to write in C/C++ and DirectX.

The best case scenario is that the XBox 360 fails and the GPU manufacturers takeover where MS neglected on OpenGL, so that anyone running Vista is expected to be using a DX10 GPU. I think there's too many developers using OpenGL to shut them out.

The X-Box 360 will certainly fade away after a while and go as stale as the original X-Box did. But that won't stop MS trying to assimilate you into using their software, sadly that will continue until some government steps in and shuts MS down on charges for cruelty to PC hardware.

Well you could use C# and managed DX which seems to be about as easy as BMax to use from most reports I got.

In other news on the console frying front, I've now played 2 seperate PS3's in two seperate stores that froze on me while I was playing ... and this is only a day or so after they were placed in the stores :( I think I will be selling my PS3 ('s) on Ebay ... as I can't even think of a single game that comes out on launch day I want to play.

Better EBay the Wii as well then. Unless you need a $250 alarm clock from hell.

http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/wii/wii-freeze-too-207742.php

Why are people under the impression that the XBox 360 is a success?

It isn't? Please enlighten with a link or two.

I've now played 2 seperate PS3's in two seperate stores that froze on me while I was playing ..

Anychance the demo's were just buggy?

It didn't take much for me to make a 360 freeze up and completely reset playing the Fight Night Round3 demo a few months back at a FutureShop kiosk.
(as much as I'd like to bash PS3, I decided to stick to being reasonable. ;/ )

LOL, great! Nintendo's products are usually so great too! My sister's Game Boy has been through the washing machine 3 times. I also read a story about some mountain climbers who went up Everest and the only electronic devices that still worked were the DS's they took.

@Warren - a quick google search for "xbox 360 sales worldwide" will reveal an OK sale.
Microsoft have sold 6million consoles up until now, and are expecting to "sell" 4 million more by the end of december. (by "sell", they mean to retailers, not consumers)
I would describe it as carefully optimistic.
Gears of War will probably help aswell.

Jeremy:
I also read in Nintendo Power years back about a housefire in somebody's basement.
This guy's Goldeneye cartridge melted with his N64. Everything worked fine, you just
could never change games! (Thank goodness it was Goldeneye and not Hexen)

Oh no! 190 or so out of 16000+ titles don't work correctly!

actually, Sony has admitted that about half of all earlier PS and PS2 games aren't working correctly..

out of the 16000+ titles there are about 15900 that really really stink, ok it's only 15800..

Oh, you've played the full range, have you?

It seems like Vista's crippled OpenGL support

... doesn't exist...

Someone told me 3D World Studio ran at like 12 FPS on Vista.)

Did they have -any- drivers installed?!?

Using Microsoft's development environment would put me out of business, as my productivity would fall to zero.

If you don't have a commercial license, XNA does not create standalone executables anyway (which means the only other people who could play your games are those with XNA subscriptions also - not a good business model if you ask me).

Sony has admitted that about half of all earlier PS and PS2 games aren't working correctly..

'Correctly' includes things like slow memory card usage and graphical effects half working, etc...

'Correctly' includes things like slow memory card usage and graphical effects half working, etc..
and from what Sony is saying, graphics doesn't work at all (ie. blank screen), and sound not working at all (ie. no sound), and games just freeze and lockup.. a lot of games won't even boot etc..
and.. when Sony admits this, you can bet that the problem is way worse than what we were first told..

I think time after time they'll get this working and honestly i wouldn't buy a PS3 to play old games in the first place.

Microsoft have sold 6million consoles up until now, and are expecting to "sell" 4 million more by the end of december.
So assuming their projected sales are correct, they will by December have sold slightly less than the Sega Dreamcast, at a cost of over 4 billion dollars.

Doesn't sound much like a success to me.

That 4 Billion dollar number applies to the original xbox only AND is actually from Sept 2005!
Who knows what it's at now. This article says that it get worse when you count the loss from the 360.

When the original PS2 first came out, the support for original PS1 games was apparentely pretty bad, and it couldn't even play commercial DVDs properly, but when I got my PS2, all my PS1 games worked on it too and DVD play was fine too.
As ever with any new console these days, wait a year.
By that time all the games that should have been released, will have been released, it'll be half price and they'll have improved the CD lens. That's been the trend for many of the other consoles.
(Except for X-Box, that just seems to be unreliable all the time)

I still have my original 2001 Xbox working as good as new. The original Xbox went through 3-4 different drive DVD upgrades, originaly Thompson that only read commercial DVD's and some CDRW. later they had Philips and Samsung I think. WHich could read DVD recordable disks. I bought a second Xbox on Ebay so I could use XB Media Center with regular DVD media.

BTW I recall the Xbox being bullet prood, Some Student got upset with people playing the xbox, got a gun stormed into the room in which they were playing, and shot the Xbox, which continued working with no consequence.

Don't know why so many people are quick to bash the system, which is very reliable, has better specs and features than the other systems, and only suffered from being large and heavy. But no Larger then the New PS3. No surprise there since like the Xbox the PS3 has Nvidia graphics hardware, Hard drive, DVD rom. networking and HDTV support etc, etc.

Many of which were a first on the Xbox console.

> Don't know why so many people are quick to bash the system

Very simple, it is by Microsoft. (that said, I own a Gamecube and a PS2, but not an Xbox)

Very simple, it is by Microsoft.

I'm reminded of the saying "just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not following me." Just because Microsoft has it's share of haters doesn't mean everyone ( or anything close to everyone ) who has bad things to say about their products is doing so for that reason. All three major console vendors have their fair share of fanboys and their fair share of haters. Sony surely have more ( of both ) than Microsoft, and that's probably why the XBox hasn't been a success. Not because of how many people hate it, or bash it, but because of how many people just don't really care about it. I'm a very pragmatic person and I really don't give a toss about "allegiances". I'd have bought a 360 months ago if I could have found a single game I wanted to play. About the only thing I've seen yet which vaguely interested me is that Bioware scifi RPG thingy. If it actually comes out before PS3 and/or Wii have something that interests me, I still might buy one.

I think i'll buy a PS3 just to upset some Wii fanboys here... :O)

BTW I recall the Xbox being bullet prood,
Which I'm sure is really useful if you're playing it in Iraq, but less so in sensible countries.

and only suffered from being large and heavy.
And only having 3 decent games (exclusively) released for it.

I'd have bought a 360 months ago if I could have found a single game I wanted to play.
Exactly. Roll on Crimson Skies 360, MechAssault 360 (not MechAssault 2 which blows) and Mass Effect. Ofcourse chances are Mass Effect isn't going to be good enough to warrant shelling out the bucks to buy a new console, just for one game.

Depends what games you like really. I liked quite a few. It's true that a lot got ported to the PC etc eventualy. But there were some damned good games that were exclusive to the Xbox for quite some time.

Of course a lot depends on the kinds of games you like too.

Riddick
Project gotham 1 and 2
Knights of the old republic 1
Jade Empire
Splinter Cell 1
Forza Motorsport
Fable
Burnout revenge
Amped 1 & 2
Crimzon Skies
farenheit
Enclave
Broken sword 3

Those are just a few of my favourite Xbox games I have on the shelf. Many of which were exclusive for 6 - 12 months

> Just because Microsoft has it's share of haters doesn't mean everyone ( or anything close to everyone )

I would think it is a very large percentage of MS haters myself, but for both of us that is just opinion so I'll leave it at that.

Many of which were exclusive for 6 - 12 months
I doubt most people are going to think 500USD is good value for money, for the priviledge of playing games 6 months in advance in lower resolutions, and in some cases less content (The PC version of KOTOR had an extra system you could visit).

In fact on your list, the only game I really feel I'm missing out on is Crimson Skies. All the others either a) suck or b) have better PC versions. Not worth the price of admission, IMHO.

yeah and thats most likely your taste in games. You probably like Nintendo and Mario type games. I've always been a computer gamer, not a console gamer since the early 80's. And Xbox trod the gap between the two and had the kinds of games I liked.

Most of the games listed above worked better on the Xbox than on the PC, either in looks or control.

when Sony admits this,

Linkie?

Consoles are rubbish.

Why buy one of them when a PC does everything better?

Why buy one of them when a PC does everything better?

Because PCs are wrapped around a resource-heavy OS and long boot-up times, and usually require hardware upgrades to play the latest game the way they were meant to be played?
(and that's excluding compatibility/bugs which a lot of PC developers don't bother ironing out until after release just because they can, unlike consoles of last-generation where everything was set in stone, EA being the exception because they suck)

PS. This is regarding gaming only btw, not the fact the PC can multi-task and do 100 other things.

Some games just don't end up on the PC too, otherwise I'd agree with Amon. In my case its usualy Racing games, that just don't feel right on a PC.

I'm more of an RTS, Space Sim, RPG gamer, but don't like Japanese RPG's for some reason. So the PC is naturaly going to be my system of choice.

Yeah, now I see some on eBay running for as much as $3,500 USD! Ouch, you could buy a nice plasma screen for the same price, maybe a good 60" plasma would sound far better, or two Sony VAIO Notebooks for the same price as some of these guys are selling their PS3s on eBay for.

Because PCs are wrapped around a resource-heavy OS and long boot-up times, and usually require hardware upgrades to play the latest game the way they were meant to be played?

Of course, that argument can just as easily be used against you:
- With the PC you have the option for incremental upgrades without having to wait years for the next release of the console to arrive
-With the console the software is limited by a hard barrier of what the hardware will support, while a PC game can go 'above and beyond' that for those that chose to buy a higher end video card, which simply isn't an option on the console.

Linkie?

You probably like Nintendo and Mario type games.
Actually I liked the Amiga, and Amiga style games. Too bad they don't make them anymore.

In my case its usualy Racing games, that just don't feel right on a PC.
In my case it's beat'em ups / fighting games.

- With the PC you have the option for incremental upgrades without having to wait years for the next release of the console to arrive
Except every incremential upgrade costs about as much as a new console.

I mostly like a mix out of pc games like adventures/roleplaying, some better fps, retro stuff and small games like Tetris/Mr. Driller,...

Nintendo has a few brilliant games on their consoles/handhelds but most of their stuff isn't what i would like to play - i'm just no Mario&friends fanboy. Buahh for instance there are so many horrible games around for the gba.

Secondly i would love to be able to use my computer monitor instead of the tv for playing.

And a last argument for what i'll buy is how much i'll feel ripped with a certain system.

Which leads to... ???

> - With the PC you have the option for incremental upgrades

Trouble is, doing this makes coding poorly coded and incompatibile games, on various hardware. I mean I think the only thing you can't seem to emulate properly in Windows is older versions of Windows or old games running on old hardware. I hate the thought of buying a game that will eventually expire because you will no longer be able to find the hardware (and in dos games the soundcards) to run it properly.

Plus with PCs you have the 'release game- infinite set of patches' problems instead of FINISHING the game without any bugs.

> With the console the software is limited by a hard
> barrier of what the hardware will support, while a
> PC game can go 'above and beyond' that for those
> that chose to buy a higher end video card,
> which simply isn't an option on the console.

Console hardware is efficient, static and reliable, and allows programmers to over time build effective and more efficient programming techniques to maximise the potential of the hardware. In PCs it a lottery and usually you spend more time compatibility programming than doing anything else. Not to mention running games on a bloaty OS is shockingly inefficient.
I mean imagine a console having a gb of ram and a 3Ghz processor? At times a PC is like a ferrari engine running on scalextric wheels. It's crippled and retarded before it's even turned on.

[edit] Sorry Enay, I really chewed into you here. All in good fun, right?

Console hardware is efficient, static and reliable, and allows programmers to over time build effective and more efficient programming techniques
Very true, but you went too far with this:

In PCs it a lottery and usually you spend more time compatibility programming than doing anything else.
Sure, maybe in 1994! What are you talking
about? I'm sure you've heard of DirectX, right?

I hate the thought of buying a game that will eventually expire because you will no longer be able to find the hardware (and in dos games the soundcards) to run it properly.
I'm able to play all of the games I've bought
since 1995. I have to download a hack to play
Dark Forces, but it's minor. I don't know what's
wrong with your setup, but I can play whatever I
fancy on my machine.

Plus with PCs you have the 'release game- infinite set of patches' problems instead of FINISHING the game without any bugs.
That's not the case anymore. Did you hear that
some 360 games will need patches upon release?
Same with the PS3. Do you remember Ocarina of Time?
It had some potentially crippling bugs, so they
just started manufacturing new patched cartridges.
Owners of the original cartridge were screwed.
Is that really better?

(And by the way, a hyperbole like "infinite" hurts your credibility in an argument!)

[Edit] I've got nothing against Consoles. I like 'em all. I just didn't like Enay's points and arguments.

I'm sure you've heard of DirectX, right?
Blitz3D uses DirectX yet doesn't work on TabletPC Editions of Windows XP. Using an API like DirectX does not prevent you from having compatibility issues. Take AAA games, like Rise of Nations and The Matrix. Both used DirectX and both required very specific (and different) versions of the nVidia drivers to work properly (or in some cases, at all).

I'm able to play all of the games I've bought
since 1995.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of PC games I cannot play anymore: Dune, M.A.X., The Lost Vikings, Fallout, Incubation, Panzer General 3D Assault and Knights of the Old Republic 2.

Blitz3D uses DirectX yet doesn't work on TabletPC Editions of Windows XP

And console games won't work on TabletPcs either, so they're even!

I'm not saying DirectX (or OpenGL, of course)are the end-all solutions
to compatibility issues, but they do almost all of the work for the
programmer. So what if
Both used DirectX and both required very specific (and different) versions of the nVidia drivers to work properly (or in some cases, at all).
So what? Updating my videocard drivers once every few months is a
very small effort on my part. Emptying the garbage can in my room is
more unpleasant and more effort.

well, b3d does work on a tablet when you disable advanced text services, but yeah....

This Argument Is Silly!

> Except every incremential upgrade costs about as much as a new console.

These days it is more like half the cost of a console, but the point is still true.

My biggest problem with PC games - not knowing if the game will run properly on my system. The minimum specs listed on games are getting to be more and more of a joke too. What do some of these companies consider minimum? Able to do 1 FPS?

> Plus with PCs you have the 'release game- infinite set of patches' problems

On an ominous note, that same problem is coming to consoles. The PS3 needs a 5 minute (a pittance compared to PCs) update before it can run some games. I think the Xbox has been doing the updates for awhile now too.

If it wasn't for the lack of a keyboard and mouse for game control I would have switched to consoles as my primary gaming system years ago.

I'm not saying DirectX (or OpenGL, of course)are the end-all solutions to compatibility issues, but they do almost all of the work for the programmer.
You've never actually ever used DirectX, have you?

> [edit] Sorry Enay, I really chewed into you here.

Did I miss something?

> Did you hear that some 360 games will
> need patches upon release?

It's the X-Box, so it's not surprising. It's the start of the end of reliable consoles as we know it.

PS3 has a patch that installs network play, since it wasn't finished when the system was sent for manufacturing.

At least one thing MS got right was the single unified network, rather than the 5 seperate ones sony has. SHould be interesting to see what their equivalent of live is.

I see some on eBay running for as much as $3,500 USD!

Over $10,000 : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180050827536 - but that surely can't be a legit bid.

Cheers.

the latest misstep for the stumbling electronics company

Havn't even read thru the entire first paragraph yet and I can already tell this article is trash. Washington Post = on my hit list with Gamestop and IGN. Yahoo has apparently stolen Washington Post's article.

Online upgrades of the PS3 software will be offered,

That's already above and beyond the support Sony offered for broken PS1 games on the PS2 and nullifies any problems people have with at least the popular games.

Sony Corp. had billed PlayStation 3 as compatible with the previous PlayStation machines.

The fact that people misinterpreted that as FULLY compatible is not Sony's fault. Anybody who expected full compatibility should stay away from technology completely. I have heard some people say Sony said it was 100% compatible, but I am yet to find anything other than rumours and heresy to back that up.

He declined to give a number for the games that weren't functioning, ... the problems in playing the older games are not a glitch and had been expected.

Whoever told me the number was much higher obviously knows as little as I do.

from what Sony is saying, graphics doesn't work at all (ie. blank screen), and sound not working at all (ie. no sound), and games just freeze and lockup.. a lot of games won't even boot etc..

None of that was new to the PS2 either, but those articles mention much more specific things, like music not working (whereas sfx play fine) and certain scenes in Gran Turismo freezing, not things like 'you won't see any gfx' or 'you won't hear any sound'.

At times a PC is like a ferrari engine running on scalextric wheels. It's crippled and retarded before it's even turned on.

That's funny. I had to quote it again =]

I don't know what's wrong with your setup, but I can play whatever I fancy on my machine.

I can't play Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2 multiplayer, Theme Park, Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper 1 or 2 or Renegade or on Vista... although I can cheat to get DK2 working. I can't use Win98 or ME because my hardware is -too new-.
