PS3 homebrew community

Here's a site run by a mate of mine... he's been freelance coding for commercial projects for almost 10 years (perhaps more) on every major game system released during that period. The site is also run by several other previous members of PS2 communities.

I figure if BRL (or anyone here) are considering the PS3 as a future interest (I hear tell the PS3 is somewhat akin to coding on the Miggy) then it may be a good idea to get aquainted with this place. It's been up for a month or so and it already seems pretty active.

I've thought about that before - turning the old lounge into a science lab with microscopes and all sorts of science stuff. I think it would be interesting.

Well, anyone thinking about spending that much money on a games console, needs a checkup from the neck up.

For Aussies concerned about price (I won't be getting one), I got a tip that you can import from Japan and the cost will be roughly $550 including shipping and customs fees etc... not bad considering they retail here for $999! I believe the PS3 is region free, like the PSPs, so frankly anyone living in Aus that buys local/retail is a moron ;]

Not ripping on it, but I managed to catch a look at the PS3 kiosk at a local retailer today.

It would be best to market this as an affordable(?) blu-ray player that just happens to play games... or tack-on a keyboard and launch it as a closed platform PC (Mac is popular, so it could work to have another competitor in the PC arena)

Visually, the games aren't much more impressive than XBox 360 / final generation PS-2 when they're in motion. The titles seemed marginally better than what XBox currently has.

They probably should have dropped blu-ray support out of the box, and came out at the 360's price point. With their launch price, it will be interesting to see if they can succeed where 3DO failed. We (in the U.S.) just got out of the recession. It's a little too early for a lot of people to buy expensive toys that require expensive software.

I thought that you had to pay large sums of money to sony before you where allowed to develop games for there game consoles?

I say pack a game dev kit in each and every box sold, open up sony and let us in!

Really? Really?? That would be very encouraging news, but I'd be very surprised. Particularly since they have to be hooked up to TV sets and handhelds like the region-free PSP's and Gameboys don't.

EDIT: Just googled it and apparently it's true. So this is great news.

Upon further investigation (helps now that PS3 has been released in Japan and the manual also has been published online), sort of, yes. Next-gen (uh, current gen now) games are region free. Movies are of course not and neither are PS1 and PS2 games. Backward compatibility would be my biggest reason for buying so ordering from Japan is not an option for me after all =]

Damn shame they couldn't backdate the region-free aspects to include PS1 and PS2 games. I have a big collection of PS1 and PS2 imports I'd like to play, which means I either have to keep my modded PS2 around or I have to hope there's a region-free hack at some point.

Well if you have more imports than local region copies, it would probably make sense for you to get an import PS3?

Yeah, it might. With PS1 and PS2, I always avoided buying an import because you don't have a warranty, and even if you did, you're running it off of a step-down transformer which would void the warranty anyway. New consoles of all denominations have a tendency to require muchos RMA'ing, and while I'm not one of those complaining about the price of a PS3, I'd not want to bin it after a few months and buy another.
