This game is amazing. Crap I haven't had this much fun in a long while. Have a 360? get this game. Don't have a 360? consider getting one.
Gears Of War
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Gears Of War I want it ... but my 360 fried itself and I haven't mailed it back for the recall yet! Damn this stinks! Glad to hear it's good though ;)
Yeah, so about that Unreal 3 Engine...

Meh... the pics, and fancy next-gen graphics in general don't impress me much... Still looks like the same old dirt, monsters, and crap to me. Only now rendered super high-rez and with all kinds of dumb bling.
Sure, it is a marvel.. but like the steam engine and electricity, it quickly loses it's gloss and becomes boring.

I'd like to see a POP game look like that...
I'd like to see a game -not- look like that for a change.
That would be nice too :) Wait for the new Mario game ;)
Yup - the harder they try laying on these cheesy(well a lot of them) effects the more the jaggy poly razor-sharp edges become apparent and destroy the illusion.
I was playing Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter last night, the neatest effect was when I was looking past a car on fire - the fire caused a warping/blurring of vision beyond it, it was a darn cool effect. So bring on the realism I say!
the graphics are amazing. There's no denying that. After the first couple of levels it does wear off though. But then the fun gameplay becomes much more noticeable :).

I love that game.
Tracy was playing it the other night, not sure how far she is in but she was told to "meet at the extrusion point" or something, there was a target on the floor under a petrol station- she was told to destroy a tanker. The tanker was sitting next to the petrol station...
only, silly girl, she ran to the petrol station, hid by it- got a grenade ready- at this point i remember saying "You don't want todo tha..."- she chucked a grenade at the tanker. Of course, the truck blew and then she died. She wondered why, refusing to beleive that the blown up tanker would be so realistic as to blow the petrol station up. BANG!
next time i told her to chuck the grenade before going towards the next point. Woah, i've never seen such a realistic explosion! bam.. BAMBAMMM! :)
As you can tell, I love it :)
That fire effect is an old one - it was done really well in Doom 3...though in this case the effect is worthwhile as it's not some cheesy normal-mapped poly character..I tell you the same people who raved about normal-mapped this and normal-mapped that will cringe in a few years time when they look back, like those outrageous flared trousers in the 60's it will become a bit of an embarrassment. Gritty bumps and smart straight edges on the same object just look pathetic in my opinion, especially on an animated object.

I never played Doom3, maybe now that it is in the bargain bin though.
The best part about the fire effect though (in GRAW) was that I was in the middle of trying to get a shot at a bad guy on the other side of the car, and that fire didn't make it impossible but it made it harder.
This game is tempting me to get a physics card - but in the end I'm too cheap...

Ghost Recon is really cool if you have a PhysX card.
Shots liks this do look really nice, but it's not the revolution all the UE3 hype suggested:

Screen shots can't really capture how a game looks. I think that we all know that having been part of developing games our selves. This is a game that should not be missed. The gameplay is what really hits the mark for me. It's very well paced and one of the first boss fights almost made me piss myself (not really scary but ultimately new and suspensful!). If anyone else has this game let me know. I need to renew my live account but when I do we can play on live. Blitzer to Blitzer!
I don't really care for the character design in the game, mainly the big bulky warhammeresque suits and pumped up physiques, which make it hard to engage with the characters. Hopefully its more than a average shooter gameplay wise since thats whats really missing from most FPS games these days.

although it's a 3rd person shooter, but yea they are similar enough to basically consider them just a '3d shooter'.
I remember heat refraction is other games... like Metroid Prime... it is nothing new.

I have as well, but for some reason this one really stuck out as being superior to the other times I saw it, I've no idea why though.
