power blackout

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/power blackout

Hi,

anyone else who got hit by the power blackout on saturday? It killed my dsl-modem. It will be interesting to see if they will cover my costs. :O/

Regards,

taumel

* not, even tho the region seemed to have been hit as well.

But a blackout actually killed that modem??
I guess I must feel happy I wasn't hit, my PC is on 24/7.. or are PC's more sturdy than modems?
anyway

Yep after the waiting was over the Pcs were booted themselves and the modem was dead - no more power.

i was hit too - but i have a lightning protection system installed in front of my valuable hardware.

Can you tell me which kind do you have (product, price)?

I remember an article in the c't over a year ago were they wrote that most of them were pretty useless and those which were good simply were too expensive for that it almost never happens here.

My computer got fried once a while back and I ended up losing everything. It wasn't a black out but one of those "brown - out" when the power doesn't quite go out, but shift to half-power. The surge protector didnt stop it and it caused one hell of a smoke show in my room.

Since then I got myself one of those high powered UPS system (except I got a double-unit which means double the power life): http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0210223

Works great so far, and I'm actually able to power my TV and microwave also. Only had to use it once since I got it, but I still feel more secure with it around.

Oh right... thanks for reminding me!

I just remembered I have all the files for a web site relying on the survival of a very old computer plugged straight into a wall.
I should fix that...

i have an APC Back-UPS ES 700VA 230V. not that expensive. at least cheaper than new hardware ;)

Okay thanks to you both.
