I'm trying to get some useful poll information about how many people actually play tutorials in games. How many people when they first start up a game play the tutorial (assuming it's a seperate optional tutorial and not integrated into the first level of the game)? How many just dive in and never glance at the tutorial?
Tutorials
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Tutorials I'll usually play a tutorial level part of the way through, get bored and likely never play the game again. Unless it is a game that you can just jump right in and play I will usually not bother with it. Although I wouldn't consider myself much of a 'gamer' - I only play old 80s/90s arcade games on those compilation CDs for Xbox.
I play the tutorials more than the games usually... But that's just me.
I only usually resort to the tutorial if
1) I get stuck somewhere.
2) Am forced to complete it to play the game.

I always play tutorial.
I just don't want to ruin the actual gameexperience when starting up with the "real" game just because I don't know all the features or keysettings...

Depends on my expectations for the game. If it's really high then I'll give the game a chance and play through the tutorials. If I'm not too much into the game then I'll just hop in and see what I can figure out without a tutorial. Also if the game is really obscure and/or original I'll go through the tutorial so I know what I need to do.
Good feedback. Thanks guys :)
I usually never do the first time I play a game. Its only when I'm intrigue AND can't figure what I'm doing is when I jump through the tutorial quickly. Otherwise, I would expect the game to be kinda self-explanatory and intuitive (like FPSs should have the usual w,s,a,d for movements...etc, and 2d shooters/platform uses the arrow keys to move..etc, and casual games should make heavy use the mouse...). RPGs/adventure types games i may want to go through a tutorial first though....
This depends very much on the game. I usually ignore the tutorials if I think they're not necessary. I'll then look up anything I want to know as I play. But I definately did the tutorial when I booted up SWAT 4 for the first time. but that's because:
1)In order to have fun playing the game, I had to learn and understand some complex systems first.
2) The tutorial wasn't implemented into the gameplay. (Oblivion and the Halflife games do this well and I believe it's the best way.)
Imho.

I usually dive in and ignore the tutorial unless the game is complex. A big plus is any tutorial that remembers where you left off, and which allows ignoring or skipping past each spot. The worst tuturial was on a Flight Sim I recently bought - there was no way to speed it along so I could get past takeoff and get into setting up for a ground attack run.
