Alan Wake shown at IDF Fall 2006
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Alan Wake shown at IDF Fall 2006 Oh my god!!!
Best I get that Alienware system.

Looks nice.
I bet the ground is still not given nearly enough attention, though.
...And I bet all of those surfaces still appear horrible up close.
The physics are a fine start, and the lighting is excellent though :)
Those YouTube comments are almost humorously lame... but not quite lame enough to get away with it.
That mess is considered a social networking site?!

Is that really a game? Looks pretty impressive if it is.
Sure, it looks gorgeous. But with all those man-hours in volumetric lights, physics and others things to make a stunning environment, the immersion drops into the ground once Alan Wake starts to walk. The animation is bad.
I think they can fix that easily. What really impresses me about it is the realistic ambience. The sunny scenes show very well how to use radiosity in games. It should be a lesson for us since this is possible even in Blitz3D, when the lightmapping is done carefully.
Looks pretty Rad.
I'm guessing that's running on a quad core intel since they showed this at the quad core intel show recently, probably a top end 8800 graphics card or xtx1950 ati card

I'm not guess as the guy said that in the video. ah, you see that's where I fall down watching videos at work without any sound :-)
Good grief! That's awesome!

Have to agree about the walking, seems to animate faster than he's actually walking. Apart from that quite stunning.
As a train sims fan I'd like to see that 3D engine used in a train sim. It's so lifelike it's scary.

I'm not usually too impressed by gratuitous eyecandy but, fook, that's nice! :)
In parts I thought it was just a little *too* photorealistic, and not quite enough of a style about it, but that was mainly from the long overhead views which are not really fair to judge, because you'll never see those views in game.
The tornado was sweet. That can't be easy to do. Looking at my poor Dual Core PC and my 6600GT, I'm thinking I'll stick with the XBox360 version though. I've a feeling my poor PC would get an asthma attack just trying to load it.

Of course it's a game. Been waiting a long time for this as it actually seems to bring in some thrillerstyle into the game.
Though the trailers a year ago did show more of the game meanwhile this one shows only the engine.

Good question. If I where a betting man I'd wager no.
I bet it's 100X more game than DOOM3 ever was... for starters you don't have fullbodyarmoredredneckswithridiculousguns and I think that you don't even have to shoot aliens in this game. To me the concept and setting looks very good and a definitely needed change from "DOOM-clones" in the FPS genre.
meh. Give me dos ultima 6 any-day. It is all about gameplay, which this shows nothing of. Which leads me to believe it was an afterthought after things like 'concept' and 'graphics'
like
"Oh snap, we need gameplay too... lets just slap something together."

And 7 Part II Serpent Isle, still rocks. Check out Exhult if you haven't already. I bet it's 100X more game than DOOM3 ever was.
Well 100 x 0 is still 0... I think Doom3 deserves a floating point number, not 0.
Combine this with that new procedural animation system and boom you got some killer engine on yer hands!
I think Doom3 deserves a floating point number, not 0.
It'll have to be a double precision float then because a single precision float doesn't have enough precision to store the floating point number I'd give it.
Oh c'mon. If you are honest guys. DOOM3 as a game maybe wasn't that innovative, Ill give you that, but you must agree that the techniques behind the game was innovative and that ID Software never make good games but they always pushes the techniques further on. Then other companies makes good games of it.
