Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/nwn2

NWN2 comes out this week. Who's on it? I am for one :).

I preordered the chaotic evil CE.. :D

Though I'm not sure if the game is really that good.

Any reviews so far?

Pre-ordered The CE version also. I didn't play the first version. But i hope as a former WoW addict that it eases the pain a bit.

From what i've seen it is a good solid game.

If it's even close to as good as the first, it will rock. Persistent servers = awesome :).

I'll go with Sam&Max this time and maybe buy it when it's budget and available for osx.

I'm going to buy it.

Actually, quite a bit of stuff I want to buy.

puki needs more models.

NeverWinter Nights 2?

No. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. KOTOR2 was the last game I bought that was developed by Obsidian.

In fact it's amazing that a developer who refuses to fix bugs they introduced, leaving it up to the 'community' (as it where) is still in business. It says a lot about a company when they're less competent at fixing their own bugs than their users.

Does it have a single player element or is it online only?

I will wait to see what it works on TBH and what bugs it has

Not me; not right away, for sure. All my spare money is going towards a Wii + games and a much needed new HDD.

Grey: both

Thanks markd.

Grey: both

Single player online Only?

Heh sorry. It's single player campaign/multiplayer. In the original you could DM your own persistent server and that carried over it seems. I hope the toolset is decent.

Single player online Only?
Yeah when he said both my pedant mode nearly wrote something, but I resisted.

NWN2 is like the old one with the difference that you have a small party again and they put quite some effort into making those party NPC more alive. They talk a lot and stuff like this. The game here got tested more or less in the same region as oblivion and gothic3. Less graphics but better story then the others.

In the end it's nothing amazing and more another average roleplaying game with some ups and downs. My time isn't worth investing it at it at the moment.

Hopefully Dragon Age will come with some better ideas or a new Bard's Tale.

But if you have the time and enjoyed the old one i guess it's fun to play...

So come on, anyone got this yet? Played it? Any good? Is it a bit less buggy than Gothic 3 and Dark Messiah?

I hope in NWN2 you can control you party members cos in the first one you couldn't. This was dumb cos if you were a wizard, you couldn't get you Giant Cat or thief to open the door to a room full of monsters, you had to do it yourself then run away. This was totally unrealstic and crap after say Baldurs Gate.

It was awesome what poeple did with Vampires and NWN on some Servers.
If NWN2 has nice mod tools like they say, it will be likely more fun then any mmorpg out there.
Again a time killer i have to buy.

NWN2 was done with an Engine called "Aurora"....scares me a little:D

No the engine was based on Aurora (NWN1) and it's called Electron now.

I'll be picking it up today so stay tuned for an in-depth review this weekend.

Welcome to valve, welcome to EA, welcome to most big developers

You should blame the publishers who impose unrealistic release dates on developers and then refuse to fund post-release bug fixes.

Remember this little gem?

http://ea-spouse.livejournal.com/274.html

I got 10 minutes to mess with it last night. The camera system sucks. A LOT. More to follow :).

I am installing now - it is also installing a patch - so if anyone already has it installed, you may want to check for the patch.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the media.

Hopefully, it will be as simple as NWN 1.

Ooh, the toolset is there - so the answer is free animated character/monster meshes, buildings, items, foliage, sounds, music, textures, etc for "puki".

Paw raised aloft - I salute myself at my haul.

Time to get a bigger media hard-drive.

The patch is borked.

It takes ages to download, then when it installs (which takes ages), it stops at 51%.

I tried it twice now:
Patching File Data\NWN2_Materials.zip
Failure Opening New File
Get the critical rebuild.
http://nwn2.obsidian.net/support/patch_english.html#crit
The patch has been aborted

This is most unfair after all the trouble I had with Steam.

Played it for 4-5 hours now. It's a good game made by a mediocre team. More a game for D&D enthusiasts then for the common market. Even though it's PR'ed too the death on places like GameSpy.

The UI is inconsistent and uninformative due to a bad design and unresponsive due to a terrible fps, even on a high end system i have. The world is not continuous like WOW but divided in "scenes" and interiors. The scenes are pretty small in scale...
Graphic design is a bit uncreative and predictable, and dare i say "programmers art"?

Well notz, as an ex NWN 1 online addict, I've still got it on my christmas list. Can you be more specific about the UI's problems ? Have you posted your concerns on any other forums ?

Has anyone managed to update it to the latest version?

I've yet to play it.

I can't believe I tried installing this 2 hours ago - I just finished defragging my games drive, just in case that helps the patch to install. However, I fail to see how it would.

If it fails again, I'm stuck between uninstalling and reinstalling and not patching or carrying on with a game that is 50% patched. Either option may lead to problems later in the game.

Mine patched without a hitch, albiet very slowly. Still haven't been able to bring myself to log back in because of that horrid camera. Maybe it's just me.

Um,

The degrag worked - is is now installing the patch.

Interesting.

I've made a note of this and will study it later.

You can only choose a character if you click on his portrait..wth?

Adjusting the camera every second is quiet exhausting..

Party members AI is a deadly joke. Turn it off or whatch a Dwarf attacking everything on sight while he ignores any discovered traps.

They havent mentioned in the manual that F12=Quick Save...grrr

Anyway, since KOTOR1 i havent enjoyed a RPG so much.
I am happy that i have bought it.

@Takuan, page 9 in the manual :)

Camera is either too slow or too fast.

I like it so far, and the graphics is subtle and good, story is above par but voice acting leaves room for improvement.

The CE box includes NWN1 with two expansions, a large mountain troll miniature, a CE ring, map and a art booklet.
Nice value in there.

O yeah, the stupid dwarf is doing a "Leroy Jenkins" on me all the time.

Last night I arrived at Neverwinter city docks. They should shoot the designer on the spot. The whole place feels like a
somebody took the toolkit and randomly put some house models there and populated the place with pod people.
If i envision a fantasy/medieval like town, I think about small meandering streets and alleys, not 20 meter wide lanes.
Almost all the house are closed, no shops, no "Ye Olde Bakery" signs.
The whole graphics design, except some interiors, lacks soul.

The problems with the UI are twofold. The mouse button assignments are not consistent.
Sometimes you have to click the left button to show some statistics about spells, feats etc. and sometimes you have
to press(and hold??) the right button to get a popup from where you can examine stuff. Getting stats and comparing spells,
weapons and other materials get's very cumbersome. Especially when you are, like me, a D&D noob.
Which brings me to the other problem. I am new to the D&D system, and frankly not too much interested in it's inner workings.
Evaluating even the simplest item is quite difficult for me. So why not a simple and advanced mode in the interface?

Despite all my gripes, i am still playing the wretched beast. Which says something about the story and the gameplay.

Mmm, yes - I agree about the problems with the camera - certainly is a bit bent.

The game is okay though - I do find the faffing with the clicking a bit bent too.

However, the most disgraceful thing is I can't Alt-Tab to Destktop without the game dying. This is an utter disgrace in a modern world. I needed to Alt-Tab so that I can use my cheat system to give me millions in gold - now I'll have to do it the manual way - shocking and disgraceful - cheating should be easy, not totally bent.

Not yet tried to extract any of the game media - might do that Wednesday.

Aha, the game has an option to put it into Windowed mode (it defaults to full screen). So, with Window mode enabled, the game will crumble into submission.

My dominance continues.

I think it's safe to say they've crammed too much into the UI. Also my friend told me if you keep the camera up high NWN1 style, it's much better...but I like chasecams (EQ, Oblivion, daoc, etc).

Oblivion's chasecam is spot on. Hell I can make a chasecam in B3D better than NWN2's. They should all hang their heads in shame.

ALERT

There is another patch - I just noted that the updater was saying the current version is 1.02

Start patching.

Jesus Christ!!!

I did the update to 1.02 and it instantly indicated that there is a 1.03

What the hell is going on here - what's with the incremental patching?

By the Gods! Hope you packed a lunch.

Can someone give me a hint on what character to play?

I like wizards/warlocks but can't decide what to pic.

I love my Warlock...has less spells but can call them more often.

If i get a good weapon on a server visited by my local character, will i still have that weapon in the single player campaign?

Think so.

SO can you gimme some good warlock start attributes and feats?

This game sucks - the inventory system is dire, dire, dire.

You have to right click everything to bring up a sub menu, then select 'Examine' just to find out what it is. This sucks big time. You have to do this when you buy things from merchants just to find out the items stats to work out if you want to buy it or not.

This is sucks - completely and utterly. A retarded worm knows that this system sucks.

Some games will let you highlight everything you want to buy/sell and do it all in one - this heap of direness makes you do everything one at a time.

They should employ a retarded worm to help them when they start NWN 3.

What the hell is going on here - what's with the incremental patching?
It's Obsidian. I wouldn't patch if I where you - unless the game actually crashes.

Cant help much, i dont know the names of spells/skills in english. Charisma and constitution seems most important and i found the skill to use magic items quiet handy. Concentration seems important too.
Push at least one skill to convince poeple (bluff?).
In NWN2 its often possible to talk you out of a bad situation (personaly i prefer a nice fire).
In Planescape, BG and DDO it was always a good idea to have area of effect spells like that "web" or "sleep" thing. So I concentrated on using missile weapons to shoot them while they arent able to move.
Theres a magic shield to protect you from magic pojectiles.
Beside of that, i take every spell that burns or makes boom:D
Think it realy depends on your group. You can exchange your members later.

True, you cant explain the GUI with "we had not enough time to iron things out".
You can read in game that they have painted GUI's designers head on a wall and they painted tears on it.
Then they called that painting "Tears of GUILator (or similar)".
Strange sense of humor Obsidian has..oO

I'm also German, Takuan, though I have selected "English" when installing the game and I'm very happy that the game actually is in English now (voice and texts). This makes a good practise... :D

Attention.

There is another patch - I just Larged it.

Also, last night I unpacked the geometry and textures.

To be honest, it isn't that good compared to the Oblivion stuff.

My toolset will not startup anyideas how to fixit guys
it showup in processes then just stops :(

Toolset works fine here.
Whats going on? Autopatcher is now on 1.05.
What game Version do you have? I am still on V1.01
