The last proof (final) we ordered took about 9 days to arrive back in the letterbox. I would imagine that once people start purchasing them the printer (lulu.com) will be sending them out a little quicker.

Which B3D version is the manual based on? I have the manual from the boxed version way back when it was first released via IDIGICON.

It mentions some 1.97 specific abilities in the LoadTexture description for instance, and all new commands added uptil now are documented including Object and Handle, finally official!

The manual is similar in content to the original, however its in a bigger sized perfect bound book with a lot of the reference section significantly revised and hopefully a little easier to read.

Seasoned blitzers may not get much out of purchasing the new manual, however newcomers to Blitz3D (which there continues to be a steady stream) will hopefully find the book a helpful companion.

The Blitz3D manual comparisons:

Old one (2001) - 322 pages - dimensions w 6.96" x h 8.62"

Conclusion:
The new one is clearly bigger all over.

When mine turns up I'll check the weight too.

Out of interest - exactly who has bought the manual?

For it to have moved 12,611 places in the rankings it must have shifted a few copies. Almost like thousands of Blitzers with a non-legal Blitz3D are buying it (considering it is cheap).

As long as you don't go past 16K you are legally free to use the Blitz3D demo as long as you want.

Certainly info has been added. However, I note info has been removed. The missing info may be stuff that was deemed obsolete - or it may be info that should still be there - here is an example of info that was in the orginal manual that is not in the new manual:

Now - that info is in the online manual on this site but isn't in the new manual.

The "Paul Gerfen" tutorials are in the new manual - which is good. Appears to be some new beginner stuff there too.

A very nice touch is that the commands have a related commands section that names the related command and also tells you what page of the manual to find it. So, it is a bit like a manual version of the online help (where you can click on a related command to view it).

In terms of beginners - the 'bareness' of the original manual is still there though - ie Collision commands - it is the same info that is in the original manual.

However, the 'Collisions' section begins with 'Collisions src_type, dest_type, method, response' which the original manual did not. As a bonus it mentions where to use 'CountCollisions' and gives advice on the calling of 'Collisons'.

I've only had a quick look but it looks good to me.

Also, the new manual is more of a proper book. The original manual was the old ring-bound type. Mine has lasted 5 years with just the Index pages falling out.

There is certainly a more 'quality' feel to the new manual.

Bare in mind that it is also bigger than the old manual and is a lot heavier. I've yet to weigh it for comparision, but I have noted the stats previously:

With regard to the 'Color' command, the manual gives the user parameters for 8 colours - this is a nice touch for the beginner.

If you want to know what the 8 colors are (and their parameters), then you will have to buy the manual.


Another interesting chappie is 'LoadImage' - whilst info has been taken out from the original manual (that text was pure padding), new information has been added that is exciting. I shan't discuss this here. However, if you want to see what you are missing then I think you should buy the Brand new Blitz3D Programming Manual:

Technically, we've gained 10 places from a month ago - but it has been fluctuating slightly for a while.

Could be that we have saturated sales and won't see it climbing much any more. However, 4 months ago the sales rank was 20,471 - so, making it up to 588 was a monumental achievement. It's possible it might have made it slightly higher than 588, but 588 was the highest I spotted.

I just tried to order it and it didn't work. It said there wasn't any available shipping method.

I got my copy today. Came pretty fast I thought. It's ok, looks like a printed version of what you get in the b3d help.

Btw, the lulu site told me just after submitting my order some message about my credit card being refused but when I refreshed the page it changed it's mind and told me everything was ok.

Also, I wasn't going to get it until I read this comment, then I got curious. Object and Handle, hehe. Can you get this with the latest b3d docs now, or just in the book?
