Some music

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Some music

I'm currently trying to get to grips with Fruity-Loops and am working on this track. Any critique would be greatly appreciated from any game musicians or devs here.

If you're asking game musicians then I *estimate* that your intentions for this tune -apart from the FL tryout sessions- are 'gamemusic'. In order to say something about it we'd need to know what kinda game/setting you had in mind.

(please don't say 'RPG with evil dragons, a hero and a princess' :D)

I was thinking fast-paced turrican-esque jump 'n run shoot-em-up.

The middle bits could use some more work, some places really are annoying, rather than just intentionally dischordant.

How long did this take you to write?

The drums are a bit 'wrong'. I'm not much against synths (tho the arp/chip'ness may go, if you ask me), but the drums really don't match the rest of the sound.

I think it's not 100% suitable for games tho, not so much regarding its composition (which is not highly spectacular, but it could work in some situations), but mainly regarding sounddesign/arranging/mix. The tune could benefit greatly from more layers, not just things like (synth-)strings, but also noises 'n soundscapes.

It's like having a classic/retro arcade platformgame like Sonic. You'd prefer the background to dissolve into one color (darkblue orso), much like having fog. This will make the frontlayer standout. Additionally you'd want things a bit blurry, which again brings forward the clean 'n crisp frontlayer. So when it comes to anything 'background'ish, it's suggested to have things flat, fuzzy and blurry. This music however is mixed/produced/arranged as if it were the 'frontlayer' so to say. With that, the music grabs the attention and is thus less suitable for background music. Adding sound-layers makes the music more fuzzy/blurry.

Make it the title music?

Loved it. Thought it was great. I've been playing guitar since I was 6, and always had a thing for music. Weather this has a location for a game or not, the song 'itself' sounds great. Keep up the good work.

ps, Ive been trying to download fruityloops for a week and the page is garbled. Is the site working correctly?

Sorry guys forgot about this thread. Thanks for the feedback.

@CS TBL
All good advice, though I'm not particulary looking for feedback with regard to the piece in any particular context. If I were to use the track (which I probably won't as my only project is a puzzle game) as Grey Alien suggested it would be for a title screen,sequence or credits.

The use of synth, arpeggio and general chippyness is probably due to the fact I haven't touched any music software for years, the last being an Amiga mod tracker.

I hear what you're saying about the drums, it doesn't help that I reapeat the same 1 bar sequence through the track either. I do intend to change them though.

@DampeS8N
Could you elaborate on anoying? In particular is it the effects I have used,particular synth sound or am I just plain tone deaf. I am an Autechre fan so this is a possiblity :)

@Trooper Dave
Cheers matey! The site's working here. I've been having probs downloading sample packs 'n things other the last week so its posible it was playing up. Have you purchased it yet?

I dislike the start (first 32 seconds), after that I think it's really cool!

a new retro 64 tune :)

i like it.

God! That beginnings annoying! Just make the beginning shorter then it's great title music.
