Time Machine Spam

Is anyone else starting to get spam that seems to have come from like 2002 or 2004? etc. It's really annoying because when you have your 1 or 2 mails still left to read and they're nowhere to be seen, it's annoying having to find them or list your inbox in unread mode so they display.

I also keep getting the same spam from stocks and shares, it never gets filtered out, it always comes to my inbox and every single time it's from a different e-mail address, seems like it's getting difficult to block spam these days.

Im getting the same thing, as so to speak. I believe its one in the same with my worm (topic that is)

Funny. I've been using the same hotmail account for years now and the times I have received a spam email on it can be counted on 2 hands.

Also, if you can't find your emails in your inbox, it may be time to do something about your organization of it. Throw stuff away after you read it. If you really must save some of them, then make directories for specific types of messagesin which you store them in, immediatly after they are read. My inbox never contains more than 5 messages.

Also start wondering why you would receive all that crap. You won't get all of this enless someone has gotten your address through some obscure signup form. Don't use this adress to sign up to all the porn sites or whatever else it is your doing. I only use it for forums and stuff that I really want to be involved in.

If it's a registration for some software demo I want to try or whatever else that isn't really important, I use an address specifically meant to receive all the Spam crap out there.

So Jim, you have yet to have problem? Good for you! I wish I was that lucky. I also do the extra folder thing to seperate good from bad. But because I have ruined my original e-mail, I have 3 accounts going. All for their own reasons.

Ive had that on things that arent spam. The inbox says unread, and you have to back like 2thirds of the achive to find something. And its been things that I would have expected at the date it said it was sent, but not two years later (or whatever) when it arrives.

Its happend maybe a score times when they are a week late, and maybe 4-5 times when its been a lot longer

You don't have to manually look through pages of old archive (like I did at first) Just sort your inbox by unread order and up it pops, still it's annoying having to click that one extra time to get rid of it.

I got an email today from a woman called Susan Wilson, she attached a file, and told me 'my requested data was in unicode format'

Flagged by email virus scanner, deleted, but then, 16-bit character encoding is REALLY important, so it must of been something I should of tried! :P

Spam will never end. I'm getting the old .gif spam now with the writing as a gif image. It's about stocks & Shares and how It would be in my best interests to invest.

The only thing I'll invest in is extra more secure spam blockers.

That stocks and shares one, the fonts comes in various colours doesn't it? I get that all the time.

Apparently spamassassin now comes with an OCR plugin that can recognize those text-in-images type spams.

pity you can't block spam with .GIF attachments... I mean... how many people send .GIFs???

Why not?

Depending on your email program, you can create a filtering rule that does just that...

You'll always have a line containing filename="<something>.gif" If your rules support wildcards or regular expressions it's a piece of cake to block those. If not, you can search for both the filename=" and the .gif" seperately, but risk some false positives.

oh yeah... then I could also filter out subjects containing "<something>gra" too??? Hmmm if that works I only have to worry about people sending me email about Niagra Falls... Which probably can't happen anyway!

It's amazing what you can filter on if you can use regular expressions... wildcards, exclusions, various spellings, etc... Unfortunately very uncommon on the client side...

Until recently I was using PopTray (nice and free), but now even with the latest download installed if it tries to connect it gets a 'socket error' and fails.

Since I'm now getting 60-100 spams a day I'd be interested to know what spam-blocking people are using to hold this crap at bay.

Hmmm "<something>GRA" does not seem to work... Is there a way to apply WILDCARDS in OUTLOOK 2003??? Does anyone know?

It wasn't meant to be literally "<something>GRA" if I'm not mistaken. Wildcards I'd imagine would be the normal ones like "*". Try "*gra".

will do... I didn't have time to look up wildcards in Outlook help to see if they were supported. Somehow it seems it cannot be that easy! :)

well it does not matter to the spammer. I suspect there was a HTML component in that email. When it was opened it contacted the DL and the spammer had your address as valid.

Now it gets sold...

OR

There is something more sinester... perhaps the sequence of emails loads a tiny trojan one byte at a time...

It is all a big plot!
