"My Computer" woes

Hi all,

I'm working on my friends computer right now and just discovered something very annoying. Maybe someone has encountered this before and can help?

Just installed windows 2000, upgraded to sp 4.

Everything runs fine, except when you try to browse "My Computer". Then it just hangs with an hourglass cursor.

I noticed this when installing XnView, it would lock up as soon as I started it. Uninstalled it, and tried Irfanview instead. It would lock when I used the open file dialog.

Makes sense now, cuz their file dialogs or windows would default to "My computer"( this is how I narrowed it down ).

If I open "my computer" directly, same thing. Any other folder works fine. I can move/copy/create between the desktop and any folder. So it is "my computer"

Any clues on what this might be or how to fix it? I thought maybe it could be something with the drives since "my computer" looks at them, but they all seem to work. And I don't have any hardware conflicts showing up.

Smells strongly like a hardware issue.

I agree. Easiest thing to try first would be to disconnect all optical drives and any secondary/tertiary hard drives and see if that makes any difference. Printers and network devices show up in my computer too, so I would pull those too if the drives don't work.

I know some software such as cd emulators and cd burning software sit themselves in My Computer, but I'm guessing you haven't got that far yet?

Not to familiar with the windows 2000. But if anthing like the XP, do you have safe mode? If you do, try running it again in safe mode and see if it works there.

Eject discs. (cds and floppies)

Its probably trying to seek the floppy drive which is not there. If you leave it for a minute or two it should finally open up. Best thing to do is disable Floppy controller in BIOS or connect/configure the floppy drive properly.
