OpenGL Drivers

As I seem to have tons of problems with the NVidia drivers I am quite happy to stick with the WindowsXP default one for my graphics card however, although everything else runs fine OpenGL software sucks, especially BMax.

What I really want to know is whether it is advisable\possible to download seperate OpenGL drivers instead of me having to install the NVidia ones that include OpenGL.

BlitzMax using OpenGL runs a lot faster under the ATI card I had, and the Nvidia card I now have.

You can't get separate GL drivers. An OpenGL driver, by definition, has to know how to speak directly with the 3D hardware in order to implement the OpenGL API.

If you seriously cannot get along with the nVidia drivers then, apart from me thinking that something is wrong with your PC for them not to work, I think you should investigate some OpenGL drivers that just wrap and translate to Direct3D.

Speeds will suck, and I bet you'll see bugs, but it may be worth a try.

Try using a nVidia driver cleaner application. It should remove any trace of what-evers left over/causing you problems in your previous installations. You could also try alternately packaged drivers from Guru3D. These usually implement fixes and whatnot. Another thing to check is you card actually supported by the drivers, in the case of an older card (GF2 or something) you may need non forceware drivers.

Firstly, I didn`t mean that BMax sucks, in fact I love it. I just meant OpenGL software in general, such as BMax runs poorly because I haven`t the required drivers. Hope that clears that up.

My card, a Geforce 4 Ti4600 although old is still more than capable for what I use it for and is supposed to be supported by all the latest NVidia drivers, however I always get nasty crashes when using them. I have only just reinstalled XP (because of said crashes) and haven`t had any of the problems as I haven`t reinstalled the drivers so they are obviously the problem. The problem I now have is do I really want to risk installing the drivers again just for BMax if it makes my system unstable?

Ti could be on its way out then. I had a 4200 that was just holding on and anything above Disabled Hardware Acceleration would screw it up. Worked fine on the Windows drivers (which are like the equivalent of nvidia 34.90 or somethin')

Try using a much much older driver set. See if it helps.
