Ubuntu 6.10 Released
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Ubuntu 6.10 Released I had so much fun with the Edgy betas that I am now determined to put my computer on the brink of destruction with the Feisty alphas ASAP! :P
One notable thing about this release for me: It has now completely replaced Windows on my lesser computer.
Most of the changes are under the hood; the desktop environment is now much faster, breathing new life into any old computers :)
There are a few nice aesthetic changes, though, and some great software. (Eg: The new Add/Remove programs thing is very user friendly and well organized, and it includes a thing called popularity-contest which ranks programs based on how often they are installed as reported by willing computers who have installed the reporting software).
Lots of the stuff is just pre installed software that you normally wouldn't look for unless they put it there for you.
-Tomboy is wonderful. I have yet to find an actual use for it, but the possibilities of a Wiki style desktop note-taking application seem endless. Too bad it seems I can't yet share notes with other users or dump Tomboy's stuff onto an actual wiki Web site, but it's a good start.
-For laptop users, there is a ridiculously useful battery meter (not sure if it's pre installed or in the package repos, though) which will keep a graph of your charge and remember every time you recharge it. This way, it can tell you how your battery has degraded over the years in terms of how much life it has on a full charge.
-Boot times have been chopped in half :)

The time is fast approaching when I relegate Windows on my main PC to the noisy removable 20GB HD I've got installed. There's still a few things Windows has that Ubuntu/Linux does not. Perhaps I'll install Wine though, to get them working...
