old DOS game - expanded ram?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/old DOS game - expanded ram?

I recently dug up an old DOS game called "Scooter's Magic Castle". A few months back I tried to get it running right but failed. It runs and plays, but the sound doesn't work without using VDMS (which makes beeps come out of computer instead of sounds coming out of my speakers).

There's a seperate "launcher" program called EA Kids Theater which came on the disc. The sounds works perfectly for it, but when I try to launch SMC from there it doesn't work.

Basicly, it all comes down to this one error. Please take note that I already tried going to the .exe's property menu and giving it access to extended ram (which did nothing). Anyway, here it is:

Sorry, not enough expanded memory to utilize Digital Sound effects for Scooters Magic Castle. You need at least 2 megs of Expanded ram to hear the digital sound. Please consult your DOS manual.

If I could get this to finally work, I would be extremely happy.

Thanks!

i remember i got alone in the dark trilogy a few years ago. it was 1,2 and 3. the first one only worked in win 3.11. The second had no sound in 98 and was for win95 and the third worked in 98. Maybe this game is written for 95. what os have you?

In the old days you would set it by using the emm386 memory manager

(config.sys)
dos=high,umb
device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe RAM
Not sure what you would do in Windows today to achieve the same thing. Try looking into DosBox, I'm sure you can set EMS from there.

If you have a diskdrive, maybe you can make a Dos Bootfloppy

yeah... you really need to play it in dos itself... playing dos in windows.. especially on newer hardwear and in XP or even 98 causes ISSUES!

get dos box

remember QEMM? :)

I remember trying to get it working with Dos Box too, although I've re-formatted since then so I'll try again. How can I assign the .exe 2 megs of expanded ram with Dos Box?

Thanks again guys.

you can set all the settings for it in the .conf file.

Heh, I still remember the days when you had to tweak the EMS and XMS memories in order to play different games. But Dos Box is awesome. I never even had to change any memory settings to play any of the old stuff here : http://www.abandonia.com/index2.php?country=en

How do I change the expanded ram in the .conf file? There's nothing related to RAM in it..

in the [dos] section of the conf file, change xms to false and ems to true. xms is "extended" and ems is "expanded". Dumb hey. I used to be hired by people to get games workint for their kids, so I made these boot disks with multiple configs on them inc. mouse/no mouse/cd-rom/no cdrom/sound/no-sound etc. Years ago I was really enjoying playing Ultimate VII Part II - Serpent Isle which was really kooky with it's RAM requirements, then I upgraded to an SBLive soundcard and it didn't work cos the soundblaster driver was too big! Anyway over the years I kept trying to get it to work and failed then about 2 years ago got DOSbox and it finally worked again and I completed the game - lush! I was so happy.

God....don't remind me....of all the times I had to reboot my PC with my CD-ROM drivers disabled just so I could play a few specific games...
(damn you Betrayal of Krondor!)

I also found DOS-BOX a blessing, only prob is, half my old floppy's from the days are either missing, or became corrupted due to age...

Didn't work. Must be something with the game =/

there's another setting higher up which is the amount of memory and mine was set to 16.

if i remember right you had to setup the card settings as well in order to get the sound to work. something like SET BLASTER... probably wont help but i found this with some searching:
