Got some art direction!
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Got some art direction!
I did a google on the top 10 grossing movies of all time. It seems the world is definitely in tune with fantasy flicks. So I'm going with that. It's not a major influence on the game but it's just to give it some pretty stuff to look at while you play. The heart of the game is the puzzle mechanics. I'm keeping that top priority.
But, I'd like some opinions to make sure my art is acceptable. Here's a tile I've created for the game. Any input on it is appreciated.

Btw, this is my own creation and my property so please do not use it yada yada.
It is very dark.. and colorless. I assume that it won't always be like that...
If it was, I would consider making them lighter. Maybe variations in color too. Otherwise I like it. It is smooth, well AAed, and slick.
I would use this without hesitation if it fit something I was doing. I mean that in a good way... not a "I'm gonna steal your work" way.
It's hard t judge anything based on one tiny tile. I may look great when seen on screen together with everything else - or it may not.
Dark, yes, colorless, yes... but if you're after Darkwatch style it might be just what the doctor ordered.
Don't judge a pie based only on the cherry.. :P Just create the game and tweak brightness/colors afterwards.
I was working on the assuption that this is a playing tile in a puzzle game... based on everything else Chroma has said about the game.
If this is a moveable piece, it is then the avatar. and as such, it should stand out... this feels like a wall, unmoveable, because it is dark...
Only chroma knows if what I said is relevant or not.

What do you mean fantasy? The only ones I could find over at
imdb that wheren't already part of an established franchise where Titanic, Finding Nemo and Independance Day (and that was in the top 20). Unless you're planning on licensing Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, I don't think 'Fantasy' is a particularly good genre.
You don't have to license lord of the rings style fantasy... You can make dwarven looking things and elves without worry. High Fantasy creatures and races are public domain... That's cause they are all based of fairytales and folklore.
Thanks for the comments.
The tiles do not move but just serve as a vessel for the playing pieces which are very vivid and colorful.
I'm definitely not licensing anything. It's just an art theme and only serves to make the game visually pleasing. There's really no plot either except to advance to the next level.

Makes sense. That'll let me get thru the art faster. I can always tweak it later.

Sure, but Lord of the Rings wasn't one of the biggest grossing moments of all time because it had dwarves in it. Other movies have had Dwarves in them (noticably Dungeons & Dragons - The Movie and Willow neither of which are immediatly on that list). Lord of the Rings is not a top grossing movie because it's fantasy themed. Lord of the Rings is a top grossing movie becuase it's Lord of the Rings.

Finding Nemo and Independence Day are both fantasy movies.
Back to the original topic, the sample tile looks a little dark to me. On my laptop, unless I'm sitting at just the right angle, the tree is difficult to make out.
Dungeons and Dragons the game was a big success because of the drawves, elves and high-fantasy setting... I don't remember dwarves in Willow...
These movies weren't high grossing because they SUCKED... not because they weren't lord of the rings... if the lord of the rings movies had sucked, they wouldn't have made so much money.
See the other lord of the rings movies (animations).
Only 8 days left on my deadline. :(
yeah weird and dark and look like there is some detail in the middle but I can't make out what.
Hey my deadline is similar to yours, Nov 3rd, except I've been working on this since April! (well it was two/three months of framework code then I started the game at the end of June, so 4 months ago)
