CD ripping woes

Before the Spanish Inquisition crew starts shouting 'WAREZ!!', this is for personal use...

I decided to rip all my CDs to losless wma format. First couple of albums took maybe 5 minutes each, but the latest one is looking like it will take maybe 2 hours using 99% cpu. The tracks it has got through do play. Any idea what the incredible difference could be due to?

Try holding down the left shift key when you put the CD in. That'll disable auto-run.

Dunno about other countries, but leeching music (from for ex. p2p) is legal in NL. In case ripping doesn't work I'd simply check for a 320kpbs version orso..

What I suspect you mean is that the NL government has taken a decision not to prosecute, or the judges have refused to convict. It's not legal, because the Netherlands are a member to almost all international copyright treaties. There is a world of difference between something being legal and the judiciary or government refusing to prosecute.

Gabriel, we pay a certain sum on blank CD's and blank DVD's, which will go straighly to the relevant organisations. So in a way we still pay for music, even if our CD/DVD's only contain backup stuff. That's all done to compensate for leeched music..

Anyway, afaik leeching music is legal here.. (just don't upload!), leeching software is not legal.

Does this mean MS Secretly supports computer piracy??? The ability to disable autorun???

Could be, imagine the following: You buy a box o' 10 CD-r's. Each CD has this extra 5ct tax orso (dunno). You burn one leeched audio CD, the rest is backup. In total you pay 50ct 'tax' for that single audio CD. This is about the same (maybe somewhat less tho) compared with a normal shop CD.

So, in a way it sounds reasonable. Unless you are a backupper who really uses 10/10 CD's for backup.. then those persons would ask 'why should artist X get another Rolls Royce, only because I backup my Word documents?'

I guess it's like healthcare insurrance, we all pay. Someone else gets sick, and you stay healthy.. it may be unfair, but it's the way it works, and I think it works decently enough.

Lossless wma? Is it intended for a specific portable player?

Just in case anyone else reading this is thinking of ripping to a lossless format, have a bit of an investigate into Monkey's Audio and/or FLAC. The former manages to compress better than anything else I've tried, but I understand the compressor is Windows only. FLAC is multi-platform.

I have some 192KHz 24bit monkeys audio compressed files. Sound very sweet :)
