This is a REAL game!

http://www.limbogame.org/

I get the same feeling watching this that I did when I first played Oddworld, or Heart of Darkness, or Out of this World/Another World.

I don't know what platform it is for or when it will be released.

Erm,

duplicate thread - see here...

This game deserves TWO threads!

Oh and I have some additional info. The guy developing it is named Arnt Jensen, and he appears to be from Germany, and is developing it with a grant from the government, and I found a job posting by him in german looking for a C programmer and level designer as of 9 days ago. So it looks like this might be a mockup and that it will be quite a while before the game is released.

He is Danish.

I don't care if he's from the moon, it looks great!

Another plataformer? :'( When is people going to create new games?.

You sound like a guy who didn't even watch at the trailer. Go have a look, really.

Fantastic!! Very nice art style. I only wish they kept going with the 2d Oddworld series .. that was the mutts nutts!!! Hopefully, this'll be in the same vein.

I hear it's made in 'flash' - is that not a bit restrictive?

depends really. Considering flash has a huge install-base and you'd be able to play it on your browser, I don't think he'd be restricted in terms of audience. As for a game programming platform, flash won't have superb 3D shaders or anything, but it's more than capable of creating decent games, especially with artwork like that.

Pumperama! I was scared...that looks awesome!

Did you notice? No yellow/black stripes?! ;O)

er..I was going to suggest it could use a few..especially around the spider's legs and in the sky.

I agree. To say there's nothing new here is extremely silly.

Well, personally i think that the art is very nice but there is nothing really new in it. What you can see out of the trailer is that it looks more like a mix of several games and music videos. Secondly as a game it would get on my nerves due to the greyscale if this would be all through the game. Greyscale is nice for a level where it fits like a mechanical world or so but compared to a reasonable coloured atmospheres (palette schema) it's not a winner. I suspect they have a long way to go and hope they change the colouring otherwise it sucks after some time.

You guys are crazy. :) This is one of the coolest and most stylized games I've seen in ages.

The greyscale graphical look is what makes this stand out .. any colour, unless subtle would spoil the whole effect I think.

it looks great...

perhaps a thing that would make it stand out even more, would be to have coloured cut-scenes. :)

I'm sure, thinking about it now that this type of game was done on the Amiga...does anybody remember a game completely in silhouette on the Amiga? I can't have dreamt it surely?

Wow, me want!

@Stevie G
Use a post production greyscale shader on a normal game or just use an emulator with the right settings to get some sort of idea and after some time turn back to colours. => Whoops a whole new world to explore! Greyscale is nice for movies but at least i don't want them in games as you play games much longer and there is so much more to explore in the colour dimension. Compare a greyscale drawn forest scenario and a forest scenario which has reasonably choosen colour palette. The second will beat the first one for sure.

@christian223
Well..I cant see anything bad in platformers if they done properly and with some unique style..

You're entitled to your opinion but it's a matter of personal taste. On this occasion I prefer the lack of colour so will agree to disagree.

Stevie

Yep a matter of taste and user experience... :O)

Well.. if you took any old game and greyscaled it, that isn't the same as something designed to be in greyscale... Millions of people read manga, and 99% of it is black and white, some is greyscale and very few are in color.

Why? Because if the art is good, it doesn't matter if it is in color. Good contrast is what is important. Sure, some people don't watch balck and white movies cause they are black and white, that doesn't mean Citizen Kane isn't a great movie... It just means they never saw it.

Well, i disagree. As i said in my opinion this could look a lot better if they would go for the right palettes instead of just greyscale.

Secondly it's a fault to compare different media and just say if it worked as a comic so it also works as a game. It works as a film then it also works as a game. I also did read b/w Akira instead of the coloured ones and i do love b/w movies but in this case i see much more potential and fun when doing it resaonable coloured instead of greyscale.

You play games much longer than you just watch a movie. And the style they did fits much better if it would be coloured in my opinion and if you would have the opportunity to switch and it would be done well i bet most of the people would play the coloured version.

[My Opinion]

Another thing I like the idea of with the black siluete style is that you don't get bogged down with alot of graphical detail, edges excluded. I guess it could be considered a cop out but shit graphics in black/white would look far better than in colour. Also, consistency of artwork is much easier with this kind of style. My artistic talents are almost non-existent so this kind of thing inspires me and should inspire others.

[\My Opinion]

The physics, animation, and world detail are very impressive.

I know that the majority of people love old designs like plataformers, fps, rts, etc, and i also belive this game look awesome, it has excelent content, but the problem is that its not a new game, game makers love so much older times that they keep repeating older designs, when are we going to understand that there are infinite posibilities to discover in game design if we apply the effort to make them?.

Visual possibilities are infinite and that can be seen, but game design appears to be stuck in the past.

These games you speak of that are "stuck in the past" are what made gaming what it is today, and will continue to tickle the senses of those of us who do not crave a world filled with normal-mapped, over-muscled grenade-launching used-to-be-human cyborgs.

Sometimes while playing we need to be able to stop, look and listen while being in a simple world. If you judge a game by its graphics, then you are part of the problem.

These things are evolutionary, over the last 20 years, a lot has changed in games, from a gameplay standpoint. Sure, a lot of it seems obvious now and a lot of it seems like it should have happened sooner, but the reality is that people don't play games that break the mould too much... That is... They don't sell well..

So when a revolutionary game comes out that breaks the traditions of game design... it gets overlooked.

Always.

Then, later on, people start taking bits from it and putting them into other games.. and you wind up with something new in the same old thing... The biggest issue with same-type games, is that so few bother to advance the game at all, that things seem to have stopped moving forward.

The solution seems simple enough... Keep mostly the same gameplay, and add in tons of new bits... Then, in the next game, keep the new bits, and change all the old stuff.. 50-50 it... or if thats no good, 33-33-33 or 20-20-20-20-20... Point is... if you break the new stuff up over a bunch of games, you can create a whole new genre

So go spend the next 15 years of your life trying to build a new genre, that seems fruitful.

Sound reasonable to you?
