Capturing Audio Question

I am trying to avoid installing the drivers that came with my Sound Blaster Live as they seem to actually slow my system down much more so than the defualt XP ones. This however is giving me a problem. I cannot seem to capture audio in the same way that I can when the drivers are installed, everything else works nicely though. I am using the Creative Sound Recorder that came with the drivers and card but cannot figure out why it won`t record any sounds. I have tried other recorders with the same problem, no sound is picked up.

Can anyone help or offer some advice. I really need it to work without installing those drivers but if I have to then I will.

Jason - make sure that the recording volume settings for the mic or line-in are not turned right down or disabled - they tend to be by default. I'm pretty sure I use the default XP drivers with an SB Audigy and it works ok - don't know if the SB Live is different.

Do you mean it doesn't work at all? or that it works differently ;)

Ricky, that was the first thing I checked. The volume was set to mute as you say but changing them has no effect, I`m still getting no sound when trying to record :(

Cygnus, all other audio works fine but I am getting no input when trying to record. Normally you see the little level meters (or whatever they are called) going up and down but at the moment they are just still.

I seem to remember trying the asio4all drivers and having problems before but I may give them another try if nothing else works. Thanks for the link.

If you go into Sound & Audio Devices in Control Panel what is your default device for Sound Recording in the Audio Tab ?
It should be something like SBLive [D 400} - if the driver is correctly installed then there should be an activated volume button - click on this and make sure the correct device for recording is set - it could be set to record the midi synth etc instead of the line or mic.
If this doesn't work try uninstalling all sound card related drivers - reboot - and then re-install

I'm sure you'll have already done this but just in case :) When I first tried using creative recorder I didn't realise that I had to alter the input in creative recorder itself - with the drop down menu at top left - the result was the same as you're having.

Ricky, that did the trick, it was set to mic. Great :) Thanks again and thanks for all the other tips and links guys, much appreciated.

Now all I need is a decent, free, sound recorder. The windows one is fine but it only allows 60secs. Any recomendations? I cannot seem to install Creative Sound Recorder without the drivers also being installed, grrr...
