Alternative to AdAware?

Sorry, I know these sort of topics crop up all the time. Anyway, I normally use AdAware at home and I tried to set it up for someone else today but it wouldn't update via their router connected to a hub so I thought OK, I need to try an alternative.

So can alyone recommend a mainstream effective and free anti-spyware tool which isn't actually spyware infested itself? Thanks in advance.

or Microsoft Defender, its pretty decent too.
less thourough but free and web-based, is http://housecall.antivirus.com , which does both virus and spyware scanning (by Trend Micro)

they find a ton of stuff that AdAware won't -- and vice versa! Unfortunately there is no on definite anti-spyware solution that keeps you safe, for best results you really need multiple at this point in time. :-/

Defender

hmm, MS Defender, is that free for home use?
I don't really want a combo anti-virus + spyware as I already have AVG installed. Good advice about multiple scanners, though I don't know if I can be bothered ;-)

Yup... It's the former MS anti-spyware Beta, and is a freebie.

I find that a combo of AVG, MS Defender, Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware and CCleaner is pretty solid, but then I don't surf warez sites, P2P sites ( same thing ) porn sites or anything so I'm not sure how much of a risk I am in the first place.

I use AVG, Spybot and occasionally AdAware at home.
At the office I use McAfee, Spybot and Ms Defender (AdAware is only free for personal, noncommercial use)

Webroot's Spy Sweeper is very good (probably the best) - if a bit 'in your face' at times.

Defender is SNOOPware... it allows MS to snoop on all the programs you run and gets suspicious... I had to plug in the original CD of quite a few products so I killed it. (I did own the CDs by the way!... it was just annoying.)

Rook: That sounds pretty annoying. Yeah this is for an office and the CDs are owned so that souldn't be a problem. Perhaps I'll try Spybot...
