Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Simple is the new Awesome for Internet Games?

Been playing a few very simple games really and enjoying them quite a lot.

Falling Sand:

Grow RPG:

Grow:

Grow Cube:

and an old favourite Dungeon Escape:

It does seem to me that the key to getting a good web game is to make it instantly accessable and very simple. Do you think this could be translated to stuff outside a browser?

I like that sand thing - Not sure how to play the 'grow' games.

dungeon escape is very hard on a laptop touch pad. hehe ill try it with my mouse when i get home. quite nice games but i dont think anyone would pay for them. they wouldnt sell from screen shots.

Well thats the basic idea of what causes the sudden rise of popular indie games. Its simple and straight to the point and takes you back to the basics of why games are fun to play. Unless you're a more serious gammer, anything that takes more than 10 seconds to figure out how to play gets dull quick......but then again, maybe thats just me.

That first one is reminding me, I just saw this on another forum:

Simple is good if simple doesn't mean shallow with a lack of development. Simple is good if it's very clean, clear what to do, like a highly polished diamond. If you just make a game that you're calling simple because it hardly has any features, it could be not a good game to play. It has to condence appeal and longevity into a simplified an interface as possible. It almost has to be archetypal.

@jhocking - the 'addictive!' thread beat you to it.

EDIT : (Sand game) Where did my last 2 hours go?!?

EDIT : (Another 2 hours) Yay! I won Grow RPG =]

I liked the dungeon escape one, reminds me of those old dragons lair laserdisk games.

I found a good one the other week, its actually a very in depth little game, with gameservers, campaigns, map editors, cool musik(sep download)

its a turn based strategy/rpg, free and works on any system (linux, windows etc)
