Type of Music

Whats Up Gentelmen,
Has anyone done military games? I'm sure you have. My question is, what is the type of music that is normaly played with military. For example, Delta Force 2 with Chuck Norris. Have you heard the theme they play over and over? The keyboard sound. I've searched, trying to put a name to this style of music. No one Knows. Rainbow Six, has music that sounds miltary. (ive been able to take the mp3 off the cd) I know your saying that the Programers created theyre own music. But the question is What genre is it? It sounds patriotic and puts a cold chill up my back. I love and want to put a name to it. And 'theme's' didn't work for record companies. So, Im stuck with naming the style. Can anyone help?

i remember listening to rainbox six stuff a while back. It reminds me of an epic/action/adventure genre of music. Hans Zimmer is a popular composer for that type of musical style. Listen to 'The Rock' soundtrack by him as it seems Rainbow six's music seems to follow that style closely.

ya, you guys are on the right track. Just listened to some of that Hans Zimmer (even did "Backdraft" the movie) Thats the style. I always believed, no matter how good your game is (or Movie) The music sets the REAL element of your work. It lets your audiance know what feeling or emotion your sending. I also love the "Oh man, the Navy S.E.A.Ls are comming after you" feeling. At the moment, the "Delta Force" keyboard song is my favorite. But there is one on Rainbow Six (part 1) that has no name. So I gave it one. I'm going to check out Cannon Fodder theme now. Thanks

Wow, I wish I could call it that (music companies would laugh though) Comandoes 2 Beyond the call of duty(not sure who made it offhand) But the game has a great theme. You first hear the girl with her "OO" lyrics (I hope she wrote them down so she doesn't forget) and then the music. Sad part about that is, they wrote and created they're own music. Cant buy it. But ya, thats pretty much it. Im going to have to call it 'miltary music' for now. Do you guys know of a site that has samples? Maybe they can lead me on the right track.

military .. or war. Those are different :P

Rambo (Jerry Goldsmith) is an ideal example about war, not about military. In this particular case the music was more heroic/patriotic with a guitar to accent the 'coming home' thing. (guitars are used for that.. it's in Das Boot, but also in Crimson Tide)

So, should the game be about plain military, or is the deeper meaning of the game about a specific war? If so, it might be interesting to focus on the war thing. Vietnam and WW2 are often romantised wars. Btw, I truly can't see any of this in the gulf wars or Iraq/Afghanistan wars. Even the yugoslavian war doesn't do it for me. I've seen one movie about it, The Peacemaker, but that was more American than anything else .. :P

You know what CS_TBL, that is a very good point. Never really put that into prospective. Star Wars for example was an awsome piece of music about war (of its own) But would never use John Williams 'Star Wars' theme for a herocic moment. If anyone has ever played 'Delta Force' the game, you would of heard a certain music played in the background. Well, 6 months ago I watched a documentery about Iraq and the military there. If anyone watched this would have watched a 1 minute clip of rangers kick open doors with music in background. To my delight it was the theme song to Delta Force the game. The music matched perfectly. But, I guess I would say military is the way to go. War music is the 'over all' music. Military on the other hand is the 'heat of the moment'.

Found another great song. Looking mp3's on dogpile.com, I found Navy Seals Soccom 3 Theme from James Dooley. This is the type i'm talking about. If you check it out, give it 13 seconds into the song. Its a total of 1:36sec . Not long but between the 13 seconds to 40 seconds, it gives that particular feeling. I believe this is the game from playstaion 2. I dont know of anyother Soccom but that. This song is mp3 for windows movie player.

Does any one have any other songs to check out? Movies or games?

klaus badelt is another good composer. Not necessarily military, but fun to listen to anyway.

As for free music that might be up your alley. I listen to and have sometimes used Justin Durban's music in some of my projects (never released any of them). Check out his music at www.edgen.com/music . Also if you like digging for stuff for games you can try

Alex O, Im probaly going to be on flashnet.com all night. What A variety. Thank you. It pretty much wont have the military or anthing, but the resorce's of the site look nice. I'll mess around there for a while. I contacted a site that doesn't work yet, but steve, the guy who runs it said he has no problem composing music for anyone, just as long as we use his name in credits. His website is: http://www.futuredevelopments.org.uk . I also asked him about composing music like silent hill 1. The sounds and music scared the bajeebeez out of me. He says as long as people want it, he will make it. A possible lead for ALL gamers and programers. I hope he is good as he says. And IT'S FREE. Just mention his name in your credits like I said before.

I know US military listens to Slayer when killing. But if you've heard them you want to kill somebody to.

I think its sort of a modern electronic style. Not techno or anything but mellow. Think splinter cell.

yes, Im actually trying a few leads. I actually went to the site Alex O suggested, and found an idividual who said "any requests, please e-mail" Gues what, He might finish reading the e-mail I sent him by Christmas. So now I have two people creating this style. Any yes, Splinter Cell is the music I like for my overall in my miltary programing. It has the computer-miltary sound. Now that I found something else about computer programing, Im creating a NEW Topic for this. I might call it "Making Your OWN music"
