Speed test - please try this

This EXE loads an image in 128x128 segments, then constructs the entire background from it. The image (one I found from google) is 1024x768 and the code scales it down to fit 640x480, advantage being that it doesn't get scaled up to 1024x1024 internally as it would if it were a single image, so saves resources.

EXE will run fullscreen, 640x480x16. Press ESC to exit.

I'm interested in what FPS everyone gets (top left), plus system specs.

Should probably add - I'm particularly interested in getting results from laptops, as Blitzmax seems to have speed issues on some of them.

Can you describe what your doing?
My game also uses huge background images roughly 2800 to 3000pixels. and I'm using a tiling method that I think is pretty fast.

Some of the laptop results are quite worrying...

Settles on about 3200 fps on my Laptop.

Well this is the whole argument about onboard 3dChips making computers worse. Mine (above), is a 3d chip, but to be honest its a really really bad one. Take "CarmaGedeon", under software on my old toshiba (599Mhz) it ran really well, but it simply doesnt have a stable frame rate on this one.

I dont think that you are going to be able to solve this, well not for laptops like mine, cos the M760 chipset is renowned for being rubbish. It honestly is easyer for me when running old software to run them in softwere mode.

Holy cow. Just tested this on my own laptop (which was tied up running a 24/7 CCTV system earlier).

90fps.

Toshiba Satellite 118-114, P3 1.1GHz, 16mb Trident Cyberblade graphics (shared), 256Mb RAM, WinXP SP2.

System is a bit old now (5 years), but still... I expected better... :/

16mb Trident Cyberblade graphics is a 2d accelerated chip, not a 3d one. So its not a suprise really.

Just tried a BB3D equivalent of the same routine, runs at 1500FPS compared to 1100FPS Blitzmax version.

Will try the laptop and report back...

You may need to force Max2D to use SOLIDBLEND to emulate behavior of your Blitz3D version.

At the beginning FPS was ~515 and after couple of minutes it decreased to ~470 and still very slightly decreasing.

I get a steady 450fps on my laptop with a Radeon Xpress 200M.

I get about 1520 on my 2GHz PC, not too shabby.

Dave if you're REALLY that concerned with potentional slowdown on drawing a backpicture before all your graphics, don't beat yourself up about it.
Use B3D, draw your picture B2D style (LoadImage->DrawBlock) then draw all your 3D BMaxy style stuff on top of your picture using quads (ala NSprite).
Potential slowless solved, then it will run on all old hardware. Either that or just tell your audience to get a better PC, it's your choice! :)

1640FPS, seems my old rig still cuts the mustard:

I have the worst laptop at work.... IBM Thinkpad 600e P2 it does have 512+ ram but it has onboard vid card (haven't looked... will report when I dl it from work and run it... I think this one might be below the baseline!

That's right Grey - played FarCry the other day and turned up the AA this time.

On my laptop (P4 3.4, x600 gfx) it got 1400 fps.
