what are some good laptop brands since my dad is finally going to get me a new one
my old one is falling apart on me, it is like 5 - 6 years old and it is shot to hell
so what brands do you suggest i go for, i am already counting out dell because they suck

The el-cheapo models do, the higher end ones are actually pretty decent.
Anyway, the real question is what you are planning to DO with it. there's a MAJOR difference on what to get, depending if you expect to do any 3D-related stuff with it. the vast majority of laptops have attrocious video adapters, and wouldn't be able to play any half-way decent 3D game if their life depended on it. Similarly, they tend to have a difficult time with BlitzMax as well, since it heavily depends on 3D performance.
dude, BMAX programs run fine on my current crappy laptop in directX mode
heck i got BB games running fine on it, i think a laptop can handle directX 8
i am going to be programming, movies and playing some older games, like halo, some old unreal games and a few RTSs nothing real new. i leave those to my desktop when i get one
for music i have a PSP with a 2 GB card
also my desktop which has 268 MB of RAM and only built in graphics card can play some good 3D indie games i am sure a laptop with simlair CPU speed, 1-2 GB of RAM, and a decent graphics card
can play most of the stuff you guys put out and play 2 year old PC games, even with the graphics turned down on newer ones
hell i saw laptops play games just as well as PCs of the same generation

Generally you can't go wrong with a popular brand of laptop. Don't buy laptops on ebay if you value your money
good point and i never do trust drives i get from ebay used
my dad can probably swipe a good one from his work though since it seems people never use their laptops the company gives them and the company never asks for them back

i heard alienware is fragile stuff and not the best battery life(can let is slide if the thing kicks butt) and they are pricy but i will look into them

I got a £500 toshiba laptop from pcworld...Equium A110-233 that runs bmax a lot better than i was expecting. Runs my little game at 200fps while my dual core desktop with 7800gt card does 500fps.
That equium a110-233 isnt too bad. My GF's dad got one and it handles what I throw at it.
Personally, I've had a Dell Latitude D610 (older model) and it was great, I want to replace it with a newer Dell model, XPS perhaps :)
Well, I, for one, would consider the MacBook Pro if I could afford it (well, perhaps after Leopard's release, of course), then dual boot Leopard with Windows Vista Basic Edition for starters, if necessary, dual boot it with the Pro Edition (dunno if the Ultimate Edition of Vista would be worth anything). However, with this type of notebook, you have something made of metal, which is something that most notebook manufacturers simply won't do.
On that note, I'd say that Panasonic's ToughBook, or the Twinhead may be great, if you're a clumsy oaf and knock your notebook all over the place, and accidentally do dumb stuff to your notebook. Those metal cased notebooks appear to be the most rugged, so I'd consider something like that.
Toshiba... My current laptop has been superb and when I get a new one, it'll also be a Toshiba :)

With the new apple machines you can run Windows on them too - so you get to compile your Blitz programs for both Windows and Mac. You also get a lot more software bundled with them and the battery can last for upto 6 hours.
What Amon said: Be very, very VERY careful when buying laptops from EBay. They're one of the high-fraud items, with a lot of hit-and-run scammers looking to make a quick buck. Many of those auctions use hijacked accounts, so even amazingly good feedback won't protect you there.
think twice, if you value your money. If it sounds too good to be true, it normally is...
I can vouch for that. Housemate spent £500 on an ebay laptop which he never received. Last I heard the police were involved as this guy had scammed a lot of people. He did a runner before he was supposed to appear in court.
i will try to get a MacBook Pro with at least a 50 GB HDD so i can have enough space for Mac and Windows stuff
also can i set it so it boots Windows automaticly instead of Mac OS X? just want to have all the options i can, if i am working on a windows version of some modules for a few weeks i am going to boot in windows a lot more then if i was working on the Mac version
The lower end MacBook comes with 50GB HDD, so you should be fine. When you have Bootcamp and load windows, it boots in Windows until you switch back to Mac OS X. Additionally, there's software out there that allows you to run Windows programs under Mac OS X without the need to own a copy of Windows.

I would just build me own using the ASUS Whitebox and putting in the bits I wanted... look for BAREBONE LAPTOP and see what you see!!!
On my third Dell right now... never had a problem (well, my last one died within a month of having it, but they had someone on site the next day and eventually just built me a new one). But then I buy nothing but their best models with the top of the line everything too... I have no experience with their low end stuff.

Unless you NEED MacOSX, don't spend the money on it, you are not getting more of a system.
I have used Dell for 5 years now, and 8 systems laters, i am very happy. They are middle of the road. You get a lot for your money, but they run a bit hot. But their screen is awesome and have decent video cards.
Read reviews on CNET or ZDNet and elsewhere before you buy. I have not been disappointed in purchases after reading reviews from those two sources.

also today they gave me a price limit of $800. i would have been fine with using my dad's laptop his work gave him that he never touchs, it is still in the box in his office
I have a white macbook(2ghz intel duo, 1gb ram) and it works perfect for developing, i run both windows and macosx on it, and it was cheaper than any pc i could find with the same hardware specifications. But, i have gotten the "random shutdown syndrome" so it is in for repair. It is said that the newest generation of macbooks dont suffer from random shutdown but if youre thinkin of getting one, check it up first!

I moved out this year, into my own flat, away from my parents. its expensive but damn does it feel good not to have to go to them for things.
i am 15, i am old enough to get a job and can get a job at a restuarant or something. even if all i do is clean dishs or be the grunt work it is something
i get paid for mowing 3 lawns, my dad owns some properties with his brother and i have to mow the lawns and only get paid $15
when winter comes around i will get no money at all until i get a job or next spring
I have an Alienware laptop and I won't be buying anything from them again. They're overly expensive and the extra money doesn’t' go into technical support or customer services either. It took them over a month to deliver my laptop when I bought it. I've recently had a problem with one of the RAM sticks and getting them to replace it was, actually *is* seeing as I've still not got it yet, a nightmare. The best thing is that you have to send defective parts back to them. I sent the part back expecting the replacement in a week. Two weeks pass, so I phone them:
"Where's my RAM?"
"We're still waiting for you to send the faulty part back"
"You received it two weeks ago, and I know that for a fact as you can track your package on the DHL website"
"I'll just put you on hold a second"
(bad music)
"Oh yeah! We did get it, can't do anything about it right now though. I'll phone you back tomorrow"

And that's the most annoying thing about their customer 'service', they have, on four of the five occasions when they claimed they'd phone me back, failed to do so. I had to phone them. Don't ever buy Alienwarez, they're shit.

Hmm, Gateway seems to have that innovative Tablet PC, which they dub the "convertible." It would be great to have one of those (especially after the way I do graphics by keyboard and mouse, this could be better to actually handsketch your graphics on the screen as an easel). IMHO, if it was a bit cheaper, I'd probably configure that to be a gaming tablet, but that may or may not happen. Hmm, a gaming notebook that converts into an easel and a note taking screen. Hmm, I can only imagine THAT one.

Im with FlameDuck on this one, my dell latitude, whilst great, had a CPU that would run up to 80c, stable. It got so hot on the bottom, it did actually burn my hand once.
so get a laptop cooler thingie, they're awesome and double as a laptop mousemat :)

this is going to be a temp one since mine is dying on me and i asked my dad many times to just let me use the one he has sitting in his office that is collecting dust. it would save him money and it is not like his work is going to ask for them back, they never do

Your parent don't need to buy you ANY computer at all, so being a little more grateful would be a good start. Sounds like a rather bad case of entitlement here.
they have only given me and my sisters secondhand/way outdated crap our whole lifes. anything that was new we had to buy ourselfs and that was rare since they did not let us get jobs for awhile. i rather buy a laptop myself and it be half-decent but i can't get a job.
my mom also hates computer and video games so she will stop at nothing to not let me play games without getting noticed by friends. she cares a lot about image and can't outright force me to stop playing games or she will look like a tyrant to everyone else we know

Hehe, reminds me of my first desktop. We had a PC company here in the local area that my father's workplace had a strong relation with. Of course, that PC company went out of business about five to ten years ago, too. I remember that Christmas in 1992 when I got that dream PC. It had some of the best fun I've EVER had for a starting PC, if only I can remember the exact configuration of it (that was eons ago, so bare with me).
It wasn't an Intel-based processor, it MAY have been AMD or Cyrix, I can't recall off hand. It was a 386 DX/40 Mhz, I believe that it was about 4 MB RAM, had a 40 MB HDD, Win 3.1 and DOS 5.0, a 5.25" and 3.5" floppy setup, maybe had an ATI graphics card, and Sound Blaster in there, later we added a 14.4bkps modem and a CD-ROM, and upgraded it to a 486 DX/66, as well as a second, larger HDD, and double the RAM. That brings back memories.
Of course, now I'm deciding on PCs myself, and at 25 - pushing 26 at the end of this week, I still slip my father a check to put a PC I configure on his credit card (my limit won't allow me to build anything fancy, so I have to turn to him). It's still great to know that you can get the config you want this day in age, and get away with it. Just depends on how much one is willing to spend on an investment, just as long as the whole family can use that PC, then you have to have that big configuration to handle everyone.
we have about 6 computers and most of them have something wrong with them and all but my mom's laptop she got from work has about 256 MB of RAM
my desktop was a freebe from my school, had to be reformat it becuase they locked out installing anything and the sound card was broken for months
what is going to be my grandma's computer soon has a HDD that is dying, win 98 OS, has gone through a lot of reformating, my mom forces it to run newer software thus making it run even slower
the one in my dad's office has broken files, the only one with a DVD burner(and the only DVD drive period), he never lets anyone use it
my brother's is in the middle of being reformated because he forgot his password(it was 6 characters long), he hardly used it at all anyway
my laptop has a busted up screen, about 8 keys don't work half the time, battery is degraded to the point where it has about 40 minutes of life, CD drive overheats after 2 minutes of usage
we honestly only need 1 great desktop and 1 good sturdy laptop to survive my brother, since my sisters moved out and the house is pretty empty without them and all their friends
i plan on giving my old laptop after i fix it up and reformat to a friend that wants to program but his parents keep kicking him off their computer whenever he has spare time to code

Your argument is specious at best. It's like saying "Never buy a Chevy because the goodrich tires that come on it had a recall."
The Dells do run hot. But I've never seen one shut down due to heat, nor have I had one too hot to use on my lap, and you can see my specs below. They are, though a bit older now, still top of the line.
oh, and link... I gotta agree with some others. You are being a bit of an ungrateful brat. Appreciate what you have and the fact that they are willing to drop 800 dollars on you for no real good reason other than you WANT one. There are a hell of a lot less fortunate out there than you that would kill to have your "busted up scree, 8 keys that don't work half the time, battery degraded...40 minutes of life, cd overheating" laptop.
I'd like to point out that I first programmed on PC, in the year 2000, on a PENTIUM 60, with a 1Mb graphics card.
I was GRATEFUL to receive this gift, despite the current pc's of the time heading up to 1ghz. thats 17 times faster. More than that if you think of all the optimisations.

Compal create great systems, but are sold under others brand in each country which makes it a little hard to find them.

But I definitely would NOT drop Dell early. Its still a brand I would highly suggest above Acer and Asus after major problems with their notebooks (I'm only on notebooks for over 6 years now and Dell was, beside my compal now, the only one with userfull performance at an acceptable price without beeing usable on line only).
Brands to drop are: Acer, Asus (both look cheap and great but their cases are badly manufactured and need to be returned once per 6-12 months) and Apple
Sony seem to be nice as well but it seems to depend a little on the actual series you want.
Aside that: there aren't that many that were not created by Asus and rebranded ... which is the significant Pro of Sony and Dell as they create their stuff on their own and not through Asus fabs
So why would you drop Apple Dreamora? They provide a very good deal for what you pay for and they are also reliable.
i would fix up the computers i have now with some RAM and decent graphics cards because the processors in some of them are not very bad but my dad refuses to let me open them up and put some RAM in them or buy some older graphics cards

XP Media center is good enough, but you can always upgrade that later. The video card is leaps and bounds better than the intel integrated, and the dual core processor is going to KILL that celeron in benchmarks.
If not the dell, shop around a bit because that lenovo is no golden apple there. In fact, I'd say it's far FAR from it.

Anyways. Dell is good. Get the laptop cooler, I have one, and you won't care too much about the heat. Also, they moved the hard drive back now so the heat is not around your hands anymore. You'll get more for your money compared to other name-brand, good warantee, 30 day money back shops.
One thing you might mention to your parents: It is better to invest an extra $200 - $300 now and have it last 3 years rather than having to buy a new one in 1 or 2 years because it is not very upgradeable and outdated.
When buying a laptop, get the best screen and the best CPU you can afford. Also, get the network card and the bluetooth - sometimes you can't upgrade later. Everything else can be upgraded later (hard drive, battery, memory).

Oh yeah... definitely. I just cut and pasted after customizing it. I didn't bother cutting out the chaffe. But the core specs are so much better than the lenovo that it don't matter much. :)

Why I would drop Apple:
Apple currently has 2 notebooks: MacBook and MacBook Pro
MacBook isn't an option to game devs as it has Intel GMA with shared RAM only. Thats nice for office and common work while you are on move and you want something small and unexpensive. That notebook after all is quite good.
But if you want 3D performance you need MacBook Pro and thats the one I definitely do not suggest to any of my friends anymore after 2 "mac ians" had their head washed.
the quality is lower than Asus, but they cost (at least here) 1,5x times as much and that even to me as Student who has around 20% off.
When Apple gets some usefull designers and manufacturers again, that don't think that upper mid end graphics is possible with 2cm thick notebooks, they might be a choice again.
I can't suggest a notebook that is 50+ degree celcius on the top side and even hoter on the bottom, as this is inacceptable and gives you some insight on how the components are most likely going to work out in the near future -> burnt.
Thats what the recent reports on instant shutdowns and crashes showed quite good.
Apple might do a great job with iMac and their "desktop" Mac and office notebook. But their "multimedia power entry" is extremely overpriced crap. (my compal Duo T2500, 2GB RAM, 7600Go 256MB and 15,4" @1680x1050 cost me 1600$ where a similar speced macbook pro costs me 2500$ and that at a lower quality with only 1 year waranty instead of 3. So I think I don't need to clarify why the MB Pro are not acceptable in their current state. Even alienware has the better prices and that although they are definitely winners of "highest price" normally ^^)
i was going to get a MacBook Pro but it is too much right now, may after i move out and save my money i will get one
Hmm, surprisingly I noticed that Westinghouse actually got into the notebook business (saw one at Wal-Mart this morning). Unless that was something in disguise of a notebook, couldn't tell. Well, knowing how ol' Westy is with computer monitors and HDTVs, I'm surprised to see them go all out on that stuff. How are their notebooks, if there are even any?

the price differnece is a lot for what looks like not all that much of a power increase
I'd go with the 2 GHz, it's only an 8% speed increase, too little to actually notice.

Thats a good plan. Its a good idea to get a pretty good to really good processor and graphics card sinse you can't upgrade them with out surgery:)

True, IMHO, I would've considered an AMD Turion x2 based notebook, since that's a far better processor from the original Turion. However, how does the Turion x2 compare to the Core Duo (I believe that the Core 2 Duo is 64-bit, so that should be the one to compare the Turion x2 to).
I just got my shiny new 15" MacBook Pro (2.16GHz) about a week ago. I've since installed Boot Camp and XP Home on a 32G FAT32 partition, so I can access all my Windows files directly from OS X. Now downloading CS Source (+SDK) and Half-Life 2
How/why I made do with a PPC Mac for so long, I'll never know.
