Insert key

What is the point of the insert key. How can I stop it doing that annoying delete as I write thing when I accidently hit it?

A better place for it would be on the other side of the Home key, I almost never hit Page Up accidently.

lol, it was actually there!

On my keyboard, which has the annoying F-Lock key crap, it's nicely part of the same key which contains the just-as-useless PrintScreen key is, and hitting F-Lock toggles that keys usage.

For the last couple of years, most of the Microsoft-branded keyboards actually no longer have the insert key in the island anymore... Instead they use a double-height delete key, and migrated insert to share the printscreen/sysrq button.

Personally I absolutely can't stand them, since I use shift-insert for pasting information about a brazillian times a day. (Thanks to it being the one universal paste shortcut that always works, in either windows as well as the linux shells... You can have my insert key in the island as soon as you can pry it out of my cold, dead fingers.

As both of you said; and because of the new arrangement I've had this damn keyboard for 6 months and _still_ not got used to it. Why can't they leave them alone!

F lock on keyboards is just about useless, i dont think ive ever used the other functions as its easyer to use the mouse than press f lock then the function key then turn off f lock again.

Keyboard manufacturers must think the only thing ppl use Ins for is text-related. As in: the PC is still only a sophisticated typewriter. I've plenty o' apps where the Ins key is a function on its own.. most obvious one: a tracker. I in fact vote for more keys on standard keyboards, another row o' F keys perhaps? Give keys to artists and they'll come up with a reason to use them.

??? The last one I bought had the insert key in its normal place... but I bought the cheapest one I could locate for my wife who needs no bells and whistles...

What I hate is that annoying windows access button... it is craptastiic!!! I seem to always hit it instead of the SHIFT when I am capitalizing 1/2 the letters on the keyboard!!!

It also disables the Insert key.

Could always buy one of those pad things which come with 32-some keys you can place anywhere on the pad you want, and use the included program to set macro's for each and every key for whatever the hell you pretty much want them to do.

Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the thing for the life of me, perhaps someone else here does?

[EDIT] Yep, that's the one Link.

you mean this

i really want one along with some of the other keyboards lsited here

Keyboards though, have, and always will be a poor mans game controller. Playing a game on keys suck and is comfortable for about 10 seconds.
