24 /7 internet connection to download NEW content whilst you sleep!

Media: A single self-loading media bay will play single- or double-layered 12-centimetre optical discs for Wii, as well as 8-centimetre Nintendo GameCube discs.

And here is something I didn't know:

It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.

Smashing!

Last time I heard about the developement kit, the pricetag was around USD 2000. But I really hope it's not true.

ah well, i was considering getting a Wii but i wont now, i object to getting shafted on the price of shit for no reason other than they can.

nicer thread title...
If only the game's price was a little bit lower...

It is already lower than other next gen which on their end will raise by 10-20$ in the future to keep up the massive costs involved in a HD game (why do you think do PC games cost 10-20$ more than they used to although the content is as crappy as always, just with nicer graphics? :) )

Lets hope nintendo does a step further and launch a non-Wii Sports version as well. don't need it, don't want it, I would have prefered Wii Play with its included Wii mote far above that US sporty game.

Players can use their own Mii caricatures in the game and play them against their friends' Miis
aaargh....

The high price of development kit prevents people from making free games, which would make lower sales of Nintendo games.

Because the Opera browser for Wii can view Flash and with the intention of Wii to be connected to the Internet 24/7, who needs the ability to write games for Wii with the Nintendo dev kit?

Does anyone know what Nintendo mean on their website by the following though?

Users download the Opera browser with Wii Points.

Not sure if this means that you have to pay each time you use the Opera browser or if it's just a one off payment.

One off payment. All downloadable stuff is bought with Wii points. Which are in turn bought by buying vouchers for real money. They work out at 1c (US) for one point.

Ooh, interesting point Game Boy. Make a flash game meant for Wii use... I'm sure someone will blow our minds away.

I think the Opera browser on Wii is to be a free download until June 2007 anyway.
Pretty silly that they'll stop offering it free, but maybe they will come to their senses...

John: 1 cent?!

Regarding dev kit price... That is probably a full-fledged dev kit with all sorts of debug tools.
It would be a good move by Nintendo to release a free homebrew/tiny developer dev kit with a license preventing commercial releases (unless they upgrade to a full dev kit).

Otherwise, homebrewers would end up hacking it anyway (and it has a lot of places to get in...) but they would at the same time open the system up to pirates.
Look what happened with the DS: It started with nice gentle homebrew, then those same devices (even the $25 ones!) became capable of ridiculously easy software piracy.

If Nintendo jumped aboard from the start, budgetless developers could settle their wishes without touching anywhere near piracy.

Regular K - you got it wrong; not flash games designed for Wii, but just flash games. You get the advantage of being able to write games that can be used on Wii and most other platforms including PSP, PS3, PC and Mac. If you're only intending to make small indie games, it sounds logical sense.

That all depends on how the Opera team is implementing Flash support.

Hopefully they will add an option that makes a Flash applet become separate from the web page since otherwise the controls would be very difficult.
(Otherwise we would be controlling a tiny box within a web page - both of which are looking for input).

"WiiConnect24 delivers new content even while users are sleeping or not at home, presenting new experiences that anyone can enjoy every day, and laying the foundation for a lifestyle in which everyone in the family can relate to Wii on a daily basis."
Have Nintendo been taken over by Microsoft or are they only sharing their PR staff? "Relate to Wii on a daily basis"... pff... :)

'eh, my only main purpose for using the web-browser would be to bookmark all my news/web-comic sites, cant see much purpose for actually *surfing* with it unless they implemented keyboard support as well via the USB ports on the Wii.

Was a bit miffed that the Europe's got a little bit shafted on the date/price, and the fact the system from what I've been reading, is region-locked......

Lets hope nintendo does a step further and launch a non-Wii Sports version as well.

You'll have to wait a fair bit though, as only the Japanese Wii's are sold without WiiSports, and no idea when Nintendo decides to sell a bare-bones system.

Speaking of Flash, wonder if Adobe ever added functionality in v9 which allows you to add your own scripts in, would be neat if you could get it to work with the motion-sensor of the Wiimote, rather then just the pointer, which just seems to mimic the mouse as it stands.

For WiiConnect24, hope it isn't anything bandwidth intensitive, I can live with it doing 20mb a night looking for random stuff that may or may not interest me (better be user-selectable options on what it can download)....

Cheaper then what both Sony & Microsoft are charing for their kits.....

All depends on how Nintendo is really going to handle the indy-produced content, you would have to make something real special to pay off the $2000 kit and whatever else Nintendo may charge to put the game "on" the marketplace for download....or offer a freebie alternative like Microsoft's XNA, for non-commercial enterprises.

$2,000 for a dev kit really isn't much money. If you can't manage that, then you're probably not going to be capable of finishing a solid game anyway.

Well, as far as the Opera browser goes, I just got the following from Games Radar of what Nintendo quoted:

"For the first six months I think we'll be looking at the browser to be free for people - it will be available as a sample sort of situation," Yarnton told us at last Friday's European Wii event in London.

So it sounds like they plan to charge you for every time you want to browse the Internet. Hmmm... I'll give that a miss thanks.

Sounds like a fair price. So to develop for it, we'll need to have a controller that works on the PC...

Ohhh that's a reasonable argumentation.

I somehow don't see a fun coder investing $2000 just for playing around with it. But maybe this guy could come up with a nice little game whilst doing so. $2000 is way too high for such individuals...

What's included in the dev kit? Is there any hardware that it costs more so it can't come for free or just covering the costs for possibly printage&shipment of any manuals?

All of a sudden i'm not that impressed by this system! :(

All along i've been right beside it, wanting one, but now, I beleive Ninty may have finally made something I don't want.

Of course, Mario will be released and I'll be unable to resist.. as always.....

Is it known for how many hours the battries last in the controller?

It's really annoying buying or recharging batteries...

Uses 2 AA batteries
30 hour battery life if pointer function is being used
60 hour battery life if only accelerometer is being used
Communicates with Wii via 2.4 GHz Bluetooth signal
Contains 6KB non-volatile memory
SYNCHRO button on Wii does the same thing as 1 and 2 buttons the WiiMote
Each controller is given a wireless ID number
A, B, 1, 2, -, +, Home, Power, C, and Z button are all digital (not analog)
Sensor Bar is placed below or above TV
Sensor Bar is 20 cm in diameter
Sensor Bar has a sensor on each end which interacts with WiiMote
LEDs on WiiMote used to indicate battery life as well as which controller slot it corresponds to:
4 LEDs flashing on startup means 75 - 100 battery life
3 LEDs flashing on startup means 50 - 75 battery life
2 LEDs flashing on startup means 25 - 50 battery life
1 LED flashing on startup means 0 - 25 battery life

http://www.gamingbits.com/content/view/886/2/##I think they recently cropped 10 hours off that pointer function time though.

Oh thanks...
