Banshee Shutting Down

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Banshee Shutting Down

The free hosting deal which has kept the Banshee site alive has come to an end. If there's any old games you guys want before it closes please let me know and I will email them to you, the zip files themselves are no longer online but the game descriptions are.

I'll probably be leaving one game online to keep Banshee 'alive' until whenever our next release is, and our current work in progress will be online which is a mod for the game Live For Speed. Everything else is going. This assumes the site does not shut down completely until we are more active again, which is a possibility.

I want to thank the indi scene for the friendships, the laughs, the great indi games from you lot and the endless forum debates about the most inane rubbish we could think of.

From all of us at Banshee past and present, good bye for now - but we'll probably be back :).

IPete2.

good luck see you one day ...

If it's just a matter of hosting, I might be able to cover that for you. What do you need?

Well, that's where there is a grey area because - and if you dont mind to save me retyping i'll copy/paste a message to another kind samaritan who ran away screaming:

Thank you very kindly for the offer XXXX. You might want to take back the offer in a sec when you see what Banshee uses, we use around 1gb of disk storage, 12 subdomains (most could be scrapped) and 20 email addresses (we could cut back to about 3-4) and today before the announcement where putting out 1gb/hour of traffic (although that was a bit of a peak and it doesnt run that level all the time).

It's more than just the games that are currently hosted, all tied in at the moment is our race series and mod for the game Live for Speed at www.simtouringcarcup.com which just released the first race broadcast (not linked atm because it's a staggered release, the broadcast is here: http://www.bansheestudios.com/Movies/STCC1-TouringCars.wmv). The problem there is viewers are asking for the higher quality stream (450mb not the 100mb one hosted now) which was just planned to go out to drivers.

To maintain our current hosting this package would cover it although wont allow for expansion or moving to higher quality coverage of our race series: http://www.xrshosting.com/index.php?page=bppackage

So I have to ask the question, do you want to cover it all, just Banshee (which i'd have to check current stats on but when we where active would get a few hundred thousand downloads a month), just the race series, or none of the above?

I know i've not been active here in a long time, there was a period when Banshee was extremely active and extremely sucessful but we've been quiet for a long time which is why I thought it better to shut up shop rather than seek out a new sponsor who'd want to see new games, but at the moment we're more focused on our mods and race series and games are something we might come back to later.

I'll take all of your RPG type stuff - code and media. Or anything else suitable.

lol :) Only if you sponsor my race series :)

I'll take that too.

If you're serious, it's going to be a several hundred pounds to cover the hosting of the series - even the bandwidth it currently uses is £600 a year and it's dying to expand, not compress, people want more. I'll speak with the hosts to come to an agreement and in return for which you'll get the obligatory banners around the race track, a commercial during the footage, a mention by the commentators and more interestingly for you all of my source code from the last couple of years and a copy of my media folder. I'll give some support in understanding it, but you will have to sign an agreement not to release my work verbatim but only to use the technology and methods, it's ok to copy/paste some code over but the final product should look different to my work in some way so that it is distinguishable.

I think you should hand over 'Fellowship of the Bling'.

Sure, that'll be £800 please.

£800.00 - you are having a larf - I've already got most of the media in your project - £50.00 seems fair to me - you could buy yourself a nice dress with that.

Right, £50.00 it is - how do I pay you?

"WTF???" Puki! :O

Well, in honesty - I have no idea what I am buying - I just looked at the pictures and saw that most of the media I already have.

Is it worth more? It looks like a project in early stages to me - I should be charging her to tidy it up and finish it.

I have my eye on that landscape thing she did though - it might be in the project - not sure - there isn't a lot of info on the site about it.

I hope we will still be able to read the legendary war diaries then?

"saw that most of the media I already have"

Puki - please explain this statement, else you'll really be p***ing a lot of people off.

If this is what it sounds like, Becky I know you can go for the jugular - I'll hold your coat.

£800 was a laugh Puki, and yes Bling doesnt have all that much unique media, just the castle model really.

On a serious note I wouldn't be interested in making small sales as it would not achieve anything in terms of allowing the STCC to expand. By closing Banshee the STCC can carry on as it is, but to expand it I need a lot of bandwidth, and I meen a lot.

Moving over to a half gig broadcast would result in around 40tb/hour with the viewing figures it could achieve. The problem is I need to get those figure before it is worth anything, and to do that I need a corporate partner and not small sales of fairly simple programming technology.

In the future I will likely come back to games so i'll be leaving something on the Banshee site, but that's all this is about. I'm not selling up and moving on, Banshee Studios has been around 25 years and it is a team not an individual (I'm the one with the internet connection, lol - we're that backwards here in the Fens!).

I might have considered a full sell off of all my work, but in reality it's not worth enough to make a difference.

I think it's puki who needs shutting down :)
