Well to me it doesn't look like codersworkshop is coming back.

Any way to access old threads and old showcases? One thing I want is the comments from my showcases such as this one (link doesn't work.)

More often than not, you can find a cached copy of the site in question there, especially if you know the full URL.

(Look for the 'wayback machine' portion of the site)

I think Ididigon were very naughty to pull the forums - especially considering there was no warning.

one that has no respect for it's userbase? not long.

Its not a bad business, the codebase and forum stuff was just to grab a market share for Cobra and other incidental packs they had. Now that they have decided to move over to soly the educational market, the forums were just a waste of money.

Seems good business to cull it in my opinion

Actually, the author of the site is moving onto pastures new, and everyone else is busy with other tasks, so the sensible option was just to shut it down.

Codersworkshop was a totally free forum, so noone can really complain bitterly about the service that you never paid any money towards, if you didn't like it, you didn't have to use it. I didn't particularly like it, so I chose not to use it, but many people did like it, so that's ok for them.

Besides, almost everyone here complained about Coders Workshop all the time for one reason or another, but now that it really is gone you still complain.
Some people are never happy are they? :)

Don't get your hopes up of the forums coming back, the chances of that are quite slim. They can save on the bandwidth instead, I hope it doesn't come back, one less place for slack arse coders to waste their time in.

There could have been a warning to people that the forums were going to close. Some people lost stuff in there.

I was still counting on CW to return as the message "This site is closed until further notice. Sorry for any inconvenience" seems to suggest it would. I liked to read and post there and to show new games to people.

People do complain a lot about the site but in fact there aren't many sites around where people are talking a lot about Blitz Basic and can showcase their work in a somewhat happy atmosphere. I mean I could look like a monkey on that site thanks to the avatars, here I can only look like a monkey through what I type.

Foppy this lead me to totaly the oposite conclustion. Its what you put when you have no intention of opening again, but dont want to say so

I'm inclined to think that this is one of those things which gets lost in translation. Taken literally, it does suggest that it will open again, but in reality, as H&K says, it is a choice of words people tend to pick when they really mean "forever but I want to reserve the right to change my mind plus I don't want to get any flack for saying never".

Looking at a few facts (and resulting theories):

1. The site replaced Blitzcoder.com and effectively leeched its entire member's list by billing itself as a direct replacement so that everybody went there.

2. Some company or other was going to release a language called Cobra. Cobra was a lot like Blitz in its syntax.

3. A lot of people expected support for all other competing languages to be dropped as soon as Cobra was released.

4. Then all of a sudden, codersworkshop disappears, Graham is left to make an announcement and take the resulting flak of the aforementioned.

5. CobraLE, it emerges, is all that is going to be released through the original choice of publisher.

6. CobraLE will be sold to the educational sector, meaning the userbase poached some two years earlier was no longer needed.

7. If the userbase is no longer needed, then neither is the site. Its shut down, hinting that it will re-open later. After a while, people will have found somewhere else to live, if they haven't already.

8. codersworkshop.com slips unnoticed beneath the waves.

I don't see why there needs to be another Blitz forum besides this one anyway.

The people who bought Blitz2d and Blitz3d in good faith and didn't receive BUID's spring immediately to mind. Good to see Cicero finally has one after one heck of a long time, mind.

And there was a showcase and an off-topic forum, and most importantly, avatars! 8)

Well, it did also have forums for other languages besides Blitz, at least notionally, although to be honest there was never much activity on them.

Actually, most of the time it was largely a teen chat site. That, and a whole lot of Cobra hype-mongering.

I love the way people decide there was a load of hype, when all that existed was roughly 4 topics (self contained which could be switched off in the user prefs), and a very small fraction of the total number of posts on CW.

Certainly not my definition of a 'whole lot of hype'.

Well I dont know I agree with that. After all one could say that there is/has been a "Whole lot of Max3d Hype", and there arent any Real topics about that. And no oficail page.

(HAHA, No your right I dont think cobra was Hyped at all, it only had that one official page, and everyone moaned that, that never got updated. (Zept to change release date back and from TBA)

No way I can check your maths, but perhaps it's because the vast majority of posts were Off-Topic.

4 topics and several thousand posts spanning a two year period - all for a product yet to be released. Yep, I know a whole load of hype when I see it.
And I noticed you never once objected when it spilled over onto the other forums, despite jumping on anyone straying off-topic within one of "your" forums.

I heard it was aliens.

How about this for a wacky idea.

The main person who was running the site decided to leave and with several other major changes going on, they needed to rethink the site and its future. Maybe there are some other issues that might just be a little more important that need sorting first. What if after talking to Graham, they both decided on a new way forward for Cobra. Perhaps this involves sorting some new contracts that could possibly take a little time to sort out etc.

Could be that they got fed up with all the moaning that happened on the forums that they where paying for and providing totally free.

Nah, that’s totally crazy. Much better to think there is something sinister going on I guess.

Sigh, I think the final 'cobra related' post count was actually around the 250-300 mark (not counting the power mousey ramblings, which I don't think people can really count!)

Right, I have told them that we are taking their forums over - I suggest everyone register and then we can decide what to do next.

So I wouldn't be at all surprised to find a few of the #blitzcoder reprobates over there. If I wasn't so busy that I haven't been in IRC for months, I'd probably be one of those reprobates, instead of being an unregistered reprobate.

I can't take all the credit, it's a collaborative effort by the fine people from IRC; namely Oscar, Poedgirl, myself... with Gosse, Orca and Jayenkai as moderators.

(not forgetting an A-class userbase, who've made it possible) :)

I guess the question arises as to who actually has the rights to the content of the old BlitzCoder site? I note that some former CW posters have restored their material (previously posted on CW) onto the new DevCrunch site - very commendable.

Perhaps some of the old BlitzCoder archives (which I believe are still accessible) could be similarly restored, before they disappear entirely.

That devcrunch is indeed the new home of codersworkshop, it's a laugh a minute down there. Off topic is 1 and half times the size of every other forum put together and with topics like:-

"I like bmax" -> "Yes"

and Noel Cower wishing you a "Wishing You a Happy 9/11"

It's good to see that in times of forum difficulties people are pulling together and spreading their love and warmth in useful and non procrastinational ways. Thankgod we live in a sensible world. Praise the lord!

ENAY, thanks for using 2 locked threads as an example, and pointing out that a 2 week old forum isn't as productive as this place.

How about a revision of www.blitzwiki.org to include a forum and to look nicer?
The Wiki software makes it excellent for user-submitted articles / code archives, and most other things can be thrown in pretty quickly.
