Am I correct in my assumption that pngs with transparent areas do not show the transparency when view on a web page? I just tried a single image in IE and it didn't work.
Will there be any future change to web browsers that allow this I wonder?
They work in Firefox, but not IE. I think the problem is fixed in IE7, but I'm not totally sure.
There's a couple of workarounds that use Javascript, although I've never used them before so can't promise anything:

yes I would have hoped that IE 7 would fix it (I'm not using it yet) Thanks for the links, the PHP seems a little complex but I guess a decent web developer should be able to figure it out. The Javascript option seems viable unless people have it turned off, which isn't very many people in reality...
