Please recommend Japanese Shoot 'Em Ups

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Please recommend Japanese Shoot 'Em Ups

Hi, can anyone recommend some cool (PC-Based) Japanese shoot 'em ups, or games in the style of, please. I've played a few and am eagerly searching for more. Thanks loads. I'm sure you can point me to a big list somwhere, but personal recommendations are best I find. :-)

A classic ... Tumiki Fighters.

Get Every Extend. It's free.

well I've just been playing Dan Da Dan until my hands and mind bled. Tumiki Fighters is on my list to try thanks and so's Every Extend so I guess your recommendations stengthen that cheerz. Altho I read Every Extend is more off a boss fight, is that right? I prefer shoot em ups - Side on or vertical rather than endless boss fights.

Kamui by Siter Skain. One of the best dojin shmups but it's no longer sold so it can be tough to find a full version.

Everything from Shanhai Alice(Zun): Embodiement of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, and Shoot the Bullet. Stunning manic/barrage style shooters. The boss battles are simply stunning. Great soundtracks are also a plus.

Samidare. Doesn't get the buzz it deserves but it's fantastic.

Hitogata Happa. Another vertical manic shoot em up. Murasame makes some amazing games and Hitogata is his best.

That's a pretty good sampling of the genre but there are tons of great japanese shoot em ups out there. Best place to find links to the demos is probably shoot the core, http://shootthecore.moonpod.com/PClinks1.html

Best place to buy original copies imho is, www.paletweb.com.

Kong: Ah yes, thanks for those, I've heard of spme like Perfect Cherry Blossom before. + thanks for the links.

Wow Parsec47 is nuts!

Bookmark this site. He has all the cool indy adventures and jap games.

Anything by Kenta Cho is good (just Google).

rRootage and Torus Trooper are probably his best efforts.

Parsec47 is an excellent tribute to Cave's arcade game Dangun Feveron. Try out Dangun if you ever get the chance. The best disco shoot em up ever!

Aleste2, try it in an MSX(2) emulator for instance..

Super Aleste on the SNES is awesome (I still love that game) but there was one on the GameCube a couple of years back which was better I believe.

It bagan with an "X" and was really quite stylised. The baddies were black and white and depending upon which baddy you wanted to shoot you had to use the corressponding colour missile/laser whatever.

2D foreground, 3D background - I just can't remember the name!

Infuriating !

IPete2.

Great some more suggestions thanks. I've heard of rRootage, so'll check that one out. I should have said PC-based shooters as I don't really want to faff around figuring out emulators, thanks.

I do have Ikaruga for GameCube, what a great game, pretty hard later on though. The whole polarity thing is very interesting.

Gabriel, thanks I got there every day anyway.

This site I visit also has tons of retro shooters:

Ikaruga - that's it!

Thanks it was baking my brain!

IPete2.

You NEED to buy a console to play these sorts of games.
I could give you 10 classics off the top of my head if you had a Playstation 2. :)

I do :-) and a GC with Ikaruga. On PS2 I have R-Type Final and Gradius III/IV and also Gradius V (much better but has stopped working recently sob).

That's how sony get ps2 sales....they're built to self destruct so you need to buy a new one.

Try this great game :

Cho Ren Sha 68K

Réno: Yeah it is great, I played that when Big10p recommended it but the music/sound screws up on my machine big time which is offputting :-(

My Fav is Dodonpathi ^^

wow...lots of good stuff here! mindless violence and tons of destruction, what more can you want...?

Sex ??

^_^

Speaking of Aleste, the Master System version (aka Power Strike) is mighty fine.

Well there are some great MEGADRIVE games.

I like Kenta Cho's stuff as well as Warning Forever. You could visit SHMUP-DEV for some free games too, we have some in the showcase.
Actually shmups are my fav since many of them have stunning and crisp pixel art.

IMHO, it appears that every other Turbo Graphic 16 (PC Engine) game is a shooter. Too bad most of them only appeared in Japan : Soldier Blade, Raiden, GunHead, Final Soldier, Super Star Soldier, and Blazing Lazers...and tons other. Hell, my Star Fighter Max game was based on all of them! But thank God for emulation...

Sex ??

Yah, but with the same girl gets boring after a while.....:P
