Nintendo DS over the internet

How is it? Does the internal software work well? How about games?

What I'm looking for is a way to chat and play games over the internet with my GF..is it possible?

Does any homebrew software work tha way as well?

Yes it does work well - Animal Crossing is great, Mario Kart too - others exist but we don't have them.

You get a friends code so you can find each other quickly, if you are in the same town then you can 'chat' by sending messages to each other via a menu.

If you are in different towns you have to 'send letters' they arrive outside you house in the post box on the left of your house.

Official games like Animal Crossing work really well (and AC is the best bet for chatting), and if you're thinking of MSN type stuff you will need to look into homebrew. (There is DS AIM and Beup, which is an MSN client).

My preferred method would be Animal Crossing since it is rather amusing, but it is quite a pain to get an online thing happening because both people need each-other's friend codes, one person needs their gate open and the other person needs to be looking at that precise moment.

I play Tetris DS online sometimes. Its good fun but it is very addictive so watch out for the old RSI. Also there seem to be a lot of really fast and ruthless players out there so I would only recommend it if you're reasonably good at Tetris already.

As for chatting, it might be worth mentioning that the pre-game menu screen in Metroid Prime Hunters actually lets you talk to your opponent via the microphone. I can't remember whether it lets you do that indefinitely though. Plus its one way at a time (like a walkie-talkie) so its not quite as good as a phone.

I find that Mariokart is pretty lame online. You can't communicate with other players and all the other players jerk and lag all over the place. Not ideal for a racing game.

Ugh, Tetris DS....so many hours lost playing that online, works a charm, but it's online play is very limited (either 2 players with no items, 4 players with items, or "Push" mode), but it works when it does, aside from the somewhat odd times where you do get a game setup, and the last 2 players in the list get cut-off before the actual game starts, requring you to wait again while the game gathers 3 others.


I think it has a 5-sec cap or something? Regardless though, you can only do that when playing a game with buddies (using registered friend codes), Nintendo doesn't want strangers talking with strangers I guess for safety reasons.

How is Resident Evil and Age of Empires?

Resident Evil is a faithful port of the PS1 original (which includes the original game setup, and a remixed version), so if you dont enjoy the tank-controls and sometimes-bad camera positioning for the areas, I wouldn't bother.

I had a good time playing it regardless though.....played #2 on the N64 back when is was new (never had a PS1), always wanted to play the first one.


No idea on Age of Empires, but it's been getting good ratings, problem for me is the only copies I've seen of it around my location is at a FutureShop 45min away from my location, and I only go there once in a blue moon. So have yet to pick it up and play here.

Metroid Prime Hunters, ACDS, Tetris are the best online games for the DS

get MPH for sure but getting online with it can be a pain
