Godaddy Hosting?

Anyone here have a site hosted with Godady.com?

They offer some mean hosting packages and I was just wondering if I should choose them over powweb for my next site.

They offer the following (below) for 2 years for around £150.

I have a couple of domains hosted with Godady and I've never had any problems. I'm hoping their hosting for websites is just as good.

I'll look around but I may end up buying hosting with them.

Their domain hosting is indeed good, but I've heard many, many bad stories about their web hosting. It's not on a par with their domain hosting, not even close.

If you're wanting to look for alternatives to PowWeb, and not wanting to spend a whole lot more money, then I'd say DreamHost would be much better. They get about as much praise as PowWeb ( which is a lot ) and the two of them seem to be the best of the shared hosting brigade.

This may sound dumb but I didn't know that you could transfer the domain from GoDaddy to powweb. After a bit of reading and research I found out that on one of my powweb accounts I had 2 domain credits available. I transfered the domain from Godaddy to powweb by changeging the DNS.

This should point the domain to my powweb account, No?

Have I done it right?

I've never had any "domain credits" ( nor am I even sure what they are ) but I have GlimmerGames.com registered with GoDaddy and hosted with PowWeb. I did it by setting the DNS in GoDaddy's control panel to point to PowWeb's domain servers and then paid PowWeb to set up their domain server to point to my site ( £15, one off, I think. )

When you say transferred, I'm not sure if you mean pointed to the DNS to them or transferred registration. You can probably both, but I think you mean it's registered with GoDaddy still but pointing to PowWeb hosting, and that's probably the best way to do it.

Log in to your powweb account, click the domains tab, scroll down a bit and you'll see a clickable link that says "Domain Credits".

Once you click on that it will open a new window and show you how many Domain Credits you have on your account. Domain Credits allow you to renew Domains, buy new domains or transfer domains free. So for instance if you wanted to register a new domain on your glimmrgames account you would choose the domain and when logged in it will ask you if you want to use our domain credit to pay for the Domain.



I changed the DNS to point to powwebs servers. I thought it would transfer. As long as it points to powweb then it's fine.

Ok yeah, you've done all you need to do. You've actually transferred registration from GoDaddy to PowWeb, which I didn't do. But it's the same price to do what you've done as it used to be to have them add the records to their domain name server, so it all works out the same in the long run and you've saved money by buying through GoDaddy. The only snag may ( will? ) be that when it comes to renewing the domain you will be paying PowWeb's prices instead of GoDaddy's.

Yeah That's OK. It works out to about 8 quid anyway for powweb domain renewals/registration. Gotta love the exchange rate. :)

My domain (xlsior.org) is hosted by godaddy, on their $3.someting/month plan... Haven't had any problems with it in the last year and a half, and never noticed any downtime for either web or email.

No regrets.

GoDaddy have terrible slow MySQL speeds.

I tried their hosting out a few months ago as a test to see what it was really like. With just one person (me) browsing around a forum, the response time was like 1000 were browsing.

General HTML pages with images were fine, but as soon as it connected to a database then speed plumeted.

I initially bought 3 months hosting as a test, but after a week of solid testing I dumped it.

Had www.dampes8n.com hosted and domain with Godaddy for about 2 years... They've been very helpful and even helped me learn PHP and MySQL... like.. gave me tips and junk...

There are some issues if you plan to try to meet their advertised maximums... But I've never come close to that, and been just fine...

Mainly.. if you aren't trying to host a site you -really- should be hosting on you own server somewhere... then you should be fine.... I wouldn't try to host... like... Coke.com or thebestpageintheuniverse or something like that....

You are asking for trouble if you are doing anything you expect to be a popular destination.. they are great for things like.... www.dampes8n.com

I use www.1and1.com (or www.1and1.co.uk for you brits) and their offering (the cheapest ones) are about half the space and bandwidth but significantly cheaper. I pay $45US per year for 2 domains with 50 gig space, 1000 emails, 25 mysql databases, php,perl,python support and 500gb of traffic per month.
