COBRA... it's Edjumactional!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/COBRA... it's Edjumactional!

OK so I have not had the greatest track record in my wait for Cobra... I have, in the past, called it vaporware... In fairness it did miss any sort of release date by almost a year now...

And now there is news...

http://www.squeakyduck.co.uk/

COBRA is now going to be an educational product.

Does this mean it won't compile? What does this mean exactly???

All knowledge is contained in this thread:

...until it vanishes. :o)

It means Idigicon thinks their best chance of selling it is to target a market that knows as little as possible about what they're buying.

it means forget about it

Correction to the above misinformation.

"CobraLE" is an Educational product.

"Edjumactional!"

Hmm. :)

Basically it's just another one of those things that WAS going to happen but which has so far done more or less everything else apart from actually happen. There's been hundreds upon thousands of them. A bit like the 3d module for Bmax really.

Whats meant to be so good about cobra? is it just a graphics engine?

For heaven's sake people, you'll give Graham grey hairs. He can't make it much plainer without saying something he's contractually obliged not to say just yet, particularly since he's always had the class not to pimp his own product on BRL's website.

Cobra LE is an educational edition of Cobra, and will be published by Idigicon.

Idigicon will not be publishing any other version of Cobra.

Read between the lines, will you?

This entire thing has given me more respect for Graham, and a lot less for Indigon.

@Graham, Good luck in what ever happens
@Indigon, Nice that at least now there is a copy of Grahams statement on your page.

Cobra is too late for me. Im firmly into Bmax + engine (Eliza), but an LEA Contract is nothing to cry about. And as Graham sort of said, this is a different version (Ie there is a "Full" version somewhere)

sNAkES on PlANE!...or maybe jst programmery snakes..
anyway, he should be releasing this to match up with
the movie :p
...or if he wants to be more specific, he could package the
dev system with "Cobra" the movie, with mr stalone..

ok..ill shutup - was bored, + waiting to the nice phone people
to disconnect me for being poor :] :p

The full version of Cobra is coming - no need for anyone to worry about the 'LE' version/Idigicon/schools, anything along those lines.

Idigicon sell BlitzBasic - BRL do not sell BlitzBasic - BRL, sell something better. All will become clear soon.

Trust "puki" on this.

Strange

I'm student and still, I've never heard of Idigicon on our mailgroups and boards.
Must be an extremely strong presence.

I bet that presence is lower than the hatred presence of it on the Blitz boards ... ^^

But they are right at least. Its a good point to start because at schools their only potential concurrent is present: DBP.
All real programmers use Blitz, PB or C

PS: Stupid question. Wasn't it mentioned that cobra is OO? If so, check Screen11 and explain me why there is code that looks extremely like Blitz3D and especially: totally non OO

@Puki

To be honest - I think some of the textures used in the Cobra demos are poor (have you looked at the Cobra gallery?). It's amazing how much difference a good texture can make.

EDIT - having said that - there are only 3 or 4 that make me cringe.

The thing about that thread is that it is mainly DB moderators discussing it.

Until people see the full version then there will be doubts.

Methinks another announcement is coming very soon.

lol - whats a real programmer?
- someone that assumes to know everything + has a bloated
ego? - cant say i know many people that have used
pb..and i know only a handful of pro coders that mess
about in blitz..mostly for fast prototyping or small personal
fun projects..

anyhoO, im waiting to see what the 3d module has to offer,
from what little ive heard and seen, it should be kinda
special.. til then im sticking with torque...its a good learning
experience..

he he. I have to laugh at threads like the DB one...
Blitz3d stuff can look pretty rough until let someone like Filax loose on it.

It's like saying quill and paper are better than MSword because William Shakespear because classics where written with the former!!

Ah well.

Unfortunately we are a society that values image above all else so its inevitable that people judge your language from the screenshots however wrong that may be.
If I were you I would commision an artist to do some decent ones - after all - you can afford it now ;)

Cobra will look good when I load my Oblivion geometry in.

Yeh, looks like my graphical dominance is on its way.

In fact, I must load that stuff into DBPro, then go and dominate their forums too.

after all - you can afford it now ;)

I wish!!

I've read this "Shakespeare" book and I think a good spellings checker would have helped.

Can you leak some release date to us, puki?

I have budget this month and tend to have it a try.

22 posts and no one has flamed me for mentioning COBRA yet... Though in truth I am interested in it now... very... when Grahm releases it I wuyld like to see a small set of samples matching DB/ BMax / CCOBRA LE / COBRA in terms of coding ease... framerate and SS for how good looks... Puki you can do this!

> no one has flamed me for mentioning COBRA yet

Perhaps people have got bored of arguing over trivial matters.
Besides, it sounds like you're disappointed there wasn't any.

I'm pleased to see that we CAN all behave like grown ups for a change :)

Haha that link really made me laugh... especially as it was a couple of mods talking... clueless...

I'll almost definitely stick with Max (confirmed fanboy talking here), but very best of luck to you GrahamK. Respect for making no attempts to tout your wares on BRLs site.

But they are right at least. Its a good point to start because at schools their only potential concurrent is present: DBP.

My highschool uses a crappy "beginners" programming language called Turing for the 10-11th grade, which seems to be good enough for them to teach the students the basics of programming (for-loops, arrays, graphics, etc), problem is that it's extremely slow if you want to make a game in it, which I guess is another plus for the school using it. :P
(tried to make Break-Out in it, no go, asked my teacher if I could do my little "project" in Blitz3d, made a space invaders clone running at full speed...., gotta love how compact the B3d program is with the core files on a USB stick)

Then for 12th grade we used Java (love all the language features it has, but I still find it crap for games)....

Guess what I'm saying is that unless Cobra shows itself off as an all-purpose programming utility that has its own set of books behind it for student references into beginning programming, I dont think schools will take much an interest into it.

Unless they're aiming at colleges or higher-level education systems then a high-school?

@Genexi2,

In UK "Lea conract" Normally means for pre-16's because of the way the funding works. (But this doesnt mean anything, just letting you know)
