Check out the qt7 showreel -this is awesome stuff, for get games, let's make movies! :)

I just watched a 2 minute video create a hillside full of various species of plants and trees, using a "paint your plants in place" airbrush type technique, then recolour some of them, make a clearing and add some flowers!

A couple of things

Can it handle waves breaking on a shallow beach such that the water moves up the beach and doesn't just clip the ground?

And

Can it model a stream turning to a river as it flows down an incline?

But anyway, it does look good - looks like they might have licensed the new Terragen2 engine (my conjecture). However the real test for software like this, is how easy it is to model a real world location (which normally means being able to import geo-referenced datasets)...

MadJack,

There's a video on some Vue 5 content which shows a desert island with water lapping up the beach, it was a distant shot though so no idea how good it looks close up. It is quite odd to be so excited about a product like this as my PC is a bit underpowered for the demo.

I haven't seen a stream turn into a river, but I have seen some mighty big ocean waves and underwater stuff looks awesomely real too.

Check out the videos there are some amazing features, spectral atmospheres, godrays/fingers, volumetric clouds, ventilators (to make helicopters blow back tress and plants etc), area lights, incredible daylight lighting, the list is almost endless.

If I had £411 now I would love to buy Vue 5 infinite now and get the upgrade to Vue 6 Infinite free when it is launched!

Downloaded the vid, and Quicktime in its usual sucky way tells me I have a 'bad public atom'(?).

This is Quicktime's way of telling me I need to upgrade to V7.

Anyway, I'll check it out when the software comes out.

At present I use Visual Nature Studio for professional output.

but it's looking a bit long in the tooth when it comes to nice output.

Doh! How dare QT keep you from the visions contained within the showreel?!!!!

If you can find a way to view it - it is well worth it - you'll be impressed if not amazed. Well I was anyway.

Ok, have had a look at the movie.

It's impressive - but then I'm also reminded that the Truespace6 demo reel 'rocked'. Now though, I wish I'd never bought it ;-)

Also, I've found that when creating real world locations, I often need to be able to have full control over the finest details in a scene (as these are often what the client will notice first). In my experience, the more hobbyist terrain vis packages are very good at using a few overall settings to create good looking example terrains, but don't offer the level of detail needed for real world modelling.

MadJack,

Yes at the end of the day this is only a natural environment package (with some extras granted) but if you move the scene into 3DS Max or Maya or Xsi or Lightwave (via the additional plugin) I wonder if you can tweak until your heart's content?

This new version does allow what seems incredible control over the eco systems for example, you can place individual trees, plants, grass clumps, re colour them, resize, orientate them etc all using your pressure sensitive pen and tablet.

I guess the problem for me is that I want that good stuff, but I can't produce it myself and for a fraction of the cost of paying someone else to develop it for me, this programme does generate more than acceptable results.

I can't buy just yet but I shall keep an eye on it for the future.
