How does the speed of animated meshes compare between B3d and bmax with a 3rd party engine?
B3D vs. Bmax (with engine)
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/B3D vs. Bmax (with engine) Which 3rd party engine are we talking about here?
any... doesnt matter really as long as they are under 200 bucks
you need to specify which engine because each is different
Well someone (Possibly Mike since he probably has a few and some of the other guys too...) should get together... create a set of three scenes and make a walkthrough noting FPS and other stuff... you know increasing triangles on a midline machine...

Theoretically, that's a good idea.
The problem is that different engines have different strong points and that isn't always well represented by polygon counts.

what about 30 copies of an animated character?
Can b3d do thirty copies of an animated character?
Since B3D includes a 3D engine created by Mark Sibly it is only fair to compare it with the same offering in Bmax, so we'll have to wait (until Christmas?) and make the comparison when 3DMax module is out. One thins is sure. 3D module will fit into Bmax better than any other 3D engine out there...

What!!!!!!
Why on earth is it only fair to wait for Marks? (Im assuming from that, that you think d3b would win.
And I would like you to deffend this
Cos its an oop languge, so it dosnt matter who writes it (I think in fact that Simons MiniD3b will most seem to fit with Bmax, cos all b3d users will reconise it)

Why do people buy BlitzMax when they don't want to use its most important feature...
I bet it would be more unfair if that design decision to make a highly expandable potentially low-level language turned out to be completely pointless.
:(
Feel free to try these things!
The language was built for you to be able to use 3rd-party 3d engines like Irrlicht or Ogre.
Anyway, regarding 30 animated meshes at once, I still can't help you.
Your best bet is to go through the different available solutions for BlitzMax (there's a list of the noteable ones somewhere in the BlitzMax forums) and try to recreate your scene in each one.
If you find it too difficult to create what you want, the engine is either not suited to your project or poorly designed. (Or just too complicated to be worth your time).
You'll end up with only a couple engines to choose from after throwing out the others in fits of rage, at which point the choice should be obvious :)
Note that lots of these engines are still works in progress.
The straight wrappers are quite good, though, once you figure out how they work. (*Sigh* It's all a bit too complicated for my little head. SOW does well at keeping it simple, though)

What is Bmax's most important feature?
The fact it can access "mainstream" engines
I thought it was cross-platform compatbility
Sow is coming along really nicely and that has GPU assisted skinning weights so it shoudl be quite fast. The next version 1.3 thats in the late stages for development also has imposters for distant object.
Chris just got Sow which uses the ogre3d engine running in a Bmax window with MaxGUI in windowed mode which is pretty awesome :)
