HL2 City Block Template

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/HL2 City Block Template

Half-Life 2 never really let the player explore City 17 like I had hoped. The majority of the game took place in some kind of underground linear tunnel. I created a city block template with the idea that different users could each design a city block, then stitch them together in a single map to make a large explorable portion of City 17.

When I run the map in Half-Life 2, some faces are missing, or have the wrong texture applied. Could someone please take a look at this file and tell me what the problem is?

Thank you.

Good idea!

I hope it works out nicely :)

The biggest problem is the misuse of the skip texture. You place hint on the faces that are to be broken, and skip on the faces that are ignored for a brush that is to break a visleaf up.

I modified it, replacing all skip texures with nodraw textures, and removed the excess skybox (dont use hollow, its dirty)

I didn't test it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Technical difficulties aside, City 17 is a sprawling European-type city and a map based on regular American-style city blocks is unlikely to have the same feel. Apart from that its a nice idea.

Thanks, that works.

Obviously you can't make an infinite level, but I think the engine can handle more open designs than what the HL2 designers have allowed so far.
