The only possible Community project!

Okay we've tried to program games and apps as a community before. But I have a better idea!

Lets start another website like BlitzCoder (or codersworkshop RIP for now)
One where we can submit projects. Possibly host some screenies. Get some forums. And maybe some sort of private message system.

I ask this as a community project because I don't have to time or $$$ to do it on my own. :\

Any body else think this is a good idea?

What's wrong with this forum? We have a gallery, showcase, toolbox, content place and most importantly of all it's the official forum so no need to worry about the warez kiddies.

The problem with most community projects I've seen is that they're all too ambitious and lead in a non-"plugin" safe manner imo, it's gotta be simple, that's why Rob's little "Jump Around" game did so well.

Adding a Tutorials/Articles section like the Code Archives would make it perfect, in fact.


I have an idea: A module for BlitzMax that makes it easy to create robots for the game RealTimeBattle, which is much like that bot battle game community project here except that it was finished :P
The great thing about it is that it's written so that any programming language can be used to develop robots for as long as it can compile to the necessary plaform. (Unfortunately, Windows is currently unsupported except through Cygwin).
There are a few ways for these robots to operate, explained here.
I am trying very very slowly to get the Standard In Blocks method working and it probably will once I stop being lazy. (It's definietly possible via native BlitzMax).
I'm not sure about the two more complicated sounding ways, but someone else may know how they are done...

The important part is developing a module which uses these functions so that people can create their robots with simple functions, such as StartRobot(), Rotate() and Shoot() and is hopefully tidy enough to easily work with any of the three input methods.

We don't have a showcase. We have a forum. Showcases are awesome and we need one. Where you can rate games, sort by genre, sort by best rated, or most downloads. See other showcases by this author, View All My Showcases, etc.

What I'm talking about is the easy use of showcases that CW and BlitzCoder had. And the function to message with other members privatly. Making it easier to share ideas and such. And since I hear not much more work is getting put into this site or B3D. (stupid BMAX stealing attention) I thought just make another one with the ideas of these true loyal members.

This site is perfectly fine. But that doesn't mean there can't be more.

P.S. look at GameDev.net for inspiration.

i like the showcase forum here but i just miss the one from BlitzCoder so much

People (including me) are crying for a Maxgui-forum for ages now. Setting this up would be a absolute no problem and it would be done within minutes... do you really think this site will get a Blitzcoder-style showcase (I loved it, too), if the much simpler requests are ignored?

I'd be happy to work on a showcase/tutorial/forum site, whether anyone would use it is another matter entirely.

Yeah, I feel somewhat out of place a few times talking about different languages to code games or any other software programs in, such as Visual Studio or DarkBASIC, or Bloodshed Dev-C++, which I code in quite often, too. To have some sort of spinoff topic forums for other programming languages like VS 2005, would probably help for those who use Blitz as well as others (heaven forbid anyone think of using DarkBASIC around here). However, Microsoft-based languages seem to be popular choices around here, to a point. A forum for C#, C++, VB, and J# programmers would be worth the while.

We don't need an off-topic forum.

This is a programming forum therefore its for chat about programming/computers/technology.

If you want to talk about god and politics then I'm sure there are specialist forums around aimed at those specific subjects.

I'm used to there being no Off-Topic forum now anyway. I've come to terms with it. Also, if you looked at the amount of crap posted over at CW's OT forum then you'll understand why an Off-Topic forum can bring a website to it's knees.

We just got a new MAXGUI forum on here so for the time being I think thats enough. If you want off-topic, go join Power Mousey and the Crack gang over at CW.

SIMPLY, say whether you would like to help with a project like this. If there are enough people we can start it. And ethics aren't a problem because this is the internet! People can start new websites if they want.

The reason for it is that the Blitz mods tend to go crazy when something isn't blitz related being posted here...

I stand against the OFF TOPIC forum... It is a huge time waster and full of mindless drivel. I missed the OT here a great deal when it when the way of the Dodo Bird, now I don't... there is enough OT in the programming forums to make me happy!
