Help me pick out some PS2 games!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Help me pick out some PS2 games!

Well, since I have a tremendous amount of free time these days, and recently acquired a Playstation2, Could any of you great kind gracious(someone hand me a shovel, fast!) people of blitzbasic.com share any of your thoughts on some good PS2 games?

Any genre is fine, but I'm going to hunt down anyone that suggests Grand Theft Auto.

I dont even know where to begin....so for now I'll just say that you cant go wrong with 90% of the Greatest Hits labelled PS2 games out at the moment.
(pick-up God of War asap, and why I said 90% for Greatest Hits, well, Driv3r & The Getaway only received it due to good marketting, but the games themselves were horrible imo)

[EDIT] Should also highly recommend you pick up "Guitar Hero" if you're into rhythm games.
(get the package that comes with the peripheral, the game isn't fun to play without the plastic-guitar controller)

I liked killzone a lot.

Any game that contains violence, lots of violence.

-Splinter Cell Double Agent
-Yakuza
-Scarface, The World Is Yours
-Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas
-Grand Theft Auto - Liberty City Stories
-Resident Evil 4

Well, if you want my advice, catch any good game for the PS2 that's only exclusive to consoles, and/or to the PS2. Unfortunately, quite a few console games are just ports of what you can pick up for the PC, and the PC versions usually wind up the better option of some of them. So, that may limit your selection a bit, wouldn't you say?

No PS2 collection is complete without Resident Evil 4, probably the best game of the past few years IMO.

Beyond that, I'd pick out Star Ocean - Till The End of Time, Tales of Legendia, Grandia 3, Suikoden Tactics, Nocturne, Disgaea, Arc the Lad - Twilight of the Spirits and Shadowhearts - Covenant.

I could easily name another 20 or 30, as I've bought a huge number of great games for PS2, but those stand out at the moment.

So, that may limit your selection a bit, wouldn't you say?

On XBox, sure, but not on PS2. PS2 has hundreds of exclusive titles.

Still, XBOX owns!

@skyfire1 - get all of the games listed below:

Easy to find:

God Of War
Tekken 5
Shadow Of Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistance <-- Consumed my life!
Devil May Cry 3
Beyond Good and Evil
Katamari Damacy

Hard to find:

Rez
Gitaroo Man

Consume them all before they consume you!!!

Yeah, maybe even the Game Cube version of RE4 is a little better from the PS2. At least the Cube version of that would be a bit easier to play.

wow, I've played so many great games on my PS2, but I wonder if some of the old games would stand up when compared against modern ones, things like: Devil May Cry, and Gran Turismo 3, Jak and Daxter etc.

Anyway, here's some:

Jake and Daxter 1 and 2
Ratchet and Clank 1,2,3
Those Star Wars Jedi StarFighter ones are cool.
Tekken Tag Tournament
All the Resident Evil games
RType Final
Gradius V
God of War
Sly Raccoon
Rayman (several)
Beyond Good and Evil
Red Faction 1 and 2
Onimusha 1,2,3
Final Fantasy X
Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 1&2
Burnout 1,2,3
Maximo 1,2
Silent Hill 2,3
Spy Hunter
SSX tricky
The Thing
Time Crisis 2
Wipeout Fusion
Zone of the Enders
Metal Gear Solid 2,3
Devil May Cry 3
Broken Sword - Sleeping Dragon

+ many more

All above games were really good.

Only games I can recommend that havn't been mentioned yet:

Kingdom Hearts - best action rpg ever. Except for maybe KH2 which isn't out in Aus yet =]

SSX 3 - there is a more recent one too which I havn't played yet.

EyeToy - all the Play games are great for social occasions.

Gran Turismo 4 for obvious reasons.

Any of the Tony Hawks games. (because it's fun listening to Elissa Steamer grunting when she falls over)

Kingdom Hearts, Medal of Honor, Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, SoulCalibur 3 are all good and the price have gone down the $20 or less

Yeah, my personal advice would be on the Greatest Hits shelf, or the used games, as with most consoles. IMHO, I'd go Kingdom Hearts and maybe Shadow of the Colossus myself. Gran Turismo 4 always does justice enough, consoles these days do seem to push driving games more than anything. Just keep your eyes open for some hot titles for bargain prices, it's a smart way to play...

I forgot one major one. Make sure that you play ICO.

Hmm so many good PS2 games to choose from, if you had a chipped PS2 your game selection would be practically tripled. My personal recommendations of the day would be. (In this order)

Resident Evil 4
Katamari Damacy/We Love Katamari (Buy both)
Gradius V
Shadow Of Collosus
Silent Hill 3 (and 2)
Metal Gear Solid 3

The PS2 version of RE4 is better because it has more features, the gfx are only slightly worse than the Gamecube version.

My faves have all been mentioned already, but here's another set of votes for:

Rez
Ico
Beyond Good and Evil
Shadow of Colossus
Viewtiful Joe

Check out Singstar if you've got a few friends who are up for karaoke. And if you like music based games, Frequncy and / or Amplitude are quite nice too.

I'll big up Ico too, I just couldn't remember it's name last night and kept wanting to write Oni.

I had viewtiful Jow on the Gamecube and if the PS2 one is anything like it, then yes, get it.

Oh yeah, also get Guitar Hero.

Can't forget Guitar Hero, that's one that I keep hearing about all the time. They're coming out with a sequel just in time for the holidays. Also, Dance Dance Revolution would be a wise choice. Whatever you do, do not, and I repeat, DO NOT grab anything for the Eye Toy. That thing can be a complete pain in the butt, or at least with me.

Yep, it's just you. =]
