Paying someone to code a 2d fighter: Please Read:

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Paying someone to code a 2d fighter: Please Read:

I am paying for programmer(s) to code a blitzmax-based 2d fighter.

In terms of the graphical aspect of the game, existing 2d fighter sprites from marvel/capcom/streetfighter vs series can be used as well as stages. I will be supplying ALL stages, artwork and character sprites in any format you want (.bmp, .png, .pcx) as well as the stage music and special effects sounds.

What I am basically looking for:

- An arcade-type Marvel Vs Capcom style game with online support. The game engine could read off of individual bitmap images for sprites, pcx files, or use any other format.
- I would like realistic parallex stages, multi layered and if possible the ability to shatter stages to reveal extended stages if a player is knocked away.
- Online capability. This is a must.

Edited: I have already found a very capable team of coders. The offer is no longer available, thanks for expressing interest in the project.

How much are you paying?

All licenced?

Sorry but this all sounds very peculiar. The fact that you're 'doing business' through a hotmail address is setting a few alarm bells ringing, too.

This is a non-commercial profit-free endeavor. The graphics i want to include in the game are licensed marvel characters, capcom characters, streetfighter characters. I am basically trying to emulate an existing fighting game engine called M.U.G.E.N which does not have online support as well as other nice features.

I can negotiate with prices on msn or aol instant messenger or voice chat (ventrilo) with said programmer, if the game is promising you can look at anywhere from $1000 to several thousands.

Yeah, right. ;)

As i said the graphics are copyright. I really need to get this off the ground. I've tried C++ community forums and private coders but I havent been satisfied with the outcome so I decided to try blitzmax.

If your a notable programmer (judging by the number of your posts you seem to be) and want to give it a try msn me, i'm online most of the time

Whats that mean

What do you expect exactly?
Main problem is that you will most likely need to pay 2 people because for a 2D fighter, a designer for the graphics is needed as they won't be available for said scenario in a directly usable manner.

Without any further specs what you expect etc there is no real use of this request or job offer. Nobody wastes several hours without knowing what is wanted and especially what is payed for it. (calc with 30-50$ per hour work on the project when you think about what you expect)

I estimate you can forget about your 30-50$ per hour, dreamz :P

Perhaps add a zero and rename it to 'per finished project' ^_^

I already stated in the first i made that graphics (Characters/stages) are already provided. I cant list a pay figure because I dont know what the coder is capable of producing. Payment would not be hourly as we're not working in an office. It would be a sum amount mid way through the project and at the end also.

So far three people have contacted me from this forum, one of them looks tobe very promising. The offer is still up to anyone.

Well to be honest I could probably program you a 2d fighting engine better than the capcom counter-parts. But If I were to do that, I would do it for myself, and then hire an artist to do the graphics. I can do decent graphics aswell, but it wouldnt make any sense trying to do both.

Now let me ask you, what role do you play in this ? It sounds like you are just asking somone to do the work for you ? Why not just program it yourself ? There is no promise of any return from this project ?

The fact you are using ripped graphics instantly flashes warning signs left, right, forwards, backwards and above or below. Basically, this sounds extremely dodgy. Perhaps that is why you didnt get a good response on your previous attempts.

I can only you suggest that you put forward your proposal in a different way next time.

oh and
I can negotiate with prices on msn or aol instant messenger or voice chat (ventrilo) with said programmer, if the game is promising you can look at anywhere from $1000 to several thousands.

...

This is a non-commercial profit-free endeavor.

These two statements are in direct contradiction of each other.

There's two reasons why I would like to use ripped graphics instead of original ones.

1- Time consuming. Using ripped graphics would cut the time in half and half again.

2- Simplicity. I enjoy Marvel characters, and being a non-commercial game why would i opt for something I dont like?

Those are the reasons why I would like to use existing characters. And I did get positive responses, all three who have contacted me expressed interest in coding.

I am a total beginner in blitzmax or any other coding language, its just not what i do thats why I cant code it myself. If you can do it and want to, then contact me because I am paying for work.

Tell you what, you release all you graphics, and Im sure someone would write a 2d fighter game

Did you get permission from Marvel or Capcom to use their material in this game of yours?

The company does not sell or profit off the games that the graphics were wripped from so using them for non-comercial purposes is entirely legal.

No it isn't. It's entirely *illegal*. Not that the legality or illegality is an issue for the coder, but it does suggest that he's entering into a risky proposition if he's dealing with someone who isn't aware of obvious legal issues like this.

Entirely legal huh? Where do you get your facts from, the internet???

I'd be tempted to contact him as I do alot of contracting on games, however the 2 flags include :
1.This is a non-commercial profit-free endeavor.
2.The company does not sell or profit off the games that the graphics were wripped from so using them for non-comercial purposes is entirely legal.

A. If it's profit-free, what is your motivation to pay for it to be done?
B. All someone has to do is inform Bethesda of Puki and he will have 4 or 5 "ceese and desist" letters at his front door. (good thing we all like him).

Ripping gfx is illegal unless you have written (written) permission from the gfx owners. Commercial or non-commercial, it's still stealing! Tell yourself whatever you wish but don't miss that fact as a judge wouldn't overlook it either regardless of rationalization you give him. If your going to do non-commercial non-profit, then contact the respected owners and ask for their permission. If they say no, then it's probably for a good reason.

So far three people have contacted me from this forum, one of them looks tobe very promising. The offer is still up to anyone.

Well good luck with them. If they are that quick to offer their expertise, then they can have it I guess. Personally if I were offering a contract, I would take those who are more weiry than those who are willing to just jump in as those willing to just jump in are also the quickest to jump out when the road gets tough (or something comes up in their lives). The last few contracts I did turned out pretty well (fun games), however that doesn't mean I would let my guard down on a fishy sounding offer.

Lastly
If your a notable programmer (judging by the number of your posts you seem to be)

Wouldn't that make Red the most notable programmer of all of us?

[EDIT] I see there's a post in Blitzmax Programming and Blitz3d Programming forums as well..... Spamming our boards with your offer will get you in trouble. Most who come here pop into the General discussion at least once to check 'current events' (IE Red's next "guess the engine" thread). Having it there is your best bet to get attention.

I've contacts at the Marvel company through a friend of mine, how 'bout i'll have them keep an eye on this. Because you're breaking the law at many points.

Sounds great; if it were properly licensed I'd say yes, as it's not I say no. Sorry, but good luck anyway.

I come from the modding community, and anything that has used Marvel characters in the past was shut down. Mods do not make money so your theory is incorrect.

I want to hire someone to build me a Mercedez Benz Latest series. I'm willing to pay £2000 to get it done. Oh! By the way! I ripped all the materials for the car from another car. When it's built I'm not going to sell it because in non commercial.

:/

Deal! I'll email you about my skills. I have made a lot of posts, like 2000, on some Mercedes forum so that would already mean i'm very skilled.

lol, alright, you guys are being a bit tough on the guy..... I'm sure he really wants to do the project (for whatever reason) and just doesn't have all his figures/facts straight yet. Ridiculing him isn't going to do anything but get this thread locks, or worse, deleted....

Can we keep it civil please?

I agree completely with Grey Alien as I'd say yes as well if it weren't so sketchy in the 'ripped content' department.

I just think that he really wants to have a mod of the fighting game Marvel vs Capcom that has easy to edit game media and can be played over the internet. And he probably wants to build a community around it. He wants it so badly that he is willing to pay for it, the thing that sucks for him is that it is just totally illegal. Marvel won't allow it. He's better off having someone create new game characters that do not exist.

It would be a sum amount mid way through the project and at the end also.

Thats me out then. I don't get involved with "you'll get something half way through" promises. It pretty much never happens.

This is a non-commercial profit-free endeavor

So where are the funds coming from to pay for all this then? - I seriously doubt you'll be paying $1000's out of your own pocket for no good reason.

The company does not sell or profit off the games that the graphics were wripped from so using them for non-comercial purposes is entirely legal.

First off, its 100% illegal and secondly, by *company* I assume you are refering to yourself as you keep saying "I am paying for".

I know this forum has rules but I have to say you're living in a dream world and talking absolute bollocks and I hope no body on this forum wastes their time on this hoping to get paid.

Marvel doesn't read blitzbasic.com
There are many fighting engines already, not in max. I used to play one of Dragon Ball that had hundreds of characters, and people would just add more and more characters. I forgot the name of it, but I saw many Marvel characters on other games using the same engine.

If its illegal to do such a thing then why is there a world-wide known game engine known as mugen where people can add in any various characters or screen packs that were wripped from an untold amount of console/arcade roms/screens ??
Link: http://www.maximummugen.hpg.ig.com.br/faq_mugen.html

ah, yes! thanks for giving me the url! now I can download it again and keep playing! thanks.

I see Mario rip-offs on bb.com all the time, I see no difference between a Mario and Marvel fighting game that utilizes their media. However, the Mario games are like "cool" and the Marvel one is like "that is stealing man, that's wrong"

Ahh, my mistake. I guess it must also be ok to download movies and games, copy DVD's, copy games, because there is software available to do it. Yes, piracy must be 100% legal if you have software which allows you to do such things. Silly, silly me.

Marvel, IT IS ILLEGAL to use copyrighted material without permission. I can't say it in any more basic terms than that.

Forget it. He's not gonna listen. Just let him make his game.

Here, Marvel, read :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.G.E.N

Pay particular attention to all the references to "dubious legality" and "technically illegal" and that.

Then go ahead and waste thousands of dollars on something that WILL be shut down when it's finished. There's nothing more to say here. If you don't believe us then email the company itself.

Regarding m.u.g.e.n.:

What i really like about this list is that sometimes there pop up things i've never heard of... :O)

However, the Mario games are like "cool" and the Marvel one is like "that is stealing man, that's wrong"

heheh....don't forget all the sonic ones....

Just because you can do it doesn't make it legal. I can smash somebodies face in with a baseball bat I bought legally. It doesn't mean it's legal to do so. Ok a bit of an extreme example but a valid one. Also if this kind of thing was legal the City of Heroes creators wouldn't have had lawyers all over them just because a few players made wolverine clones using their software.

no offense this sounds very illegal, basically the same as using ROMs

if you are taking all the sprites and simply reprogramming the game for the PC is just as ilegal as ROMs

it seems nintendo knows of these fan made games but don't care since they are just fans and not making any money off of the games. i even saw a remake of TLOZ on the PC with the ability to play player-made quests. it was shown on techtv where you know someone from nintendo would have seen it and they did nothing because the group making it was making it for no profit and as a tribute to the greatest game on the NES

He wants a game engine just like M.U.G.E.N and wants to gain worldwide fame with it just like the authors of M.U.G.E.N. And he probably wants to make money off of it with website advertisements and stuff like that.

I estimate you can forget about your 30-50$ per hour, dreamz :P

On a regular, small project, yes.
But in this case, an open fighting engine with many extras is asked for including Online play and mysql highscore. Thats nothing you pull out finger in 30 hours. Especially not as you will need someone for graphics as I don't think all the needed graphics can be ripped. All marvel fighting games I know are very basic, at best around Street Fighter if not even worse. So nothing for combo - counter - break additions and the like.

If you know someone who is programming a project like that for 300-500$, let me know.

"At best around StreetFighter if not even worse"

I hope your talking about the first SF here as I still regard, like many other 2D fighting fans, SF 2 to be the best 2D fighter there is even after all these years.

Jason.

I second that QuickSilva

Mortal combat 2. (But intertestingly they were direct period comptitors). So secend bast was SF2

If I loved marvel/street fighter so much and wanted online support. I'd spend $1000 of that money you got laying around on a playstation 3 (when it arrives) which will probably have blue tooth & internet capability anyways. It's likely a new streetfighter type game would be released sometime after it, costing you around $100. So after spending $1100, you can game youself silly with your mates, have some spare cash for booze and not be sued. :)

Just out of interest, I asked a friend whose law firm deals with copyright / trademark issues...

This is the question I put :

Imagine I acquire some Marvel comic character images (perhaps scanned from actual comics), and I use them in a game I make on the computer where they feature prominently in the action, which I then put up on my website as a freebie for all?

Would they (Marvel) care about this since I wasn't earning any money from anything?
Or would they be happy for some free publicity?

and the reply...

Bottom line...

You will get into trouble. . Even though you are not SELLING the program per se... you are using the characters..... so its classic trade mark & copyright infringement.... if they do do anything - it would probably be to get an interdict against you / write a letter of demand / cease and desist letter to you.... i was however told that costs only become an issue once legal proceedings are actually instituted.... so as long as they don't do that, you could just remove it from your site... but see there is always a risk that someone could find the program on the net, and exploit it and start using it for their own financial gain, so MARVEL can't very well allow that.... so its a bit iffy at best.

Oh, and they don't need the free publicity....;-)

So I say... go for it !!!

Is your friend related to Red Oktober?

I stopped on the way to work, stuck my head out of the car window and asked a Lollipop Lady the same question and she replied...

Bottom line...
You will get into trouble.

:)

Thanks for all the negative feedback, while i do agree with 99% of you that my project IS illegal, it is also HARMLESS. If anythign it is drawing more fans to Marvel. I would like to draw everyone's attention to the HUNDREDS and possibly THOUSANDS of websites using marvel sprites in the form of animations (gif files), banners, even MODIFYING colors on sprites which is a lot worse than just using them. Marvel should go and shut down every one of those websites instead of trying to attack me instead.

On the positive side I have found a team of coders to make my project, the total cost being higher than what most of you would expect and I am ready to dish it out. I guess you can just call me a die hard fan, but the project is being worked on moreso because nothing of its nature is available yet (and possibly ever).

I wont be charging to download the game, but it will only have online capability so you would have to register an account to play. There are no offline modes as all character data is stored server-side.

Maybe i'll see some of you playing it in 2007, who knows. Take care.

Did you get this team of coders before or after posting this?

http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/posts.php?topic=62688

:)

You are so not going to bring this to completion

This has given me an idea, you could make the engine with some very simple character graphics, and make it easy to use others for example those marvel ones. This way someone can even make their own characters for the games.

the project is being worked on moreso because nothing of its nature is available yet
That could be because Marvel either won't licence their characters, or ask too high a price for the use of their registered trademarks. Do the maths.

"You are so not going to bring this to completion

H&K "

is this suposed to be a threat?

mind your own business maybe? thats the exact attitude that makes me just quit this board/community. I got what i came for, thanks anyway.

And yeah this project will be complete in a few months. Ill be hosting on big lan server, which i own. No public IPs will be allowed to connect which means you have no access to the website or server and neither does anyone else. Good day.

> but it will only have online capability so you
> would have to register an account to play.
> There are no offline modes as all character

So when are going to post the:-

"Paying someone to code an online capacity server: Please Read:"

thread?

The thing is Capcom have been making 1 on 1 fighters since the early 1990's and have like 50 of them in their portfolio, your game is gonna be inferior before you even start!

Not to mention that the servers I go into, people are at this very moment playing games like Marvel VS Capcom online (and other CAPCOM games) using MAME that they just downloaded, and FOR FREE. Good luck with your ambitious project, you're gonna need it :)

i found my design team as i stated before and dont need any help or criticism from this board so this thread could be locked for all i care.

No public IPs will be allowed to connect which means you have no access to the website or server and neither does anyone else.
Then isn't the whole thing just a waste of time anyway? :D

Oh well, at least "you're" the one paying the money. :)

PS "And yeah this project will be complete in a few months."

No project *EVER* will be completed in a few months. LOL!

Can we play "Let's see who can make him post just one more time"? :)
Seriously, though the request wouldn't have been sneared at so much if it wasn't using ripped graphics. Maybe just a bit of money to get somebody to design and create some new superheros.I know it won't have the intitial apeal of the Marvel or DC universe but it would have less chance of being closed down.

To Enay:
I've been on Kaillera and MAME since 1997, and believe me when I say everyone will STOP playing MVC or any other 2d fighter on mame once I hit the road with this.

Since I am leaving this board this would be my last post, i wish to gloat in my success of using pirated/illegal/commercial software to make money:

In May 2002 I ran a RAGNAROK game server using the official server software (website http://iro.ragnarokonline.com/). In the start I had about 50 users in the first month which escalated to roughly 1400-1600 users within 6 months. The game server ran for roughly 16 months in total and I accumulated roughly $250,000 u.s.d and that is the profit figure (after webhosting and server renting costs).

How did i make the money? Did i charge people to play per month like the retail official servers do? NO.

I simply offered in-game items for donations, items that would significantly boost the player's strength. Donations ranged from $5 u.s.d to $100 u.s.d for a single game item.

Since that project I have hosted other numerous MMORPG games such as Risk Your Life 1 and 2, Lineage II C1, C2 and C4, A3 Online, Mu Online, RF Online, and World of Warcraft. The total profit from these ventures taht i accumulated (including ragnarok) is roughly $760,000 u.s.d.

Now I am no millionare, but as you can see I am well off and can afford to finance a 2d online fighting game project. I will be making money off the game too, just as I have for the mmorpg game servers i mentioned above. I have an extensive track record for running game servers and a great user base that knows me by my 'trademark' name that I earned for myself.

If you think this is all a hoax you can simply visit the forums which provide all these commercial MMORPG game server files to host (some including source code)

Im sure some of you will want to have this forum shut down but it has been shut down over a dozen times in the past 6 years and it is still up.

Website: http://forum.ragezone.com/

Ciao.

You're a complete muppet. Go away, we're bored of listening to you jabbering on.

Not a mathematician either.

Lol :)

Good luck dude. My email address is in my profile. If possible can you keep me informed on how this gets along?

I think completing this project is going to take more than two months but then again it might not. It depends how talented and dedicated the team you've assembled is.

Pure fantasy.

If Mugen can do it, I don't see why someone else can't -- as long as they are modules that can be included later.

> I've been on Kaillera and MAME since 1997,

Heheh, MAME had only just been invented in 1997, and Kaerilla is only a couple of years old, besides Kaerilla is just a dll library incorporating network capable functions into a program, it is not a server. :)

I don't need to point out how stupid you are, you seem quite capable or making a prat of yourself on your own. If you earned that much money then you can afford to go back to school.
You're just winding us up though aren't you?
Noone can be THIS stupid :)

MWAHAHAHAH

That gave me a good laugh... Thanks!

You're a complete muppet. Go away, we're bored of listening to you jabbering on.

Gfk, I'm not going to ask you again. If you can't be nice to people on this forum please go somewhere else.
